5km run in 19min 52seconds and the mental aspect of it...

w00t I am super stoked on my new PR!
My goal for Feb. was to run 5km in 20minutes. Today I set out to run 3km in 12min but halfway through the 3rd lap I told myself to just go all the way! I took vega sport before hand and I really think it had something to do with my increased level of determination and stamina...

During the run I "invented" a new technique that I believe will help other runners achieve their goals as well! What you do is: set out to run a certain distance within a certain time limit. As you are running @ a difficult-to-maintain pace, look about 8-12 feet in front of you @ something on the ground and run hard to that spot! Constantly repeat this every time you reach that spot on the ground until the run is over and I am sure you will have great success. It goes along with what all the great long distance runner say about "taking it one step at a time." During the run I thought of it as doing many repetitions and each lap around the lake was a set-so I did 5 sets of A LOT of reps haha. I actually use this technique of spotting something on ground a few ft. in front of you is what I use when mowing the lawn so that I get a perfect straight line every time ;)

Give it a whirl and let me know if it works for you!

ps. on the final lap i felt like puking kind of and @ the end of the run my chest hurt a little bit-but I think it's cuz last night I drank a lot of wine...

pss. reaching my goal of 5km in sub 20 was a HUGE motivational booster for me. I did a 1km victory lap-nice and slow-just to soak it up and feel the huge rush of endorphins flow through my body :)

next goal: 10km in sub 40min!!

Hey Ted,
Nice Pr! Congrats! I am a runner myself and the vega sport has definately helped me with workouts and races. Last year I had a goal of going sub 17 in the 5k and nailed in on thankgiving morning at run to feed the hungry with a time of 16:34. I think a large part of the trick to getting your time down and reaching your goal is putting in lots of mileage. For the first time ever, I was able to put in several months of consistent training and slowing increasing my mileage. Towards the end of last year I was up to 60 to 65 miles a week and that really helped. This year, I want to get up to 70 to 75 a week and stay there for a while. I hope to be there by march. I run on a team with guys alot faster than me and they say that a huge key part of getting fast is just running alot. One guy told me that 70 is a magic # for alot of people and they start reaching their potencial when their mileage is in the 70's. Of coarse adding workouts and hills into the equation makes your performance even better.

So just as a sugestion, work on getting your mileage up and throw in some hills and you'll be surprised at how much faster you get and how much quicker you reach your goals.
