My Top Ten Tips for Sustaining Yourself Nutritionally and Mentally During Competition

There are countless nutritional resources available for athletes and one of the best around in my opinion is Brendan Brazier. So when it comes to nutritional advice, I’d recommend sticking with the experts. With that said, I am only qualified to share my experiences and what I have learned throughout…

Smoothies & Sustainability

As an author, educator, and advocate of plant-based whole food nutrition, Brendan Brazier has introduced us to a whole new world of eating — not only connecting food back to nutrition, but also to the environmental impact of food production. Brendan advocates adopting a plant-based that can sustain you throughout your day as well as your workouts; but also one that is sustainable for…

2012 Eagleman AquaVelo USATMA Championship

The 2012 triathlon season got off to a bit of a rough start. Back in March, I had a cycling accident in Santa Barbara in which I fractured my left wrist (scaphoid) leaving me in a cast for several weeks and in a brace for several months following. Then in April, I developed a mysterious swollen ankle during a business trip that prevented me from running for over a month. When your wrist is in a cast and you can't put much weight on an ankle, it would make the prospect of competing in my…

One BIG event down, one to go

The conditions couldn't have been worse at this year's Test of Metal (mountain bike race) in Squamish this past weekend. The rain was absolutely torrential and with 873 racers forging their way through the unrelenting 67 km war zone, the mud was stirred up like wet concrete through most of the course.

That said, I can't remember a time where I was more physically prepared or had more fun. I crossed the finish line as giddy as a school kid. I was 'in the zone' the entire…

Vega One: A Nutritionists Perspective

As a long time user and advocate of Vega's Whole Food Health Optimizer, I was hesitant about this "new kid on the block". Is Vega One really an improvement?

As a Nutritionist (and compulsive label reader) my priority is to understand the nutritional benefits, but also the points of difference between one product and another. My comparison of the changes in formulation are based on objective criteria, and actual quantitative differences.…

Christmas Weekend Recipe Ideas!

This weekend I'm sure we are all thinking of the amazing food we can cook- but what about incorporating some of Brendan Brazier's Thrive Food recipes?

There has been a ton of feedback about 'Holiday Eating'- going to your family members for dinner and wondering if you can keep up with a clean-eating ideal around others who might not eat the same as you. Sometimes, we hear of stories of family members who don't understand the plant-based…

Getting in a quick Vega pre-workout snack

Got inspired the other day with Brendan's suggestion to use Vega Sport Endurance Gel as pre-workout alternative.

My quick glycogen loading morning snack before workout:

*organic whole rice & spelt cakes

*raspberry Vega Sport Endurance gel (just like a fruit spread)

*crushed raw walnuts

This and some jasmine green tea, and I am ready to hit the gym!…

In The Vega Kitchen: Steamed Brussels Sprouts and Kale with Vinaigrette

It's no secret, brussels sprouts have a bad rep. Speaking as someone who has never before brought this unsought-after vegetable into my home, I decided to take a chance on this recipe I found online. But if I'm really being honest, the vinaigrette sounded delicious and so I thought it was possible the dressing could give them a fighting chance. The result? Unexpected success and so I am recommending it to you all today. That is, if you haven't yet made up your mind about this little green…
