Training time again?!

This is me and Joe during our first half marathon together last year. 3kms into the race, my IT band tightened and I knew I was done. Determined to finish, we managed to have a good time on the way and the photographers loved us. Technically, I didn't finish, cuz as you can see my foot never actually crossed the finish line!!

We've done 2 half marathons this year, and after the last one in… Continue

On Beyond 70 - on the track

Saturday, July 18, 2009. Day two of the Canadian Masters National Track Championships. I'd worked towards this day for months - the day I was scheduled to race 400meters - 2:45pm start time. It was only 9am as we left our room in Sun Peaks and headed for the track in Kamloops, BC, but already my stomach was "clutching", my heart beating faster. We arrived at the track in time to see the 100 meter runners struggle into a blustery wind. "Oh no", I thought. "Not another 400 into a head wind up the… Continue

Glowing Skin From The Inside Out

Take a look at your skin, what is it telling you about your health and internal balance? The skin is the largest organ in the body that reflects all that is going on inside. Wrinkles, dry or oily skin, acne, and inflammation are all signs of poor internal health, often brought on by consuming unhealthful foods and avoiding skin-healthy nutrients. Most people turn to all sorts of cosmetics, lotions, chemicals and pills to treat skin problems. This tactic does little to address the root cause of… Continue

The Importance Of Exercise As We Age

People are always looking for a magic pill or potion for good health and longevity. Well, I don’t have a pill or potion to sell you, but I do have some free advice. Include exercise three times per week into your normal weekly schedule and you will feel better than you have in years.

Exercise is not for just the young. In fact, exercising is actually more important for the baby boomer population. Between the ages of 30-50, we will lose approximately 5-10 percent of our lean body mass… Continue

My 30th Birthday Gift

I was a bit of a late-bloomer when it comes to fitness. As a kid, academics were encouraged over sports. As a teen and into my early 20s, I exercised occasionally but never made a regular commitment. When I finished college, I had more time to devote to fitness so I decided to join a running clinic and started to prepare for my first race. Our one minute run intervals seemed to take an eternity but over the weeks running got easier. I did a 5km race followed by a couple 10km races. I was… Continue

The night before the beginning of the new me!

I am 43, been diagnosed with essential hypertension, depression and anxiety disorder. I'm a personal trainer that has a "Do as I say, not as I do" philosophy. I grew up wearing a Milwaukee back brace after having 1/2 of my spine fused for scoliosis. Thus, I never got into sports growing up. However, I know there is a different me inside waiting to come out.

I have a very playful and adventurous side that I have done nothing with in so very long. I've been taking the easy way out just… Continue

Games of Texas Fight

The fight started out, we met in the center of the ring. I jabbed a couple times, landing one of them and we circled some. We had some exchanges, both of us landing solid shots. The first round ended and I went to the corner. My trainer told me that he was countering my jab so I needed to throw it more and more and not give up on it. So the second round started and we met in the middle again, both wanting to win and have the dominant position in the ring. We traded shots and I landed a solid… Continue

I Start My Day With Vega

Many of you have written me about how do I start my day as a 46 year old vegan athlete? What do I eat as a vegan athlete? Why am I vegan? One of the big reasons I was able to accomplish my 20/20/20<5@45 event last year was due to my vegan nutritional intake. I have been a vegan now for almost half my life. I began my vegan ways when I was living in India coaching the Junior Davis Cup Tennis Team from 1986-91. Back in the late eighties in Madras, milk was brought to your house in a plastic… Continue

Skeptical at first, Not now.

After being introduced to Vega sport drink a little over a month ago I thought this was just another sport drink, maybe even a gimick. After taking the drink and training hard during my hockey practices and games I noticed something different, my recovery time was getting shorter and I found I had more energy on the ice. I have been playing a long time and I know what my body can and can't do and I have to say this product has definitely given me a boost for my workouts. Another way I have… Continue

Getting ready for the Games of Texas Boxing Tournament

The last two weeks have been intense at the gym I have had to drop from 153lbs. to 141lbs. currently I am at 144lbs. Workouts have extended from 2 to 3 hours workouts, to 3 and 4 hour workouts. I start my workout by warming up with 20 minutes of jump rope, then I move on to shadowboxing. Shadowboxing, is very crucial to boxing because this is the time you perfect the art, the technique and master all the combos while you look into mirrors so you know the form is correct. I will do 6 rounds of… Continue

Shopping for vegan athletic equipment

So, are your shoes leather? Though this question doesn’t pop up as often as “Where do you get your protein?”, it does cross the mind of many curious non-veg friends, family and fellow athletes. Though initially I turned to a plant-based diet in search of optimal health, eventually I came to understand and fully support all of the other great reasons to refrain from using animal products of any form, not just dietary. For those of us who are vegan for ethical or environmental reasons, it is… Continue

The Power of Your Lifestyle: Stop Running out of Energy and Live for "Breakthrough Energy".

Most people are familiar with the expression "hitting the wall"; it’s an athletic term. However, if you’re not into sports, you may need a clearer definition.

Many of you have stated this another way… "falling off the wagon" perhaps?

Hitting the wall (also known as falling off the wagon, bonking, or the bonk) originally referred to runners who were describing what happened to them between the eighteenth and twenty-fifty mile of a marathon. At about mile 20, the runners’… Continue

Training Through Injury

A few weeks ago I broke my nose during training. It's not even a glorious story. I was rolling Jiu Jitsu with my instructor; he was mounted on my back and began to bring his arm across and under my chin to lock in a choke. Instead he brought his arm across my nose – a torture tactic he uses to make sure the arm goes across the throat and not over the chin – but quickly locked his arms to create leverage and cranked. CRACK! Next thing I know: a bloody crooked nose.

In my… Continue

Tips for keeping energy high

"I don't know how you do it, Rob."

That's something I get a lot of. When you exercise 20-30 hours a week, and still have the energy to lead a normal life, people are usually surprised. But such is the life of a full time fitness instructor who, on any given day, might teach 4 high-impact athletic conditioning classes and then head to his favourite gym to throw around 300-pound tires, climb ropes and pull weighted sleds around (and in mid-summer, then hit the tennis court for an… Continue
