After hiking the Appalachian Trail in the USA 10 years ago I allowed myself to eat & drink what I wanted without incorporating exercise into my daily life. That resulted in my 5'1" frame ballooning to 157 lbs...yikes! In 2003 I was sick of waking up everyday depressed that I was overweight. I decided it was time to make that change. In August I announced to everyone that I was going to lose 20 lbs. by American Thanksgiving! I figured if I said it out loud that I was going to do this &… Continue

So here I am, age 25, looking to make a change in my life to thrive instead of just existing. Brendan's books and website have inspired me so much, my plan is to follow is twelve week plan in Thrive Nutrition. I went out today and bought all of the supplies for day one. It's amazing how much of the staples like tahini that I don't have in my fridge.…

Last night, my publicist threw the Boston launch party for my new book, Paradise Road: Jack Kerouac's Lost Highway and My Search for America (John Wiley & Sons). It was held at a popular barbecue restaurant in the city, and knowing that I would have trouble finding anything on the menu to eat, I brought along packets of the Whole Food Optimizer, lemon lime sports drink, and a couple of vibrancy bars.
I ended up 'evangelizing' the crowd that came to hear about the… Continue

It feels pretty good to finish off the year with a gold at the Canadian Championships in Calgary. Its great to start and finish my season with gold medals.
The last few weeks have taken a lot of strength. Every day has been a challenge to click into my skis and find the energy I need to ski how I want. I am proud that I stepped up to the plate these last 2 contest Continue

me to know that I can always find that…

Hello. Recently went in for counseling and was told what others suspected- I have A.D.D. inattention. I'm 37 year old male.
I'm hoping to hear from others who have friends who are handling this condition, and how they're managing it. Some folks want this to be a private concern, though I don't know how you can guard that on this site.
"Do no harm" places me in veganism. However, doing myself no harm means veganism comes second to ADD. Gelatin caps and fish oil ARE on the… Continue

I don't drink anything with caffeine in it, and found that a pouch of Sport lemon lime in a cup of water left me feeling too 'buzzzzy' during workouts. (In winter, preparing to play in rugby tournaments, I'll typically do three gym workouts a week and three outdoor workouts: snowshoeing, cross country skiing, pond hockey, etc.)
For a ninety minute indoor workout, often consisting of a swim… Continue

The book is very complicated...the question I asked after reading it was 'do I need to hire a personal assistant to help with the foods. I made a few recipes (excellent), however is it realistic in this fast past world of work, family, etc. If I were a professional athlete it would be ideal. I am not lazy at all. I am a vegan (strict) and not into processed foods or engineered foods, but come on Branden your book is impossible. Not being a wise guy just truthful.

How do you choose the right personal trainer?
The time has come for you to get fit and shed that unwelcome body fat. Or perhaps you want to add some size to your frame, or train for an
athletic event, such as a half marathon. At this point, I always
recommend seeking out the help of a professional personal trainer or
strength and conditioning coach to get you started off on the right
However, I implore you;… Continue

OK so I have to come clean about my love for dairy. Trust me - I am not proud of it. It started when I was very young - along with most everyone I am sure. And it has never gone away.
Actually, at this point its just yogurt, kefir and cottage cheese. Sigh.
Really, it's not the taste or fat content b/c I only like plain - yep plain, low-fat dairy - I think it's the texture. I love the thick, creamy consistency of a bowl… Continue

I can't believe that the 2010 World Cup season has come to an end. It has been a great season with highs, lows and flashes of brilliance.
I have never felt so completely exhausted in my body, mind and soul. I
really put everything into this season and I can walk away saying that
i wouldn't have changed anything. I feel so confident that I prepared
myself the best that i could have for the Games, and that i really took
in the whole experience.
The final three… Continue

I've changed my workouts to doing only High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) using primarily body weight and minimal gym equipment including my TRX, kettle bell weights, skipping rope and chin up bar. I love this kind of work out because it ramps up my metabolism, builds strength and endurance aaaaanddd....only takes about 20 minutes or so out of my day! I also love the way it challenges me, its fun and I can do the workouts… Continue

Wow Love Love this stuff! I tend to have it after a workout(jog, yoga, cardio and weights, etc). I personally have found a difference in the relaxation in my muscles after 10 minutes after drinking it...yes 10 minutes!!!
This is what I add to my Vega Protein:
-Frozen mixed fruits
-Salba or Hulled Hemp Seed
-Sometimes a Chloressence tablet or two
-Either vanilla almond or rice milk
-Depending on my fruit intake for that day I'll throw in half of a banana

So Sorry it has taken me a while to get onto here to write about Miss Calgary that happened two weeks ago in between moving and figuring out my next goals! WELL the bad news is that I didn't win :(....But the good news is that it was a amazing experience! The best part out of this whole training experience is the new body that I have, the networking and friends that I have made along the way. I am very grateful to be a part of Team VEGA and the whole team has been so… Continue

This is a tale of a treat with an identity crisis.
Technically, it's a smoothie because it
A) is made in a blender
B) has fruit
C) includes a little nutrient-rich protein powder
D) is kinda an ugly green color (a non-essential but frequent result of smoothie making).
Yet there's something about this blend, with its thick frosty creamy mangos and sweetly inviting flavor that makes it… Continue

When I mono-meal, I tend to eat A LOT of one fruit, like for instance I just finished eating 7 grapefruit within 45 minutes...
For lunch I ate 4.5 lbs or 2 kilograms of grapes within an hour...
For breakfast I had 8 oranges....
(throughout the day i drink my homemade green juice consisting of like 8 different vegetables)
scary is that even though the oranges were organic, they were
seedless, the grapes on the were not organic but were also
seedless! the… Continue

Ok well to tell you the truth I just made that name up right now, haha. This smoothie was previously unnamed but needed a little zing to it to make it blog worthy!
Like most of us Vega athletes I train extremely hard and post workout nutrition is a huge part of the game. After a lot of trial and error and help from Vega, as well as Brendan and his Thrive Diet opus I believe I have finally mastered the art of the post workout smoothie! It may seem like a lot of ingredients and… Continue

I lost my 50 extra pounds with diet and weight training , hardly ever did any cardio ,especially running. I am on the Thrive Diet since I started running about two months ago and I can't tell how amazed I am with the results . The first week I was pretty worn out but my body adopted quickly . I… Continue
