Question about cramping for cyclists

One of my fitness trainer colleagues - 45, male, in excellent shape - has cycled for years but in his race this past weekend experienced severe cramping several times to the point that he had to fall off his bike and couldn't actually bend his legs for several minutes. He hasn't experienced this before and said it was a normal day, he ate well, slept well. He takes coconut water and has used energy gels and other things (he rhymed off a couple acronyms but now I forget what they are). He asked…See More

Rob Moore replied to Denise Chapman's discussion If you're not a big salad eater...
"I've tried that, but gosh it tastes terrible! Do you still notice the taste? What else do you put in it? A raw foodist told me to blend bananas with the lettuce or spinach and I wouldn't notice but I really did."

"Can you ask Brendan about recovery. I follow the thrive diet to the tee. I'm a nutritionist so I already have a background in the science of it all. However, I'm still not recovering as quick as I need to for my muay thai kickboxing…"

Shake & Go Smoothie

It always amazes me when people mix their protein powder with water, as if that's supposed to be an appetizing thing. Like guys at the gym will drop 2 scoops of whey protein in their water container, mix it up, and guzzle it down with the same pained expression they used when squatting 300 pounds. Having protein powder with water is what I imagine the inside of a dirty aquarium tastes like. Gross. Which is why I always mix my powders in my smoothies, with bananas and berries and everything else…See More

Balance

One of my class participants was saying she was losing focus when it came to fitness goalsand wondered why she should keep striving for more. And it's notnecessarily about accomplishing more, though sometimes it is: how muchweight you can lift, how fast you can go, how flexible you want to be.But the focus, I think, should always be on balance. Feeling strong butrelaxed, engaged without tension, pushing while letting go. Most oftenwe focus on one or the other, and when we do, we can end up just…See More

Why men should take group fitness classes

(Aaron and Thom hold the advanced side plank on the ball in Abs class)Men and Group Exercise (edited from original published in Beyond Fitness, September 2008)In most group exercise classes, men are nowhere to be seen. While women gather in the studio, men prefer hunting in the weight room, isolated in their quest to conquer the heaviest monster they can lift. He may not know how many calories he’s burned, but ask any man and he can tell you how much he can bench press. But there is a secret…See More
