Inspired by the lifestyle changes recommended in Thrive and
Thrive in 30, the Vega Community is here to keep you on track, share
in your successes, and inspire even greater change to help you achieve optimal health.

July is the month where we can finally expect full-fledged summer weather - and more than ever, summer time means smoothie time!

A smoothie is the perfect way to cool off and get quick nutrition. One of the Thrive guidelines is to drink a nutritious smoothie every day - to get your nutrients in a whole food, liquid form that is easy to digest.

Smoothies are also easier and quicker to prepare than most other complete meals.

Your challenge this month: Shake and blend your way to refreshment and nutrition with a different smoothie concoction every day this month!

What is your go-to smoothie recipe? Your favorite blend of ingredients? Narrow down your favorite few recipes and disclose them to the Vega Community! With smoothies, there is a lot of room for innovation and creativity, so don't be afraid to try something new!

How to participate: Share your ultimate smoothie recipe with the community by adding a comment below, or share your most unique recipe in a blog post.

Prize: A one month supply (two 15-serving bags) of Vega Smoothie Infusion to add nutritious goodness to your smoothies. Approximate retail value: $59.99

Contest closes: Entries must be received by July 31, 2010 at 11:59 PDT.

I have a new favorite smoothie to start my day with. It is very simple, with few ingredients, but tast none-the-less.

1/2 scoop of chocolate Vega WFHO
1/2 avocado
handful of fresh strawberries
1-ish cup(s) of chocolate Almond milk (Almond Breeze)

Again, not many ingredients, but tonnes of flavor. I had previously only had avocadoes in savory dishes, but it is a great addition to a smoothie. If less liquid is used this could definitely serve as a pudding-type desert.

I keep it simple and use banana, frozen berries and orange juice or rice milk. I know it's not vegan, but sometimes I add plain yogurt and honey too.

I am 63 and a triathlete, marathon runner and anything else that prevents me from rusting and the most important thing is that I'm a new/old dad of a 2 year old who's birthday is today. I have been drinking smoothies as long as I have been running and that's been over 30 years - I continually try out recipe after recipe but I always go back to this one since it does not taste like a dog's biscuit and keep me stoked as a meal replacement - Plus I like the fact that it's not nuclear and I can make it year round by varying the fruit so I never have to get bored. Now I can add Vega Smoothie Infusion which will add another dimension - so without any further delay here it is( drum roll inserted here )

Dynamite Drink

¼ Cup Sunflower Seeds
¼ Cup Sesame Seeds
¼ Cup Almonds
¼ Cup Rolled Oats
¼ Cup Carob Powder
¼ Cup Wheat Germ
¼ Oat Bran
½ Cup Non-Fat Dry Milk Powder
½ Cup Soy Powder (NOT FLOUR)

In a blender – grind seeds & store in refrigerator or freezer

To serve use ¼ cup of the mix to 1 cup of liquid

Variation ¼ cup of Dynamite Drink
1 banana
1 tsp molasses or honey
¼ tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp orange rind
1 cup ICE

I drink this mixed with Soy milk and a banana and just about any fruit that’s in season. Sometimes I take the Dynamite powder and include in other smoothie recipes.

I also include,

Protein Ginseng
Protein Bee Pollen
Protein Spirulina
Carbo, Wheat Germ
Protein, Brewers Yeast
Lecithin
Carbo, Wheatgrass

Here's my morning smoothie ritual:
-1 scoop of Vanilla Chai Vega Health Food Optimizer
-1 banana
-handful of blueberries (fresh or frozen)
-3 to 4 strawberries (fresh or frozen)
-1/3 cup unsweetened prune nectar
-tablespoon of flaxseed
-1/2 scoop of hemp protein
-handful of mixed leafy greens
-top up container with water (about 1.5 cups) and mix with an electric hand blender.
This makes enough for 2 smoothies ~ my husband and I each have one before we head off to work!

my favorite smoothie is i use my vitamix, little water, always a slice or two of fresh pineapple for the anti inflammatory properties, apple for vit c, etc. fresh berries when possible, next frozen, protein powder and a frozen banana for my ice cubes. I alter it when i have my wheatgrass growing i put two handfuls in, chlorophyll for increase in red blood cells, therefore more oxygen, etc.

Mix in a blender: 1 scoop of Chocolate Vega Protein Powder, 6 frozen strawberries halved, a tsp of flax seed, 1T honey (I know - not vegan, but it just works), 1/2 frozen banana sliced, 2c Silk almond milk. Blend. Tastes great! Option: substitute blueberries for strawberries or put them both in.

I've been making a smoothie that is inspired by Brendan's energy pudding. This is excellent as a pre-run snack on hot summer days!

.5 TBSP ground flaxseed
.5 TBSP coconut oil
1 TBSP carob powder
2 dates
.5 c vanilla soymilk
.25 c water
8 ice cubes

blend until smooth, pour into a tall glass, and enjoy. :)

My favorite smoothie consists of a handful of greens (I use whatever is in the fridge at the moment), 1 banana, flaxseed oil, blackstrap molasses, a healthy amount of cinnamon, and sometimes pure maple syrup. Delicious!

My kids have this smoothie for breakfast every morning and then I freeze any extra in popsicle molds for the ultimate in nutritious cool-down snacks! They call it their Smoothie Infusion Ice Cream because using the frozen fruit makes it thick enough for the straw to stand up in the middle of the cup! Who knew having "ice cream" for breakfast could be so nutritious!

1 cup rice milk
1-1/2 cups orange/mango or pineapple juice
1-2 frozen bananas
5-6 large frozen strawberries
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
2 scoops Vega Smoothie Infusion

Blend until smooth and enjoy!

My Pretend I'm in a nipa hut by the South China Seas concoction:
1 knuckle sized piece of ginger, peeled
a handful of fresh mint leaves from my garden
4 or 5 kalamansi (sort of like key limes), or 1 meyer lemon
1 spoonful of Chloressence
1.5 cups of sparkling mineral water (I like Gerolsteiner)
Blend until the fizz makes you happy
This smoothie is my fave way to beat the heat like we're having today in SW Ontario!
