November Thrive Challenge

Inspired by the lifestyle changes recommended in Thrive and Thrive in 30, the Vega Community is here to keep you on track, share in your successes, and inspire even greater change to help you achieve optimal health.

We’re looking for natural ways to boost our immune system this flu season. Health experts say it’s a healthy diet that keeps our immune systems strong. What are some of the best immune boosting tips, for those of us who are already eating a healthy diet?

For example, Chlorella is fresh water, single cell, green algae, packed with nutrients and is great for boosting our immune system. If taken daily, it helps to increase the number of “fighter” cells in our body, which defend against viruses, bacteria and toxins.

For the Thrive Challenge this month, we want you to share your tips for boosting immunity, for a chance to win a small tub of Vega Whole Food Health Optimizer AND a bottle of ChlorEssence!

More on Chlorella: Brendan Brazier chooses Chlorella as a daily body detoxifier. In this excerpt from, The Thrive Diet (Thrive in the US), Brendan states that “Directly enhancing the immune system at a cellular level, chlorella treats the cause of any possible breach – as opposed to fighting the onset of sickness (as is all too often done with pharmaceutical drugs).”

Did you know that one serving of Vega Whole Food Health Optimizer contains a daily dose of chlorella? Vega’s nutritionist, Peggy K shares more on the benefits of chlorella in this video on MyVegaTV.

As soon as I feel the slightest feeling of something coming on or if I know my immunity has been compromised by being around sick people, I do the following:

Immunity Boosting Tea:

Fresh Ginger, Fresh Lemon Juice, small sprinkle of Cayenne and Honey to taste - mixed with pure water.

Immunity Boosting Soup:

Veggie Broth, Onions, Garlic, Diced Sweet Potato or Winter Squash, Chopped Kale, Sliced Shittake Mushrooms - heated over low heat. Remove from heat and stir in as much MISO as you can handle.

Immunity Boosting Smoothie:

Green Powder or handfuls of fresh spinach or kale, Blueberries, Fresh Carrot Juice, Fresh Orange Juice, Banana and Fresh Ginger. Little honey or agave to taste.

If for some reason I can't prevent it and we end up with chest congestion - I chop up onions as much as possible to release the juices and I wrap them up in a paper towel and put them on my chest for a couple hours (a good movie is a great time to do this). You can also put them on your feet and cover with a sock and sleep with it over night.

I sweat out toxins and use detoxify-ing liver cleansing teas. The first line of defense in your immune system is protein, so I make sure I get enough. If you have have trouble sleeping, have pain, want to lose weight or are interested in increased energy, message me!

I maintain a reasonably strict diet, although, if I am out and rarely I may have a slice of pizza or scoop of ice cream with friends. LOL My daily diet consist of juicing carrots, celery, cucumber, apple, and wrap kale with romaine, spinach and juice it, but afterwards it all goes in a blender for a banana. I eat oatmeal and 3 to 4 egg whites (3 plus dozen egg whites a week). I eat microwave frozen broccoli 4lbs a week. I add broccoli to every meal. I also go through several lbs. a week of dark leafy lettuce. If I add anything, it would be balsamic vinegar. Whatever fruit is under a dollar a pound and hopefully is over 5lbs a week. During the summer months, fruit can average 7 plus lbs. a week. I am attempting to cut back on chk breast, although currently I am a lb. a week and have been several lbs. a week. I eat kashie protein bars, usually a box a week. I also eat cliff bars about one a day or every other day. I am a 53 yr old male that displays ridiculous amounts of energy. I wake at 5am and go to the gym for an hour. In the afternoon I can easily go for a 40 mile bike ride which do a couple times a week and sometimes more, but also ride sat and sun. I do attend the gym usually 7 days a week. I am 6ft and weight in around 177 to 180lbs. We are what we eat, drink and the air we breathe. The dirtiest air we breathe is usually the air you breathe at home. Shocking! Contact me to find out more 702 358 3488 curt

I normally eat a diet full of leafy greens, vegetables and lots of fruit. But, whenever I feel like a cold is creeping up on me, I boost my immune system with not only Chlorella but also some Vitamin C from some Camu. It's worked great in the past. I will either fight the cold or get over it in a day or so!

I do zumba both at home and in a class at least every other day. I take Vitamin C supplements and also love Chloressence I feel healthier knowing I'm putting high quality nutrients in my body. I started my day with Whole Foods Health Optimizer and love teh chocolate and vanilla chai flavors. I drink green tea regularly and have been vegetarian for 4 years. I'm transitioning to vegan and slowly reducin the amount of dairy intake. Surprisingly, I start to feel sick to my stomach when I have dairy after a long period of time my body is without it. I also have been starting to take macasure to help balance my mood. The new line of Vega Sport bars are fabulous and I share them with friends who love the chocolate coconut. They are delicious! I hydrate with Pre-workout Sports Optimizer before I take my dance classes and can notice the difference. I feel greater surge of energy and feel overall happier and energized. I'm pumped up to go! Hope you all are having a fabulous day!

