November Thrive Challenge

Inspired by the lifestyle changes recommended in Thrive and Thrive in 30, the Vega Community is here to keep you on track, share in your successes, and inspire even greater change to help you achieve optimal health.

We’re looking for natural ways to boost our immune system this flu season. Health experts say it’s a healthy diet that keeps our immune systems strong. What are some of the best immune boosting tips, for those of us who are already eating a healthy diet?

For example, Chlorella is fresh water, single cell, green algae, packed with nutrients and is great for boosting our immune system. If taken daily, it helps to increase the number of “fighter” cells in our body, which defend against viruses, bacteria and toxins.

For the Thrive Challenge this month, we want you to share your tips for boosting immunity, for a chance to win a small tub of Vega Whole Food Health Optimizer AND a bottle of ChlorEssence!

More on Chlorella: Brendan Brazier chooses Chlorella as a daily body detoxifier. In this excerpt from, The Thrive Diet (Thrive in the US), Brendan states that “Directly enhancing the immune system at a cellular level, chlorella treats the cause of any possible breach – as opposed to fighting the onset of sickness (as is all too often done with pharmaceutical drugs).”

Did you know that one serving of Vega Whole Food Health Optimizer contains a daily dose of chlorella? Vega’s nutritionist, Peggy K shares more on the benefits of chlorella in this video on MyVegaTV.

I think if you already have a healthy diet and you still get the sick, there probubly isn't some seceret food your forgetting about!  Make sure your keeping your body moving by exercising.  If you already eat well and you exercise and you still get sick, look at your attitude.  I think mood is a huge indicator on the strength of your immunity.  I have always been a glass half full kind of girl and even when I was really young and not eating the healthiest, I bearly ever got sick.  On the flip side, I know several people who carry around that negative baggage and continue to get sick often.

If you are doing these handful of things to keep your body happy and healthy...you shouldn't have to worry about getting sick often at all!

All of these suggestions are excellent.  But let us not forget how important self-care in the way of rest, exercise, impeccable hygiene (especially washing hands whenever you're out in public) and discipline to stay away from foods that cause inflammation in the body, especially sugar and other refined foods.

Put your mind to work as a caring ife manager this season!

Garlic and ginger to keep me healthy! Also after a being out in the cold, a hot beverage of tea (often nettle, because I'm a sustainability nut and it grows near my home). I also have a ton of spices in my foods and drinks, but more so because I just crave them, mostly it's cinnamon that I crave, but I have a lot of chili peppers and cumin and nutmeg too. Lastly, after coming in from being out in cold I put on a big sweater or wrap myself in a blanket to warm my body up as fast as possible (so I can spend more time outside.)

I love green smoothies and adding Vega to them.  I actually add greens to the smoothies I make for everyone else in the house, just not as much as I put in mine. They don't even know they're getting a boost of vitamins and brushing out there systems :)

I also add chlorella powder, sometimes chia and other things like maca to my smoothies ever so often to boost immunity.  Honey is another great thing to eat from the plants in your area.  I will start taking bee pollen soon to boost my immune system before Spring too :)

I love hot yoga. I try to go at least once a week to balance my running and strength training. When the weather gets cold I love the comfort of cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger butternut squash. Butternut squash (and most winter squashes) are low in fat and calories, but packed with vitamins: E and Thiamin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Calcium and Magnesium, and a very good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Potassium and Manganese. I like to steam some spinach or kale on the side. I also brew my own Kombucha and make my own Kimchi as I believe natural probiotics ward off colds and flu.

I like to visit the sauna followed by an ice cold shower! If you don't have access to a sauna I believe in taking ice cold showers! It's kept me healthy and invigorated for years and it's easy on the utility bills too!

One tip non-food-related is to just make sure that, in the chilly, dry winter months, you use a humidifer. Sticking a cast iron pot of water on top of your woodstove can make a world of difference.

Food-wise, I eat a LOT of greens in the winter to up my intake of vital nutrients. This can easily be accomplished with green smoothies, salads, and the like. I also make sure I'm getting warmer foods in and local foods. I'm a big fan of root veggies in the winter, as that is what my body naturally gravitates towards. I have found that by eating what's natural in the season, I have no trouble with sickness. Also, avocados. When I was on all raw food, that was my source of fat in the winter. Some people do nuts and seeds, as well. Your body will naturally crave fat because of the cold weather- it wants some extra "padding," if you will. :]

I usually don't "boost" my immunity, because I'm always working on it. By keeping a healthy diet of leafy greens, fruits, vegetables (both raw & cooked), nuts, and seeds, there should be no issue with "catching a cold."

