October Thrive Challenge

Inspired by the lifestyle changes recommended in Thrive and Thrive in 30, the Vega Community is here to keep you on track, share in your successes, and inspire even greater change to help you achieve optimal health.

“Too early, too cold, my legs hurt, I was up late;” sound familiar? During the winter months, it can be easy to find reasons for why not to exercise. So, what’s your plan for staying motivated this time of the year?

For some, it might be joining a running club or finding a training buddy to help you stay on track. For others, it could be keeping an exercise journal to compare how you feel before and after your workouts.

Winter doesn't phase me but a change in our entire household schedule does! Thanks to hubby's work schedule changing, I no longer have lazy mornings to go work out but the good news is my twins are now in school so I have a half-day to get a workout in.  The challenge is not letting social outings and household chores take priority over getting to the gym (which I usually prefer to do in the early mornings). To make sure I stay on track, I've created an entire new workout program for myself and am only scheduling one social activity per week.

My excuse is that I don't have time. My solution to this: SCHEDULE IT! I schedule time for work, cooking, cleaning, dates, and just about everything else in my life. Everything is broken down into an hourly schedule. If I can do that, I can change one of those hours from "work" to "workOUT."

My go-to excuse is that I'm too busy.  The reality is that I feel better and can focus on tasks better when I've worked out.  My plan this year (I've already begun) is to use a DVD set in my apartment.  This way, there is no need to go to a gym.  Getting into the habit has been good so far!

My excuse for not going to the gym is that I do not need a gym to do yoga, all I need is my mat. if you truly love yourself, you will automatically do what is good for your body. Trying To avoid anything that disrupts your peace. You can walk anywhere so you do not need gym for that either. If you live in the north you can get yourself up and go to a local superstore and walk in there if the weather outside is frightful! Your body is your temple and you are what you eat, remembering that movement is what keeps us young! Never stop moving!

I resonate with others... dark, cold, got to bed too late the night before as good excuses not to get out of bed.  The best way I have of dealing with this is to not even consider listening to the chatter in my brain and just get up and go.  Once I get up, the rest is automatic and I'm always glad I did.

Excuses? It's too cold, it's too dark, but my poor L5 won't like it.......Excuses BE GONE! I have a 7 month old Blue Heeler with loads of energy, and I have just signed my youngest daughter up at the gym with me. So a lot of days I will be double dipping! I am at the gym in the am for my workout, back after school with my daughter for hers! The WFHO Vanilla Chai gives me the right start in the morning, 20 minutes before I hit the gym I have my Thrive's homemade chocolate blueberry energy bar, the pre workout energizer drink in Berry, this enables me to rock my workout, and the Berry Performance Protein post workout aids in my recovery so I can do it all over again! I love this whole line! I am sharing it with everyone I meet and know! Thanks to Brendan all I have to do is workout - he has done all the rest!

I find thinking about getting out for my walks and exercising more stressful than just doing it!  :)

It's still dark, I can't run before work. BUT: The dog has to go out anyway - if I run or walk doesn't matter. It will get warmer if I run though.

hmm . . "It's too cold!"  I am new to runing so I am slowing buying some cold weather gear for running and hopefully some Cross country Skiing. Still on the list are an ear/head band, gloves and vest and a couple more Under Armor shirts.

Definitely this one: it's just too cold to get up early and freeze before I have to!!! I work on this by laying out my workout gear, planning my activity, and gearing up the night before.

Every morning before working out, I close my eyes and envision myself training and seeing the end results: strong, independent, healthy, and happy.  This works and motivates me all the time.

Excuse: It's raining and dark and I'm afraid I'll fall on the slippery sidewalk!  Excuse buster: I don't let myself shower until I've worked out-I know I won't want to go into work with greasy hair, so I'd better earn that shampoo! :)

I get up to run at 4am, but a cold rain has me closing the door and turning back inside. So there's always the treadmill, some weights, or an exercise video to get some cross-training in.

There are no excuses!  I am up every morning during the week to go to the gym before work.  I then go at lunch and sometimes after work.  It is my lifestyle and I won't give it up for anything.  My health is more important, I can't look after and be with the ones I love if my health suffers.

A warm bed on a cold morning is really hard to leave.  But the feeling of resisting the temptation of rolling over and going back to sleep far exceeds the few extra minutes of shut-eye.  Knowing there are other people out there braving the cold gives me motivation to join them.

"It's freezing outside. My feet are going to get all wet and my running shoes ruined by all the wet snow.". When this thought comes I'm going to look at my son who has special needs and remember I'm running to bring about awareness for 22q( a deletion of the 22nd chromosome), I'm running to maintain the mental, physical, and emotional health needed to give him the best care possible, and I'm running because I love it! The initial cold is not as shocking as hopping into an icy frigid pond in May.  In a few minutes I'll warm up and the chill will pass. I've done this before and my feet will be fine. There is no shortage of new shoes at our local running store, and I can always purchase them cheaper online. Looking ahead to the invigorating feeling that follows, and knowing the difference being made in the lives of others, that's what's going to get me out that door! In fact, we had our 1st snow fall this morning, I think I'll head on out! See you on the trail! :)

My best excuse would be just plain laziness. How soon 'not now' becomes 'never'.” Martin Luther says. So, my plan to overcome this excuse is to have a goal on paper that says, "I have so much energy when I run at least 2 times a week, cycle at least 50 miles a week and strength train 4 times a week. I am addicted to it. I have the body of an athlete and I love how I feel and look." I see myself at my ideal size and weight and enjoy the benefits of a disciplined lifestyle. And of course the plant based diet is giving me the energy I need to THRIVE!

I work out with a group of people called the Red Eyes - we meet at Goderich Crossfit - which is basically a couple barns filled with equipment (we do most of our workout outside) and our awesome Crossfit coach...I have to drive about 15 minutes to get there which I don't look forward to in the cold, snowy winter months up here in Ontario Canada...but I love it...so to make it more appealing to get up on those days I plan to purchase a new brightly coloured toque and nice warm workout gloves...also on my list are the Adidas climaproof winter training shoes...have to keep those toes warm!
