May Thrive Challenge

Inspired by the lifestyle changes recommended in Thrive and Thrive in 30, the Vega Community is here to keep you on track, share in your successes, and inspire even greater change to help you achieve optimal health.

Hemp is one of the Earth's most nutritious, sustainable, and versatile crops, dating back more than 10,000 years. Not only does it provide solutions in numerous industries including food, clothing, extreme sports, and alternative fuels (such as hemp biodiesel), hemp can be used in over 25, 000 known applications. Who knew?!

Here are some ways to incorporate hemp into your life and make a stand for sustainability – be it our health, planet or economy!

  • Clothing – Three times more durable and providing greater breathability than cotton, invest in long-lasting hemp clothing and work-out gear.

  • Foods – Free of gluten and other common allergens, hemp foods are rich in easily-digestible protein, EFAs and naturally-occurring vitamins and minerals. Check your local health food store and stock up on the variety of hemp foods available including nut butters, frozen desserts and more!

  • Body Care – Switch to moisturizing, natural body care products made with hemp oil, such as lotions, soaps or lip balms.

I use hemp in all my smooties and use in the hemp seeds mixed with coconut flakes, dried cramberries raisons, sesame seeds and pumpkin seeds for a carry along snack.

I use Hemp Hearts TM daily

I sprinkle them liberally in salads, on yogurt, and in my Vega smoothie like Robert B.  Being vegetarian, they're an essential part of knowing that I'm getting the protein and essential oils I need.

Sometimes I just eat them with a spoon.

There's also a great hemp and flax seed oil blend out there.

I made it a point to wear my pink high top sneakers made of hemp this month.  Its a great starting point to tell others about the many uses of the hemp plant.

Along with adding hemp hearts to my normal daily food items, smoothies, salad, etc I wrote to my U.S Govt reps to tell them all the ways the healthy, truly no waste hemp plant can be used.

I have always used the Body Shop Hemp cream for my hands as I find it is the only thing that prevents the dry cracking skin caused by our horribly cold winters!!

I recently just began using Hemp milk instead of Almond Milk to mix with my Vega Whole Food Optimzer shakes in the morning (vanilla chai...yum!!)

As I am beginning the Thrive diet this week I will be incorporating hemp hearts into my daily salad, and I just purchased a container of hemp protein and a bottle of hemp oil to be able to begin making the receipes in the diet!! So excited!!!

I have already incorporated hemp into my life; I use Hemp powder in my protien shake, put hemp seeds in my salad and have warm hemp milk at night with vanilla stevia to satisfy sugar craving...

I love hemp!!! I try to incorporate it many times a day.  I have a scoop of hemp protien in the mornings before my workout.  (I actually LOVE The chocolate flavor and I eat it with a spoon!).  (or sometimes I"ll make pudding out of it and one scoop vega smoothie mix (with just a little water or coffee for a kick).  I also add hemp seeds to my salads or lettuce wraps (I also find myself when in a hurry and need some protien and a quick bite, I"ll eat a few teaspoons of these out of the bag as well! haha).  I just recently (since this challenge), started incorporating the hemp oil, OMG! Sooo good!  I use it on my salads or just plain veggies, I love that stuff . I even got my fiance eating it too! LOVE hemp! =)

I love everything about hemp. I enjoy eating the wonderful seeds and oil. I have used soap made from it.  I also have organic shirts made from it.  I wish more people would use it.

My thrive challenge to help others thrive! As a holistic health educator I want to assist clients with healthier eating habits.  Introducing them to new foods that they can try out for more creative receipes for their meal servings.  I know that these new foods are not familiar to a lot of people. So, I would workshops talking about these foods and how to incorporate them into their meal planning.

I have hemp in my daily shake with vega optimizer and I just got some hemp oil...now the trick is to introduce it to the kids in their pancakes or cereal!

I can't believe I almost missed this challenge! I literally just started incorporating hemp into my diet on a more regular basis lately!

I use hemp milk as a milk alternative on occasion.

But I adore hemp seeds in my cereal to add a kick of protein and healthy fats. I cannot believe how much protein is in a couple tablespoons!

I also use a hemp protein powder on occasion as a Vega alternative (or mix with the Vega optimizer), and also a hemp fiber powder. Fabulous.

I love the hemp seeds added to salads and wraps!

I have hemp seeds and oil most mornings in a green smoothy, will add seeds to rice, or mix it with avocado for a sandwich or wrap. It's all about being creative.
Comment by Marilyn McCormick on May 10, 2011 at 4:20pm
Hemp seed oil, tremendous in providing protein to our food, when added to a greens drink offers strong nutritional balance in our diet. Eat it, drink it, wear it, carry it, wash it, live it in your home. Pop it on your head when the sun shines hot. When hemp substances are settled around in your lifestyle, your creative juices will lead you to discover where else it might fit a need. Golly, don't eat your hat or purse, but hemp makes them grand!

I am going to start using hemp seeds as a salad topping and try a new Hemp Pancake recipe for breakfast.  I already look for beauty products made with hemp, so am anxious to find more brands incorporating hemp as well as find some hemp clothing.

I already enjoy hemp seeds and hemp oil (love the EFA Oil Blend!) in salads and smoothies, and I love hemp mylk and ice cream. I'm curious about using it for body care though -- I hadn't really thought about it. So that's definitely something I'll try this month.

I LOVE YOU HEMP!!

I am running my first half marathon June 11 in beautiful Ludington, Michigan right on the shores of the lake.  I am intensly nervous yet excited all at once!  It is very apparant to train physically for something like this, but training nutritionally should be factored in too!!

Fabulous post workout smoothie inspired by a youtube video Tim Vanorden recommended:

-2 ripe organic bananas

-dulse flakes

-NUTIVA HEMP SEEDS!

-organic flax seeds

-pinch of cinnamon

-Optional:  Any fresh fruit you want!

You can watch him make it here:

I really really really want to wine this time!!!  I could use some health optimizer and I have never tried the EFA Antioxidant Oil Blend!! :) :) :)

Healthy Hugs, Meg!

I'm on a 3 week moderate cleanse and am incorporating hemp daily. The other night I simmered potatoes and leeks in water then added fresh nettles towards the end. After blending that up and pouring some into a bowl, some dried red onions were mixed in. Of course, it was topped off with a good dollop of hemp seeds and then drizzled with hemp oil too! This was so unbelievably delicious!!
