Snack Time at Sequel

To kickoff this month’s Thrive Challenge, I thought I would share a little insight into the world of Sequel. If you’ve been reading this blog for the past few months, you’ve probably read about our awesome meal program. Our staff kitchen is always stocked with fresh veggies, nuts and seeds for a nutritious lunch and fruit and Vega Health Optimizer at our smoothie bar for breakfast. (We know; we’re spoiled!) We also… Continue

Horseback Riding: Core Strength To The Max!!

Yes believe it or not, horseback riding is more then just sitting on a horse (as many believe)!

Riding is mainly based on your position, form and rhythm with the horse. It is a connection between the muscles you use to a response from the horse. As you progress in your riding ability ( this can take anywhere from 2-4 years to gain) you begin to learn to use only your body weight in the saddle, as well mainly control through your legs! Rarely is control used through the reigns! To… Continue

Raw Food Athletes - masters thesis project

I have been a raw food athlete for a little over 6 months. My body has been going through a whirlwind of symptoms and changes - some uncomfortable but most wonderful. After the initial detox symptoms my body started feeling lighter, cleaner, and amazingly stronger.

I am so fascinated by the raw food lifestyle that I decided to write my masters thesis on the viability of a raw food diet for athletes. Part of my thesis will be to track my performance measures pre-raw food and 9 months… Continue

Turning Fear Into Focus: Freeing Your Possibility

Imagine yourself on a gurney in an ambulance, sirens scream, tires screech, you are surrounded by chaos. Your back is broken, your life has been flipped upside down. And then, from within the chaos, everything becomes silent and you are given a choice…live or die. You choose to live and force your eyes to stay open, stay awake, and stay present.

Three years have passed and you’re now a paraplegic perched at the top of an icy World Cup downhill ski course. You’re preparing… Continue

Hemp Energy Balls

When Brendan visited the Comox Valley last spring, I presented him with a container of my favourite "treat". I don't know if he ever tasted them or not - he was very focused on giving his presentation, which was excellent. However, whenever I've served these to my Comox Valley Road Runners friends they have been a hit - and have disappeared quickly.

They are very easy - though somewhat messy - to make. The Recipe:

1 cup of organic nut or seed butter (I've used everything… Continue

Yoga is like Yogurt?

A yoga teacher once said that Yoga is like yogurt. To make yogurt you take warm milk then you add a bit of yogurt to the milk, after a while the culture expands and the milk and yogurt become One. Yoga means union, union of the mind, body and spirit. Yoga and meditation help us expand who we are into the world and thrive.

Our practice on the mat serves us well off the mat. What we practice we become.

Yoga teaches us that we work from the inside out. What we feel inside reflects… Continue

Mansfield 8 hour race

This post was taken from my blog, theveganvagabond, posted back in May. It was an 8 hour mountain bike race. The race premise is pretty simple; ride a 10km course through a mix of singletrack and doubletrack trail for 8 hours and whoever has the most laps wins.

Everyone got a little dirty. I was… Continue

Preparing for the World Championships Marathon in Germany

Guten Tag aus Deutschland (Good Day from Germany)!

I have been in Germany for the past 12 days putting the final touches on my preparations for the 2009 IAAF World Track & Field Championships Marathon. The world championships is the biggest and most competitive global track & field event outside of the Olympic Games. The competition for the men's marathon event is very strong. The event also doubles as the World Cup Marathon Team Championships. The times for each countries… Continue

11 days and counting

Describe the feeling . . .

It's a feeling I remember, but from something different. It feels like flipping pages. It feels like Cardio Respiratory Phys 4231. Ahh . . . the Undergrad experience.

For the first 2 years, it was nine times out of ten, simple crisis to crisis management. Gradually the reading piles up, words left un-underlined, highlighters still in the box, Gryphon day planner virtually unused.

The saving grace was of course Gryphon Nordic Racing. A… Continue

To Clean Your Lymphatic System, Just Bounce

The human immune system is a very intelligent design for identifying & eradicating toxins, foreign bodies and disease cells like cancer. A major part of the immune system is the lymphatic system. The human lymphatic system is like blood vessels and arteries, it's all throughout your body, but it has no pump like the heart. It works by moving toxins along it's length through body movements – up and down motions are best.

As people walk they may have a little bounce in their step.… Continue

In the Sequel Garden

Since spring, Sequel Naturals staff have competed in our annual Gardening Showdown. If you remember from earlier in the season, each team of 4-6 employees was given a 4’ by 8’ planter. Every month, teams compete in a monthly challenge from best garden design to iron chef-style meal prep. But it seems we’ve run into a challenge along the way. Someone in our neighborhood has discovered a spot to… Continue

Do you know what you are eating?

I just saw the documentary Food Inc. It will definitely change the way I view food and the industry. I didn't know that the American food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations and that Monsanto has patented a gene in 90% of America’s soybean seeds, forcing farmers to buy need seed from the company every season.

I highly recommend the movie. You will be happy to be vegan or vegetarian.

Ironman Lake Placid

After being a way from Ironman racing for nearly 2 years due to injury, I finally returned to the sport I love at Ironman Lake Placid on July 26. This would be my 17th Ironman and 8th time racing in Lake Placid. It's always a special race since it's so close to my home. I always have tons of friends and family cheering me on the entire day and am often lucky to have friends and teammates race too.

The swim in Lake Placid takes place in the calm and peaceful waters of Mirror Lake.… Continue
