Thriving in Chicago, Pt. 3

As I mentioned in previous blogs, I'm doing the Thrive in 30 vegan diet challenge with a group of friends. They've all agreed to share info about their lifestyle, eating habits and experiences. This week's spotlight is on professional badass Heather Crosby.

Heather grew up on a horsefarm in Maryland, and post-college in 1998, she sold her truck and moved to Chicago with half a job and one month's rent to her name. Being brave has paid off and ChiTown has been good to her. It is her… Continue

Back Acne be GONE!

I've had back acne for about 6 years now and have tried "everything" to get rid of it. It's been flaring up recently and I'm starting to get really frustrated with it so I am now DETERMINED to get rid of it once and for all. Starting tomorrow I will begin a vegetable "fast" (maybe I'll sneak a couple bananas and apples in there too) in an attempt to remove all the red pimples/zits on my back. Once they are gone, I will slowly add certain foods into my diet and @ the first sight of a zit I will… Continue

Are there two of me?

I wrote recently ago about the witness. In that instance it referred to someone seeing an act that someone else performed. You are running down the road and a friend sees you. They witnessed the act of you running. So what? We are all familiar with this concept. Are you familiar with yourself as the witness to your own experience? Not your mind telling you, “I am running down the road” but your consciousness experiencing you running down the road. The later takes place in a space of No Mind.… Continue

1 month North

Wow, time sure flies by. I'm not sure if it's because I'm so busy or because the days are so short. Most likely both. And now with this time change, it will be dark by 4pm! Before I know it, I'll be back where the sun is!

I think I'm affected by lack of sunlight. I need ALL the lights on in the house to feel alive. When I'm riding indoors I hate when my surroundings are dark. A big screen to watch movies at my family's house helps!

Speaking of family, my mom and dad have… Continue

Inspirational Reads

In Defense of FOOD - by Michael Pollan!

Very well written and eye opener! He also wrote Omnivores Dilemma and helped produce FOOD INC (the movie).

Can't put it down once you start - I highly recommend it.

Inspirational Reads

I’ve always been one who is more likely to sit down with an informative read than a novel. My husband jokingly refers to these as my “textbooks” but I really enjoy learning something new in the few moments I have to read in the day. November’s Thrive Challenge is all about these textbooks. An inspiring read on health living, vegetarian diets or fitness. Make a pick, curl up on the sofa, and get inspired.… Continue

Thriving in Chicago, Pt. 2

Last week, I wrote about being vegan and why I decided to do the Thrive in 30 Challenge with a few friends. Now it's time to hear from them. First up is acupuncturist Lisa Reichert. I asked Lisa to participate because I knew she could provide a Traditional Chinese Medicine take on Brazier's The Thrive Diet.

Lisa Reichert, Jill-of-all-Trades, primarily rebalances the whole self with Oriental Medicine with a nutritional bent. Though her background in art therapy, depth psychology,… Continue

TURNING OVER A NEW LEAF AND EATING IT. My transition to a Plant Based Whole Food Nutrition plan. Part 2

Part 2

Cold Turkey, not the day after Thanksgiving cold turkey I used to slap between two pieces of whole grain bread but rather the game plan I used to switch to a plant based style of eating. Each day I would consume two servings each of eggs, chicken and whey protein powder along with a serving each of white fish and red meat. This was a typical day of protein consumption over the last few years as I worked my way up to becoming one of Canada’s top male fitness… Continue
