June Thrive Challenge

Inspired by the lifestyle changes recommended in Thrive and Thrive in 30, the Vega Community is here to keep you on track, share in your successes, and inspire even greater change to help you achieve optimal health.

June is Great Outdoors Month and we’re dedicating our Thrive Challenge to celebrating the benefits of outdoor exercise and the nearby landscapes by which we live!

With Summer weather moving in, why not take yoga practice to a park, a daily run to a nearby hiking trail or try a new type of outdoor cross training?

We challenge you to exercise outside and in doing so, relieve stress, increase energy and heighten your sense of wellbeing!

I love exercising outdoors. I try to go out in the morning before it gets too hot out. It's also a great start to my day to be outside in nature and getting the blood moving!

Shortly after I stopped smoking in 1971 at the age of 28 (I’m 68 for those of you who are weak in math), I began running outdoors because my new energy level was tremendous. I’ve been running outdoors in all kinds of weather ever since, enjoying the changing scenery as the seasons come and go. I’m retired now and running has provided the additional advantage of getting me out of the house for a while almost every day. On a day when I don’t run outdoors I just don’t feel right.

Cycling is my choice.

It has been over 100 degrees and humid as a sauna here for about two weeks . . . I love it, bring it on Mother Earth!  Water and Vega Sport . . . Necessities!

I love running outside.  It is so much more invigorating than running on the treadmill.  Even when it is cold, sometimes it just makes you feel alive to get out there and conquer the road.  I especially love running when it is warm though.  I do agree that with your mind being occupied by the beauty around you, you forget how far you have gone, and for me, I feel I can run farther.  I love looking up and seeing the trees before I see the blue expanse beyond them.  I love running through beautiful neighborhoods and looking at houses (especially since our business is real estate.) Hey, I can shop for great properties and run at the same time.  If I have my I-phone with me, I may call to check on a price with the owner.....And lastly, I love the fresh air.  You can't beat the smell of clean air, especially in Alabama.  I live in a small town so there is very little exhaust or city fumes to fight.  ;

I bought a bike so I can get outside and enjoy the days that remind me of my childhood!

Outdoor activity has often challenged me with new perspectives

and adaptations that I may never have experienced indoors.

I've started up swimming again, and will be out in the backyard swimming on a daily basis. Monday through Friday (and sometimes Saturday, if I really want to), I go for a run with my two dogs in the mornings. The morning workout really makes my day much better and I accomplish more whilst feeling good about myself. My dogs love getting out, too!

Being outside also enables me to get my necessary sun dose and up my vitamin D. I adore the sun.

Yesterday I ran in the rain and it was so refreshing.  The color of the leaves and the sound of water rushing along the side of the road made me feel like I was in an entirely new place.  My run turned into an expedition where anything could happen and there was no such thing as tired!

i call on my active friends who enjoy bicycling, hiking, running marathons, or the ultimate: participating in crazy-epic-fun races like the warrior dash, spartan race or the Mitsubishi city chase!

I dislike waking up early to exercise. I always think "who does that" and "why would anyone want to wake up at 4 to workout at 5?" But, I have to say I forced myself to for 3 days in a row. This is what I learned. I am the the kind of person that can roll right out of bed and have the energy for a tough morning workout. I love love love going to the track in the dark and 10 minutes later realizing that it's daylight. That I was part of the day beginnnig. I also like that I've started my day off with a sweaty and intense workout. It sets the mood and motion for the entire day. The first time I discovered an outdoor bootcamp, this is what it promoted: "we believe people are animals, not machines, and our workouts feel that way. we believe in getting outdoors, getting dirty, screaming, running, rolling, climbing, playing, and beating the s*** out of our bodies, then doing it all over again. we believe this is natural, necessary, and just more freaking fun than sitting, driving, treadmill, stair master, spin class, or leg extension machines." urban animal. austin,tx

Since then my workouts have been fueled by what my body can do outdoors.
I use more muscles with outdoor workouts, get more sun, and drink a whole lot more water. haha.
get out there!

I run outside, mostly on grassy/dirt trails, every day.  I love being outdoors and running, so it's the perfect combination.

When I train for half marathons, I have to train outside or my race will be slow and my body will not be ready for the rigours of the road.  I'm not the fastest runner but I love the feel of the breeze from the ocean when we do our Saturday group runs in Coconut Grove for TWV.  Being with a group of friends who are out there getting healthy (and helping kids in Haiti have clean drinking water!) is the best experience and I couldn't get that on a treadmill.

I'm running outside. Glad to get away from the treadmill (which is reserved for the nastiest, coldest or most dangerous weather, because it is NO FUN). It's a bit warm now, so I'm trying to stick to early in the morning before it gets too hot, but I am happy to have sun and warmth to bask in!

I run, and do so outside. I honestly don't let much get in my way, (except lightening)... rain, snow, heat, bring it on. I resorted to a treadmill briefly this winter when we had back to back blizzards and my exercise induced calm was missing. I know that all exercise has benefits, but the amazing feeling you get from being outside, listening to birds, water flowing etc, adds so much more than just the workout.

I run outside as often as possible.

I have a son with special needs who requires 24 hr monitoring, the only respite care comes from my husband when he's not working. Now that the days are longer I'm taking advantage of getting out the door before my husband goes to work.  I walk/run for about 3 miles, then when my husband gets home, I'm out the door for an evening swim in open water or outdoor pool, followed be either a run or bike ride. Weekend mornings are spent doing bricks. If my son is well I'll be doing a few sprint tri's this summer. Vega Sport Lemon/Lime, and the green sport bars are my workout staples. The drink gives me much needed energy following some sleepless nights. Getting outdoors in essential to my overall well being. I couldn't do it without VS, I tell folks it's my morning Java.  I'm a free walking advertisement, just ask my friends :)

There are so many great ways to appreciate our surroundings. I volunteer for the local hiking club packing bark mulch into the composting toilets. They usually post hikes or bicycle rides in the local newspaper or online. This year I purchased a kayak that has been taking me out on the waterways and a little back-water camping. Cycling continues to be a passion that has me riding solo and with friends. Soon I will be heading to Virginia for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy Convention for a weeks worth of hiking and other activities. Get involved, join a club, participate in an event. There are so many options to stay healthy during the summer.

I consider myself to be a "solar powered" person, so I always exercise outdoors. I walk my cattle dogs two hours per day and I mountain bike both Saturday and Sunday. I spend about an hour per day , in my backyard, pitching tennis balls to my manic mutts. I love living in such a temperate climate because there is never a reason not to be outdoors!
