share. learn. thrive!

Today I went to the gym. I've been...here or there...every few weeks....and I've been half-assing it. WOrking out for 20 minutes, barely putting any effort in. Just being all around lazy. Well today marks the first day I change this tired routine. Went to a class! Exercise is different for everyone, but at least for me, I HAVE to go to classes. It's the only way I'll exercise for a reasonable amount of time, and put a reasonable amount of effort into it. And you know what? Today was actually fun! I went to a class at Goodlife called 'Body Attack', and the instructor was OVER THE TOP energetic. He was loving it. We were doing all these silly moves, but I sweat my ass off and had a good laugh at myself doing all this stupid s***. It's a good thing I was laughing at myself ebcasue otherwise I'd be crying. Man, have I ever gained weight. I've known this for a long time, but it's unavoidably obvious when standing in ugly exercise clothes in front of a full length mirror. I genuinely DO look 3 months pregnant. How embarassing. If I could pause everything and lose a few pounds before work tomorrow, or seeing friends on th eweekend, that would be fabulous. UNFORTUNATELY, even with this depressing realization, I still have to face my peers tomorrow morning, and even my boyfriend tonight. The only thing I can do is put some serious effort into losing weight. TO recap goals of previous posts, it's important that I...

1. Eat according to my diet plan (more on that later)

2. Quit smoking (starting again tomorrow morning...)

3. Get regular exercise (yay, did that today)

4. MINIMAL PARTYING (drinking/drugs)

5. 8 hours of sleep dammit!

I'm trying to eat 1400 - 1500 cal a day. So far that's looking like:

-yogurt/cottage cheese 250 cal

-apple 80 cal

-almonds 200 cal

-vega shake 150 cal

-salad (or lunch alt.) 300 cal

-afternoon snack 200 cal

-SOUP DINNER 300 cal

That's a total of approx 1480 cal. Man it's SO easy to sneak more calories in. A bite of a muffin, some chips, crackers, bite of somebody's fries. UGH. I love eating so much.

Well, fingers crossed for tomorrow. It's going to be one of those busy busy days where I can't get anything done. What I CAN do is eat well, even if the gym isn't an option.

Thursday after work, will do some cardio and a bit of weights. Recently discovered that my gym is open until midnight! Crazy!

In keeping with my final goal, I'm off to bed. Night

Leigh, I also share your passion for food :) Erin, Brad, & Jill are right, though; it is important to take it slowly. You're more likely to stay committed if you do it this way. I know all too well the feelings of sudden motivation, doing anything & everything I can to stay in shape. And then because I'd push myself to hard, I'd drop it all again.
Balance is extremely important. Don't think of it as all or nothing. If you have a cookie, don't "give up" & eat the whole box. Just savour that cookie :)
Find exercise that you truly ENJOY. So important, because otherwise you'll stop doing it. My favourite is yoga. I also have a ton of workout DVDs, because I often need direction as well.
Finally, make sure you are enjoying your meals. If you need some ideas, I have a TON of recipes on my blog: http://charskitchen.blogspot.com/
Because the recipes I make are so healthy, there's no need to feel guilty eating as much as you feel you need :)
I hope this helps, hunn. You can do it!

Leigh,

Very impressive that you've become re-motivated. As Brad & Erin have mentioned, I would also encourage you to avoid implementing too many changes at once. Focus on one improvement at a time - it takes time for your body to adapt.

All the best!

I agree completely with Erin. It's too hard to change everything in one day for most people. I have done it in the past and it works, but admittedly I am a bit of a minority.

Once you kick the salt and fat in most fast food and North American diet, you'll stop wanting to nibble on snacks. Instead of eating chips or crackers just reach for a bag of baby carrots. Small changes, gradual changes. Good luck!