20-30min of excercise every morning and a nutritious breakfast with lots of vitamin C. The neti pot also works wonders.

I fought off a cold/flu bug last week so I'm feeling pretty good about that. I made sure to get plenty of rest time. I still did my regular workouts 6x week but made sure to take plenty of recovery vega products. I had straight green tea 2x per day. I always make a large batch of green smoothie mix that lasts for a few days so I was drinking that 2x per day as well. I added extra chlorophyll to it. I also loaded up on dulse on my green salad at night as well as added 2 kiwi throughout the day with my meals or snacks.  My diet is 90% vegetarian so I'm always loading up on many plant based foods as it is and avoid processed foods 100% so not really much twaeking to that I simply added more "greens" than usual, and really kept my fluids up with the green tea, water and coconut water. I re read a few sections of brendans thrive books so i could freshen up on some immunity foods/info. I managed to fight off the flu while many others around me seem to be getting sick.

I eat fairly healthy all-year round, but I admit if I feel a cold coming on, I pound a lot of vitamin supplements: C, B12, Zinc, A, etc, then schedule an extra hour of sleep until I feel better.  I also chug carrot and orange juice.

Lots of fresh greens, plenty of exercise, 7-8 hours of sleep and ginger in any form (tea, added to meals, etc).
Comment by Heather J on November 7, 2011 at 2:40am
I just try to eat more fresh greens, lots of fresh spinach salad. Yum.
Comment by Caleigh on November 6, 2011 at 7:17pm

I start the day with fresh lemon juice in water, followed by a greens drink. I try not to forget to include berries and protein from nuts and seeds on days when I'm craving a warm breakfast, as opposed to a smoothie. Staying well hydrated throughout the day and TRYING to get enough sleep, fresh air and exercise!

I have some kind of fresh juice every day, or at least almost every day, and on days that I cannot, I supplement with green superfood powders...I try to have something raw or fresh with every meal...and I just cannot stress enough the importance of greens in my life!!!  Green juices and smoothies are the way I kick disease to the curb (in addition to my spiritual life and dependence on my Creator)!  Also, rest, rest, rest...I can totally tell when any of these items is out-of-whack, as I start to feel sluggish and unhealthy.

To keep my immunity high, I get plenty of sleep, 7-8 quality hours, I eat nutrient rich meals with lots of veggies, healthy grains like quinoa, and green smoothies with Vega Vanilla Protein Powder. I also take a Vitamin C supplement. I workout and do yoga and recently doing more meditations...all of these things keep me in good shape to beat any bug! :)

To keep my immune system up at running - make sure I get enough sleep, exercise, eat healthy and have an alkaline diet, drink lots of water, take good supplements (besides the regular vitamins, etc, one is Kyolic Immune and another would be a probiotic as your immune system is partly in your small intestine too)
Comment by Bonita O'Neill on November 5, 2011 at 3:40pm
I follow up my morning run/walk with a Vega smoothie loaded with fruit. Sometimes I add cocoa and agave nectar if I need a "sweet' fix. I'm good to go for the rest of the day.

I make sure I stay with my exercise routine and consume a Vega shake daily. I also try new fruits or vegetables when I go to the Farmers Market. I really into purple sweet potatoes and Raw Honey right now. It is very good for replenishing my glycogen stores :) I think getting a variety of bright fruits and vegetables in the diet daily will only make you immune system stronger. I also get plenty of sleep and do yoga to stay in balance.

I eat lots of kale, spinach, garlic, onions, ginger and lemon.  I have had trouble eating as much raw during the winter.  I get too cold and want hot food like soup and stir-fry veggies.  But I start each day with a raw green smoothie and try to eat a raw salad every day as well.

Boost your immunity this month with a tip from Traditional Chinese Medicine. Stimulate the 'wei qi' or the immune function by brushing the skin with a brush before and during showering or bathing. Increasing circulation to the skin, the body's largest organ and stimulating 'trash pickup' by accelerating the vascular and lymphatic sysmtems is an easy daily addition to a health diet and lifestyle. The brushing motion goes towards the center of the body from the tips of fingers and toes. Be vigorous enough to cause a tingling sensation and pinking of the skin color. Be well!

I make a flu fighting tea by boiling ginger and garlic, then I add lemon and enjoy. So yummy.
