June Thrive Challenge

Inspired by the lifestyle changes recommended in Thrive and Thrive in 30, the Vega Community is here to keep you on track, share in your successes, and inspire even greater change to help you achieve optimal health.

June is Great Outdoors Month and we’re dedicating our Thrive Challenge to celebrating the benefits of outdoor exercise and the nearby landscapes by which we live!

With Summer weather moving in, why not take yoga practice to a park, a daily run to a nearby hiking trail or try a new type of outdoor cross training?

We challenge you to exercise outside and in doing so, relieve stress, increase energy and heighten your sense of wellbeing!

In addition to my daily exercise routine I plan to start walking uphill twice a week.  Where I live (just out side of Pittsburgh) there are some very steep hills, as we live on the banks of the Monongahela river.

I plan to take my running to the trails this summer! I usually run just through neighborhoods around my house, but I want to do more trail running and exploration! I am also going to take some swim lessons, if that goes well I will be swimming outdoors this summer. I am also getting a bike soon. Can you tell I am thinking triathlon in the future? :)

Every Morning when it is still cool and the Sun is starting to peer out of the dark sky - I take my Yoga mat out to my backyard and SMILE.

Sun Salutations; this is a moving asana (a combo of yoga poses & connecting movements) in yoga. I use it to be joyful for the Sun, my Life (health), and the Day that lies before me.

I also Sweat and great the Sun as the first thing I do when I wake up in the morning ~ certainly more of a wake up call than an alarm clock!

: ) Have fun Exercising Outside!

In June, I plan to continue my trail running training. Last month I placed 1st in my category in a 10K trail run in Big Basin. Not far from my neighborhood is a preserve of forest and farmland where I train for hills and love the refreshing smells of eucalyptus. Along the way, Yoga poses are essential to balance my cardio stress! I carry homemade Thrive goodies with me too, made from my garden ingredients. I'm very proud of my wheatgrass this year! This month, I will be adding mountain biking on Fridays with a group of trainers.

I have given up my treadmill and taken to running outside every day and am amazed at how much more enjoyable my runs are.....and how much farther I can go too!!!

Also, I just purchased a new bike last night and plan on starting biking to work every morning. Figure it will benefit the environment, my body, as well as my wallet!!! Haha!!!

Other outdoor activites I enjoy are rollerblading, hiking and am anxiously awaiting the weather to warm up so I can get back to snorkelling!!!

Love summer!!!! (and love Vega products - - pick me to win please please please!!!!!)

Well, in addition to taking my runs outdoors, I will be farming! I help at a CSA once a week.

I'll be doing Park Yoga this month, plus my hobby of letterboxing should take me on some nice hikes.

I've been running in the mornings and I find it a god way to start my day in nature. For my cool down, I do a walking meditation or just enjoy the smell of the outdoors!

My boyfriend and I are starting to take our bootcamp (Bodyweight 500 Challenge) outdoors.  We also skip the treadmills and opt for walking the hilly areas that surround our home.  Which is great, because at 90+ degrees every day, we really work up a sweat!

Also hiking, practicing yoga, and biking around town.  Summer is so great for being outdoors.

I live right at the foot of a mountainous city park, I plan to start walking, hiking, and eventually running the trails. I also just planted many flowers in my backyard, practicing my yoga outside would really be a treat.

I live in Washington state and if the weather ever gets nicer and the snow in the mountains melt I plan to get in a lot of hiking this summer. Id also like to give my trail running shoes a try.

I'll be running in my first marathon on Jun5...Rock n Roll San Diego but after recovery I will start training for my SECOND marathon (Nike Women's in San Francisco) by doing all of my runs outdoors.  I also plan on RE-starting my yoga practice which will be quite lovely when done in the backyard by the pool and summer flowers. =)

I have come up with so many excuses for not running outside as the mother of 6 young children.  But in the last few weeks I have come up with a great idea that gets us all exercising outside.  My 11, 9, 7 and 5 year olds are great bike riders.  My 3 and 2 year olds love to go fast in the stroller and now all of us are enjoying increasingly longer runs (for me) and bike rides (for the kids).

I hope to take advantage of many free classes outdoors in NYC.  like free yoga in the park with Lulu lemon.  Also, out door running, walking, and just to put a mat outside, do a a few downward dogs, pilates, push ups, sit ups, and any other workout using my own body weight as resistance!

I started running last month with my dog, Cosmo.  Now that school is out, I hope to continue to get up early and run with Cosmo.

I have been working out outside for almost a year now running, hiking and taking cross fit classes. I have recently upped my experience by adding trail running and training for a 5k obstacle course race called the Warrior Dash in August. I prefer exercising outdoors!

I've been biking everywhere lately!

I usually always run outside (I can't stand being in a gym in the summer!), I'll also be going for more hikes . I've started to swim more often aswell, so maybe there is a triathlon in my future:)

I will leave my treadmill behind and start walking the paths of a nearby city park. I will also be taking my yoga mat outside into my backyard to practice and to meditate. I have planted a large garden this year so I can have fresh veggies all winter.  I will be doing a lot of weeding and eventually harvesting, which is good exercise and great for the enviroment.

I'm training for my first olympic triathlon coming up in August. The swimming is going really well but doing 5 km in an indoor pool is, (I can only imagine) different then open water. As the lakes warm you can bet I will be doing a lot more open water swims.

I've moved my biking outside for the summer.
