Some of you may have already followed through the "Thrive-in-30" program to learn more about natural plant based nutrition and see the differences it can make in how you feel and function.  I'd like…Continue

Winter Running - Minimalist Shoe Set-Up

While running on a treadmill over the winter months can maintain and build your running performance, there is a certain argument to be made for heading out the door and exploring the realm of winter running.  Snow, ice, and layers of clothes transform simple running into an exercise that sharpens balance…

Running as a Way of Life

Originally posted this article as a "guest Blogger" on Katrina Bos' Blog documenting her transformation from a non-runner to a runner with the goal of doing a Marathon in 2012.  I've been working with Katrina helping her develop a "Natural" running form, focusing on some barefoot running, but mostly using minimalist shoes and a "forefoot/midfoot" running form.…

Real Simple Food-ism

It's a challenge growing up in North-America and deciding what to eat.  We are one of the few cultures around the world that do not have a definable "food culture" or "norm".  Instead since the introduction of "nutrition" and "nutritionism" in the mid 20th century we have become a neurotic culture fragmented into an every increasing array of "food-isms" way too cerebrally driven and obsessed with understanding and choosing our food with our brains instead of our biology.

We…

BORN TO RUN - HERE'S THE PROOF

Now, imagine if you will the sensations of freedom, joy, meditative awareness, pure-self expression and effortless-effort all combined together. I offer to you that this experience is available through running and that, except for a small group of exceptions, we were all BORN TO RUN.

In January 2010 I was decidedly a non-runner, or as my friend K so eloquently puts it "I use to run like a rock". With the goal of completing an Ironman Triathlon I reluctantly took up running.…

WHY EAT NATURAL WHOLE PLANT BASED FOODS

The reasons are many but in its simplest form it comes down to the fact that physiologically we are mammals and as such our "organism" does best with whole, fresh, unprocessed plant based foods. While some argue that animal based products also suit our physiology I would contend that from a purely physiologic sense animal products should only ever count for a small percentage of a diet. However when you further consider the degree of processing undergone by most animal products, the environmental impacts, the varying ethical issues, and the fact that even "natural" organic local animal products cause disproportionately higher amounts of inflammation to our systems and require a greater degree of digestions to absorb nutrients compared to plant based whole food nutrition - its plants that trump all for optimal health and wellbeing.

Debates aside, its easy enough to decide for one's own self: undertake a 30 day challenge both see and feel the difference - higher energy levles, less aches and pains, clearer mental acuity, improved immune functioning, and if you took it a step furtehr and checked all yoru bio-chemistry you would see marked impriovements in all organ systems.

The key is approaching a diet of natural whole unprocessed plant based foods with a strategy that is individualized to meet your particular health & lifestyle needs. how to devise such a strategy? Easiest is to start talking to the many others that have done so and learn from them, speak to your health care provider(s), keep a journal to reflect on your own experience and continue to learn and evolve. It is not a "static" solution, rather a dynamic interplay of factors that will continually change and evolve through your life, and the more you are attuned to the dynamics of it the more nutrition will become "intuitive" and "second nature" and not some contorted academic brain exercise.

Just remember that every tissue, every cell, every molecule, every chemical process in your body is comprised of and directed by the molecules you put in your mouth in the form of food and nutrition. High quality coming in means high quality functioning. We are the only "mammals" for whom this is not a pure and simple intuitive truth - unfortunately advertising and social paradigms have done much to create disordered ways of eating. So just step away from all the food "emotions" and "internal reasoning" and start giving your body what it wants and needs. You'll be amazed.

Wishing you well on your journey.

Keep Rising.

Thanks Aleksandar, your comment came at a good time, as I was feeling the pain of giving up so much all at once. You are reminding me of taking baby steps in the beginning which is something I tend to ignore and jump in as you say with enthusiasm and eagerness, but of course, it does not work well for me. Thanks for the nudge back to reality, your method is working better already.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I certainly appreciate your generous offer to help me with any questions I might have, as I can see from your blog posts that you seriously think out your comments before responding. I especially enjoyed your comments regarding forefoot running, which I had been told was much easier on your body/knees. I had tried it in the past and found my calves and feet were so sore that I was almost incapacitated for a week. This time I tried it for 10 min's in total as you suggest for a start, alternating with walking and did find I could run quicker with less effort, and calf pain is not so much stressed with small amounts at a time. Look forward to reading more of your insightful responses/comments/discussions. Dave

Thank you Aleksandar. I can't wait to demo the Whole Food Optimizer at our Diet workshop this Sept 29th. I will be placing an article of the product on my TPD event blog as well. I have always believed in this product and am thrilled to have it be part of my weight loss diet strategy. I will be letting Vega Community know how the demo went. Adding a community interactive blog was genuis, we need more of these support networks. I look forward to reading your posts Aleksandar. Thanks again.
