share. learn. thrive!

You may have heard the buzz. I know I have! Today, I’m very excited to introduce Vega Sport Performance Protein.

Vega Sport Performance Protein is the newest addition to the Vega Sport line. With Vega Sport Optimizer giving you energy for your workout, Performance Protein was designed to help athletes to strengthen, tone, repair and regenerate your body for improved health and performance.

Why Performance Protein?

· 85% raw for optimal digestibility – first five ingredients including sprouted brown rice, green pea, hemp, alfalfa, and spirulina are all processed under 119 F. No other product even remotely close to being as raw!

· 75% organic – only protein drink with this level of organic ingredients

· Complete, balanced protein – broad spectrum and balanced amino acid profile

· 5,000mg of BCAAs – BCAAs are essential as they are metabolized in muscle rather than liver for fastest utilization

· Great value – $2.33 per serving

What goes into Performance Protein?

· Organic, sprouted whole grain brown rice protein – Raw and sprouted for exceptional digestibility, our unique brown rice protein includes the bran, germ and endosperm of the whole rice grain. Organically grown and produced via a proprietary, low temperature enzymatic biofermentation process, our rice protein is made without any chemicals, acids or solvents.

· Organic green pea protein – Pea is one of the best plant-based sources of protein for human consumption due to its rich amino acid profile and bioavailability. Particularly high in pea protein is lysine, an essential amino acid that helps convert fatty acids into energy, reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol, enhances calcium absorption and promotes collagen formation. Our green pea protein is chlorophyll rich, alkaline-forming, highly-digestible and organically-grown and processed.

· Hemp protein – Raw, alkaline-forming and complete, hemp protein contains all the amino acids, including all eight essential amino acids. Because it is comprised of primarily edestin and albumin, two of the most common types of proteins found in the human body, hemp protein is very easy to digest and assimilate. Clean and green, hemp protein is also a quality source of arginine, histidine, branch-chained amino acids and omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids.

· Organic alfalfa juice protein – Our alfalfa juice protein comes from young alfalfa plants, harvested at their peak and gently processed to maintain optimal nutritional properties. A raw, alkaline-forming and easily digestible source of complete protein, alfalfa juice protein is rich in chlorophyll and xanthophyll and provides all the essential and non essential amino acids plus 21 vitamins and minerals including beta carotene, vitamin E, B vitamins, calcium, magnesium and zinc.

· Spirulina – Exceptionally nutrient-dense, spirulina is a freshwater blue green algae that contains over 60% protein, among the highest of any food. Grown without pesticides or herbicides, spirulina yields 20 times more protein per acre than soybeans and 200 times more than beef. Raw, alkaline-forming and sporting a rich array of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, spirulina protects from oxidant stress, supports the immune system and reduces inflammation.

· Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) – Among the most vital for enhanced athletic performance are the essential branch chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine and valine as they cannot be made by the body and must be acquired through food. BCAAs are also metabolized in muscle tissue, rather than in the liver for faster utilization and they are proven to increase strength, endurance and muscle synthesis, enhance recovery, reduce muscle soreness and inflammation and improve energy and mood.

· Glutamine – Proven to support and enhance recovery after training, glutamine is the most abundant amino acid found in the body. Because your body will digest its own muscle to get glutamine, supplementing with this amino acid during times of heavy training or dieting is key to preventing muscle catabolism. Used in conjunction with proper training, glutamine can produce exceptional results in strength, muscle growth, and accelerated fat loss.

· Digestive Enzymes – Our unique digestive enzyme blend was specially formulated to enhance the digestibility, absorption and overall nutrition. We included plant- and bacterial-based proteolytic enzymes, aminopeptidase and hemicellulase to help eliminate any side effects like gas, bloating and discomfort. It also helps reduce inflammation, speed up recovery after exercise, and maintain strength during workouts.

Vega Sport Performance Protein is available in berry and vanilla flavors in convenient single-serving pouches, 24 single-serving boxes and economical 30-serving tubs. Vega Sport Perforamnce Protein is starting to pop up at retailers now, with more added regularly and is also available at the Sequel eStore.

Does anyone know if there are stores in Toronto that carry this?

Thanks kyle!
I am a competitive runner and during the season I do some pretty vigorous, touph workouts. I generall don't want to eat anything to close to, or during a workout, as I find that I don't feel good if I do and it seems like I havn't digested the food yet. The Vega Sport Performance Optimizer is definatelly an exception although I find that I even do better with that if I take it between a half an hour and an hour before the workout or a race. I am concerned about taking Sport Protein so close to my workout because I know I wouldn't want to eat any high protein food right before or during a race as it would slow me down. I understand that it might be beneficial for someone who is doing low intensity workouts for longer periods of time, but I just don't think it would be very beneficial to my kind of track workouts and such.

