November Thrive Challenge

Inspired by the lifestyle changes recommended in Thrive and Thrive in 30, the Vega Community is here to keep you on track, share in your successes, and inspire even greater change to help you achieve optimal health.

We’re looking for natural ways to boost our immune system this flu season. Health experts say it’s a healthy diet that keeps our immune systems strong. What are some of the best immune boosting tips, for those of us who are already eating a healthy diet?

For example, Chlorella is fresh water, single cell, green algae, packed with nutrients and is great for boosting our immune system. If taken daily, it helps to increase the number of “fighter” cells in our body, which defend against viruses, bacteria and toxins.

For the Thrive Challenge this month, we want you to share your tips for boosting immunity, for a chance to win a small tub of Vega Whole Food Health Optimizer AND a bottle of ChlorEssence!

More on Chlorella: Brendan Brazier chooses Chlorella as a daily body detoxifier. In this excerpt from, The Thrive Diet (Thrive in the US), Brendan states that “Directly enhancing the immune system at a cellular level, chlorella treats the cause of any possible breach – as opposed to fighting the onset of sickness (as is all too often done with pharmaceutical drugs).”

Did you know that one serving of Vega Whole Food Health Optimizer contains a daily dose of chlorella? Vega’s nutritionist, Peggy K shares more on the benefits of chlorella in this video on MyVegaTV.

A spoonful of spirulina added to my green smoothies.

Cleansing one day each week and a long cleanse every few months. All raw with vega whole food health optimizer added to the daily green smoothies.

I have kicked every virus that dared enter these doors to the curb in 24 hours or less since starting that regimen!

I have my greens drink, coconut oil every day as well as my multi, 3000 mg Vit C, 5,000 IU D3, mushroom extract, colostrum extract.  If I am feeling like I am getting something, I also take oil  of oregano.  I try to not have much sugar or processed foods either - eat low carb mostly.  And of course exercise and get enough sleep.

I make a Kale, Mango, Banana smoothie every morning with Almond milk, flax seed and coconut oil.  It gives me the nutrients, immunity and energy i need especially this time of year during the winter in the midwest.  I also drink Vega Wholefood Optimizer for lunch to get chlorella as well as all the other great benefits...

Hello! My name is Adair. I have been a vegan for 3 years now. This summer I came out to California from the Southeast to do the Pacific Coast highway with a girlfriend. I canceled my flight three times, quit my job, and moved out here 2 weeks later. I loved it! I was stressed out teaching high school Spanish back in Charleston, SC and it was just not making me happy. Now I am a personal trainer out in California, work at a winery on the weekends, and I am starting nutrition school in March. There are lots of great things that I do to boost my immunity. I drink Elderberry syrup for preventative before and during a cold. I will also take yin Qiao before a cold or Cold Away during one. As far as food. I make a vega chocolate shake in the morning daily to stay fit and active. I add strawberries, blueberries, flax seeds, flax oil, high PH water, and ice! Through out the rest of the day, I will make a juice ( kale, spinach, carrots, ginger, garlic, and apple) - That keeps the doctor away! Lentils are also my go to for food during the day to fill me up. I also love Alicia Silverstone's Magical healing soup for immune boosting powers. Check out my blog for more ideas on how to stay fit, healthy, and happy! I love Veggies

I drink green smoothies (some with ginger in them), plus there's a soup I like to make called Harira which has ginger, cinnamon and turmeric in it which aids in recovery from exercise (plus has loads of protein from the chickpeas and lentils).  The goal is to eat well with a vegan diet, eat lots of raw foods, plenty of greens, have good workouts with great recovery shakes, and excellent sleep at night to help you along your way.  I also make it a habit not to cook my garlic too much, prefering to throw it in at the end of the cooking stage so that it just steeps in the food like tea, which makes it smell delicious and still gives you the benefits of the garlic.  Another favorite is a Chinese cabbage/romaine/grated carrot/celery salad with a handful of nuts sprinkled on top with a ginger miso dressing (from the Moosewood cookbook).  All crunchy goodness with that yummy taste.  The last, but not the least important for me is to keep warm.  I live in northern British Columbia just on the other side of the Coast Mountains so we get a lot of rain and snow, which makes it chilly most of the year (especially last year).  I have found it vital to keep warm with a dry, constant,  radiating heat (the woodstove) which keeps me warm enough to eat all those raw veggies, and have the energy to exercise as much as I do.  I have noticed that when I just use the furnace I use a lot of energy just keeping warm in between furnace blasts, which just sabotages my efforts to eat well and exercise.