Someone mentioned water, exercise, and fresh air, all of which I would heartily agree with. I'm also a big fan of keeping tabs on Dr. Doug Graham's list of essential elements for ideal balance (found in The 80/10/10 Diet).

Of course, this post would not be here without Vega, which is an AMAZING product. It helps me keep my immune system functioning with its mostly raw ingredients, pure & whole food nutrition, and allergen-free content (I'm dairy- and gluten-intolerant). Chlorella, mentioned in the Vega blog, is incredible for clearing out the body, which is important for keeping the digestive & immune systems healthy. :]

I think it's very important to eat a majority of raw foods in your daily diet to stay healthy. However, my tried and true way to stay healthy through the flu season is to excercise every day. I am a runner and I truly believe that by getting out there everyday and taking in fresh air, gettin the heart pumping and blood flowing, you are keeping your immune system in tip top condition. Along with my excercise routine I make sure that I have my daily WFHO vanilla chai shake as well. So far so good!

I take a liquid vitamin D3 solution starting late Fall through Spring! Didn't get one cold or flu virus last year and neither did my husband or 3 kids! Also, drink a fresh pressed "green" juice every morning and a green smoothie in the afternoon keeping everything before the evening meal completely RAW and nutrient packed! Lastly, exercise daily, keep stress to a minimum AND get at least 8 hours of sleep at night!!!!! :)

When at the tipping point there is only one thing I do, I go to bed, I never let it go past the tipping point; this habit has kept me healthy for many years without the flu shot. However you must know your body and hear what is telling you in order to be successful; if you disregard what your body is telling you, be ready to be in bed a lot more than a day or two, that is, without counting the extra days  it takes to recuperate once you are up and around. Prevention is the best antidote to sickness!!

Basic stuff:  drink lots of water, exercise in some way daily, get enough sleep, and everything I put in my body if fuel so I eat mindfully..no crap.  Only eat fresh, plant based foods.

I enjoy a green smoothie everyday loaded with vegies and fruit. Keep to a 100%  whole, natural, plant food diet and exercise six days a week.

I boost my immunity by upping my intake of raw greens and citrus packed with vitamin c, such as oranges and lemons.

Exercise, a variety of greens (many that I grow on my own), garlic (but of course), chlorella (and a variety of other supplements that we purchase at Hippocrates Health Institute), my own sprouts that I grow in the house (usually have about 5 different ones going but try to always have sunflower and pea sprouts), one Hippocrates green drink a day (cukes, sunflower sprouts, garlic, pea sprouts, and celery), usually a green smoothie sometime during the day (mostly for breakfast), and many times a week a shot of wheatgrass (usually what I grow myself as well).  I can't believe how infrequently I get sick now, though I still do get a cold or so per year.  My wife ,who had cancer, now eats this way and it has made a world (well more than a world) of difference in her life as well.  Combined with TRX, this diet and many of the foods in Brendan's book have improved my mountain biking endurance and allowed me to ride with greater strength as well!

I exercise daily and eat a high fiber vegan diet. I take ChlorEssence every day and just added Spirulina. Plus VEGA WHole Health Optimizer. I drink a hot glass of fresh lemon water every morning and if I'm feeling like i'm getting sick (which is almost never) then I drink tons of green tea.

Besides eating a healthy "Thrive" diet...I consume the following concoction at least once a day:

Mix:

2 to 3 tablespoons of Cayenne Pepper

2 shots of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar

Splash of Agave.

This will kill any virus and keep you healthy.  If I feel a cold coming on...I consume this concoction at least 2 times per day.  You may need to work up to the 3 tablespoons of Cayenne Pepper.

We have added a very healthy dose of fresh garlic to many of the dishes we eat.  Plus each day we take both a whole fruit, whole veggie and fish oil supplement.  Through the day, plenty of water and green tea.  If the sniffles do come around, keep warm, rest and maintain a positive outlook.

I drink lots of water, green tea, greens, berries, and spice spice spice.  Real food!

I drink at least a tablespoon of Dr. Shultz Super Tonic a day. I have 1 tablespoon of EFA Oil a day (usually on whatever I eat for dinner) and Chia Seeds(usually in my morning beverage). I try to follow an alkaline based diet and I include Vega Whole Food Optimizer, Vega Protein Bar, and/or Vega Recovery in my daily diet. I also engage in some form of exercise 6 days a week. Since I work in an ER I make sure to practice good hand hygeine. When I feel a cold coming on I increase my dosage of Dr. Shultz Super Tonic.
