June Thrive Challenge

Inspired by the lifestyle changes recommended in Thrive and Thrive in 30, the Vega Community is here to keep you on track, share in your successes, and inspire even greater change to help you achieve optimal health.

June is Great Outdoors Month and we’re dedicating our Thrive Challenge to celebrating the benefits of outdoor exercise and the nearby landscapes by which we live!

With Summer weather moving in, why not take yoga practice to a park, a daily run to a nearby hiking trail or try a new type of outdoor cross training?

We challenge you to exercise outside and in doing so, relieve stress, increase energy and heighten your sense of wellbeing!

Now that the sun is up early I spend most mornings walking, jogging or biking through a lovely park and path that runs parallel to the Long Island Sound.  The sound of the birds are a welcome alarm system.  On tuesday evenings i walk with two friends who are battling cancer.  We watch the sun lowering and spend time looking at the beuty around Fort Totten ....the old battery and the water are quite different to appreciate the separateness of their own beauty.  We always feel reinvigorated.  The daily stress of work and concerns wash away!

For me, exercise NEEDS to be done outdoors.  The outdoors is awakening, thought-provoking, and peaceful, and I intend to continue outdoor exercise, and even explore more leisure venues of it via biking to work and school!

This month, I went for my first every open water swim.  It was so great and so much better than swimming back and forth in a pool.  I was lucky to be near a lake that is clean and kept that way.  But, I know that there are lakes out there that are not this way.  Swimming in the lake really made me appreciate how valuable our natural resources are.  Lots of people were enjoying the lake and I saw a lot of family's with picnics out by the lake.   Swimming in the lake was very rejuvinating, and enjoying a picnic afterwards with my family was very relaxing.  It made the whole day feel so much more alive than just sitting at home watching a movie.

This month, my husband and I are taking full advantage of the beautiful weather by doing our Saturday morning run together on the local trails and having our twin 5-year-old's ride their bikes alongside us!  And while we stretch, they get to burn even more energy on the playground! :)

Well I live in Germany (Stuttgart) with my boyfriend and we took 20 days off to go hiking and biking around Germany and France ( or where ever we feel like exploring). We spend a week in France (Ruoms) camping out and hiking with our dog Bruce (shih tzu mix). Different hikes each day. We plan to ride around Lake Constance and a couple other bike adventures and more hiking mostly locally. We are fortunate enough to have a good biking and hiking everywhere around us and just plan on being outside as much as possible.
On a side note. I just picked up the Thrive book again (after having it for years now) and have been trying out all the recipes!

Took my dad hiking which was hard enough to do bc he is not into that sort of thing.  We started strong but bc of his diabetes he had a hard time after about one mile. I really wanted him to make it to the summit so he could see how awesome and breath taking the view is of LA. We didn't make it bc he started cramping and then he threw up a few times.   Lucky for us there was a small tree with some shade that we ended up hanging out under and also took a nap eventually.  We talked about the mountains, the rolling grasses, the firm breeze cooling us from the 80+ degree day, religion, urban sprawl, the universe, and at that moment time stopped existing. The hike was more than I could have asked for and again like always nature was there to nurture.

I've moved to a new apartment which is right next to the Rideau Canal so I bought a second-hand bike this year and I have also started doing Nordic Walking with the poles - great workout for the upper arms. And this winter I skated to work at least once a week. I prefer to get my exercise outside no matter what the weather. The only thing I do indoors is yoga and qi gong (I'm too self-conscious to do that outside by myself - haha)

I'll be hitting up the local trails in Ottawa on my cyclo-cross bike as I prepare for another season of racing cyclo-cross in Europe. You can 't beat getting back to nature and feeling the energy of powerful legs and lungs on warm summer day.

Living in the Napa Valley is wonderful.  The weather is really nice almost all year long.  This allows outdoor exercise at any time.  I love hiking, walking my 2 Cairn Terriers, jogging and swimming.  I am hoping to get a road bike this year and start cycling by the beautiful vineyards with my husband!  I am also looking forward to the Vega Health Optimizer I just ordered to help me on my healthful journey.

I live in Ontario, Canada, so we enjoy doing anything outside when the weather allows. Actually, we exercise year round no matter how much snow. I do most of my exercises outside. I love to hike, jog, do the escarpment stairs, find any park bench to do dips and inverted pushups on and we always have our yoga mat w/ us. This month especially is nice to get up early, go for a jog and end up w/ doing yoga in the park. Afterwards, I enjoy a nice cup of coffee. To fuel me before my early morning jog, I fill up on a glass of Vega Health Optimizer to give me my nutrients and pep for the day.

I get out two to three times a week for a three mile run on a park trail near where I live. Typically I end the run with stretches on a picnic bench, but with the weather finally turning summer-like, I'm trying to incorporate some strengthening exercise at the end of the run. The park has a set of bars for pull-ups, etc and I've begun easy biceps and triceps push-ups on the bar following my run, when I'm warmed up. I've also started doing squats and lunges on the grass. This is so much fun! Much better than at the gym - I'm outside breathing in the fresh air and getting some vitamin D.

The summer has barely started and I've already put in miles and miles of hiking, biking, and just plain ole walking, along with swimming and disc golf!

I love getting outdoors and exercising, especially in the sunshine weather of summer.  I'll be spending time at the beach, surfing, swimming and running on the sand as well as hiking with friends.

I have started riding my bike to work (30miles round trip) instead of my truck to save gas/money, save the environment and save my heart!

I absolutly love working out in the sun, I help instruct and indoor/outdoor bootcamp in Southern California and I plan on taking my clients outdoors for new and fun exaercises that are more sports related. Play more cames, jump more hurdles.  I also plan on challenging them with outdoor running contests and having them post their routes for all to try, as well as take them on wilderness hikes.  Personally, I am going to run the Santa Monica Steps, and I always love my run from Will Rogers State beach to Venice and back.  But my new adventure will be swimming. Not a great swimmer, but I am going to get there, I will also be bringing my workouts to the pool... kettle bells in the pool etc.. Tough stuff! I love it!

We appreciate every second of nice weather in Nebraska!

I am going to run hills, do some high intensity interval running...swim instead of lay out at the pool...take the dog for walks...ride my bike a lot... and play in the sun with my grandkids every chance I get.

I'm going to work out with my hyperactive crazy Aussie (dog) by going for runs and bike rides early in the morning before the brutal heat hits.