Lot's a healthy vegetables, especially greens - fresh green juices and smoothies. Also, plenty of exercise and water and washing of hands.

I make sure I eat a massive variety of high nutrient plant foods - especially those with lots of colour - the more the meal looks like a rainbow the better! also: lots of dynamic & challenging full body fitness to extend my range of motion making me feel fantastic. Yoga to restore the body, chill and sleep well. Oh and also do something everyday that gives me joy!  It comes to 3 basic choices - eat right, exercise right and sleep right.

Hi there! I am new to this community and excited to learn! As a person who has fought through a strain of streptacoccis, smoking and substance abuse my immunities are trashed. Ive been sick 3 times in less than 2 months. I am now committed to health. I want to thrive! My first step has been research research research. Below are my current findings and practices:

Drybrush daily - to promote circulation  and lymphatic drainage.

Reduce stress - through deep breathing and tulsi tea

Excersice - as much as i love plyos and running my heart out, i try not to put too much strain on myself as i am currently weakened (always give time for recovery!)

Fresh morning air!!

Proper sleep - this is unique to everyone

Nutrition - I try to eat mindfully, reduce harmful consumption and include vitamin d and clorophyll. I am considering raw veganism and juicing...

Vega whole food optomizer - it makes me feel soooo good. I can only take 1 scoop per day as i must budget my consumption, when I cant afford it i miss how it makes me feel so much. Im working towards learning to save better so that I can always have it!

Positive, optomistic and gratefull attitude - this helps anyone feel better, even thoses around you!

Thank you for this chance to share!!!

Drink lot's of green tea and take a multi vitamin. And have a green smoothie as often as possible :)

Comment by Karen Davis on November 13, 2011 at 4:49am

Peggy K's #1 tip in her top 5 immune boosting tips is to get your vitamin D!

Getting this naturally from the sun is my new winter goal.  I have always been one to come inside by November and use my "dreadmill" until I come out of hybernation in the Spring.   I vow to embrace the cold NH winter and run outside this year.  I have some great cold weather gear and fully intend to beat the winter blahs by staying outside instead of in my basement!

I drink a berry smoothie and green juice on a daily basis.

Kale - Love it!  Love it!  Love it!

Comment by MJ Collette on November 9, 2011 at 6:05pm

Kale! In one form  or another! I firmly believe in that leafy green! Also, onion, garlic, ginger.  Those three things will kick your immune system into overdrive! And, if you're feeling yucky and bit of cayenne pepper will help clear your nasal passages, etc!!!! And, obviously, Vega ;)

oh, and i also swear by an apple a day, and chia seeds!!

Thank you for the opportunity to share!!

A great tip to storing and adding ginger to your meals.

We all know ginger is great for the immune system and can be included in your meals, snacks, and drinks easily. Next time you buy a couple of fingers of ginger throw them in a freezer proof bag. Get yourself a zester or box grater. Anytime you want to add fresh ginger to smoothies, soups, even tea just pull the ginger out of the freezer and grate in as much as you want. Freezing the ginger actually makes the grating process easier. Keeping the skin on also gives you a better flavour and more nutrients.

Hope this helps keep some people from getting sick!

This is my first Thrive Challenange!!  I'm happy the topic is boosting immunity through foods!  I make sure I have fresh garlic and fresh parsley, kiwi, apple, pinaeapple and kale and spinach in my morning green smoothie.  Lots of berries for snack drizzled with some non-dairy yogurt, sunflower seeds and flaxseed.  Keep moving....yoga or at least get outside for some sunshine and a walk. Drink lots of green tea and rest (weekend nap).  Spinach salad and veggie soups. Soaking in a nice hot bath and use my sinus rinse kit.  I treat myself to a full body massage.