However, I do lift weights 2 to 3 days a week. Now, my intention is not to bulk up, but to strengthen and tone. I want to be as strong as I can with the least amount of muscle mass. I think that the Vega Sport Protein may be a good thing to take for my weight lifting, if it will give me some extra energy for the workout, but I just don't want it to build my muscles up too much.

You didn't really mention anything about the smoothie Infusion. What if I take that as well? I know that already has some protein in it.

Jedidiah,

Due to the amino acids that have been added, this is a product you would use focused around your workouts (pre-workout , peri-workout, and post workout). It is probably best to consume this with some simple carbohydrates (depending on your level of intensity). You can mix your sports performance optimizer with this for pre/peri-workout energy boost if necessary.

As for whether it is beneficial to you or not; if you lift weights regularly then its a definite yes.

The WFHO take as a meal replacement (due to complex carbohydrate added). I use this when you don't have time to make a real meal. Same goes for the vibrancy bars. The energy bar is of course another pre-workout item you can take (since it is composed of mostly simple carbohydrate). If you can afford it your workout nutrition might look like this;

Pre-Workout:
-1/2 - 1 Serving of Vega Sport Performance Protein
-1 Serving of Vega Sport Performance Optimizer
-1 Vega Energy Bar

Peri-Workout:
-1 Serving of Vega Sport Performance Optimizer
-1/4 - 1/2 Serving of Vega Sport Performance Protein

Post-Workout:
-1 Serving of Vega Sport Performance Protein
-3-4 Soaked Dates (or other simple carb)

If you are not trying to put on muscle mass, and you find your energy levels to be stable during and after your workouts, you can scrap the peri-workout drink as suggested above.

The Elliots Natural Food store in Sacramento CA started carrying this product. I just saw it today. Interensting, they started carrying this but they don't carry Vega Sport performance optimizer.

I bought a pack and I am little confused on when is ok to take it. I mean, I know it's ok to take it after a workout, but is it also ok to take before and during a workout? The pack doesn't really say exactly when the best time to take it is. That's what I love about the Sport optimizer. It tells you exactly when to take it.

Also, if I am already using the WFHO, the Sport performance optimizer, the smoothie infusion, the energy bar and the vibrancy bar, is this new product really necessary and beneficial to me?

Hi Kyle,

Thanks for your astute questions/comments. Whereas most Vega products are primarily made with whole foods, Vega Sport is geared specifically towards athletes who have greater nutritional requirements than the average person. Vega Sport contains naturally occurring BCAAs (3g per serving) and glutamine (2.5g per serving) but we included additional BCAAs and glutamine to match the dosages used in human clinical trials. In Canada (where our products are made and regulated), the claims we make must be justified by human clinical trials published in peer reviewed medical journals.

I can see how you may be concerned about too much hemp in your diet but rest assured there are no known allergies or sensitivities to hemp as it is no where near as ubiquitous as dairy, soy, wheat, corn etc. We agree, too much fiber can slow down absorption; there is only about 2g of hemp in each serving of Sport Protein so it should not be a concern.

Thanks for your support and for sharing your thoughts on our community.

I have two concerns regarding this product:

1. Why are BCAA's and Glutamine included in the formula? Is this not contradictory to Brendan's 'whole foods' philosophy that isolated nutrients should be avoided? (Due to; A) the acidic nature of isolates, and B) the fact that they 'steal' vitamins/minerals from the rest of your body to be digested and assimilated.)

2. I think Vega's current market is a relatively small group of people who consume your other products quite regularly already (WFHO, Vega Bars etc). These products already contain hemp protein. The last thing I want to do is develop a hemp sensitivity (by consuming too many of your great products). Not to mention the high fiber content of Hemp, which will slow digestion of this product post-workout and reduce its effectiveness. I think while Hemp is great, it should be left out of this formula for the reasons mentioned above.

That said, I am probably still going to try out and use this product. I already consume BCAA's, and Glutamine, and an array of hemp based Vega products. I just wanted to point out what I feel are contradictions to the Vega philosophy, and potential caveats of using this particular product in conjunction with the rest of the line.

Kyle.

Thanks Kelly!
So, I guess that would mean that I should use SPP instead of WFHO for post recovery?
Ideally, what is the proper way to use these 3 products for non workout and workout days? Is this it?
Non Workout day -- 1 serving of WFHO
Workout day -- 1 serving of SPO before workout, 1 serving of SPP after workout

RK & Joshua - WFHO is really more of an all-in-one meal replacement. This one is intend for those who are looking for a clean protein or to aid in recovery for those who workout. For athletes, the answer is likely that they will use both. Vega Sport Optimizer is just intended for pre-workout.
