July Thrive Challenge

Inspired by the lifestyle changes recommended in Thrive and Thrive in 30, the Vega Community is here to keep you on track, share in your successes, and inspire even greater change to help you achieve optimal health.

It’s already July and we’re not sure what the weather has been like for you lately, but here at Vega HQ – summer has only just arrived! Foul weather or not - our Vega Team soldiered on to take on the Tough Mudder course in Whistler, BC at the end of June.

What is Tough Mudder you ask? Probably the toughest event on the planet! Imagine 12 grueling miles of physically and mentally challenging obstacles to overcome like crawling in mud under barbed wire, slip and sliding under 10,000 volts of electricity, 12 foot Berlin walls to ascend, a sub-zero dip in a glacier lake followed by miles and miles of thigh high mud and bushwhacking fun!

To some this may sound like torture, and it kind of is. But in reality – it is a test of mental, physical and spiritual strength that only when experienced up close and personal – can reveal to you what you’re made of and propel you toward future achievements that may not have been possible before.

Your challenge this month:

Share with us a physical challenge you have pushed yourself to conquer that resulted in helping you gain the confidence to help power greater goals and possibilities.

How to enter: Post a comment below, or on Vega’s Facebook fanpage.

Last week, I hiked four mountains in the Adirondacks NY. All four summits were over 4000 feet high. I had never climbed mountains that high before. Thanks to the Vega Sport products and some good training and dedication, I was amazed to see how easily I could make my way up. Now, I definitly got addicted to it and I'm planning on climbing the 46 highest mountains in the Adirondacks.

I did a 3 hour yoga master class which incorporated 108 chaturungas into the class...[chaturungas are very similar to pushups] ... I hung in there and completed the whole class and all 108 chaturungas...I have surprised myself and also inspired myself to attend yoga classes on weekly basis, as opposed to almost annually prior to this... I'm feeling much better in various ways...[thrive in 30 is no doubt contributing to my new lease on life aswell...thanks Brendan :)

I just completed the Tough Mudder myself on July 7, 2012. It was an incredible challenge and fun. I have now decided to do it again next year and I now know exactly how to train and challenge myself even more.

Tough Mudder is impressive! A whole new level of endurance! My physical challenge has been to stay seated behind my desk to put the finishing touches on my first book (published by Chronicle Books)  - a women's project on running - title soon to be released. It's been more of a mental challenge than anything, but sitting on my bottom for hours on end is not easy, but the payoff is forever!

I decided to run my first half marathon a week before I was to do it. I had to take it easy and take more walk breaks than anticipated, and the blisters! The blisters! But I finished and now I'm planning to run another this fall.

I am currently training to win a 12 hour endurance run next month. Last year I did it with very little practice but with all my training efforts and dedication I'm hoping to place 1st. Last year the top female ran 60 miles in 12 and my goal is 65 miles.

Running has always been challenging for me, but I pushed myself to complete a few road races. At that time I was also working on a physics degree. While running I would think, if I can do this, I can definitely do my physics homework!

Accomplishing a head stand!!! :) I still get excited just thinking about this accomplishment!  I do the Ashtanga Yoga series and when ever it was time to go into headstand, i struggled and wobbled and never succeeded.  I was determined to get this pose down, so I practiced everyday until finally it felt comfortable and natural to lift those legs straight up in the air and over my head. Yay!!  Next pose in the making...Forearm Stand Split!

Hi everybody, I completed my first double marathon a few weeks ago. I used Vega products all the way. It got me through the hard work, sleep deprivation and kept me mentally alert. I did a pre-marathon try out a few weeks before my Big Day. I used other products that were given to me by sponsors. So let me tell you that I got sick (really sick!) and almost couldn't finish my run. Wiser this second time around, I stuck to my match plan, brought with me all my Vega products and man what a difference. Thank you Vega for all the wonderful products you make!

In May of this year, I ran my first marathon. Lots of people run marathons these days, but I guess it was an extra challenge for me because I have multiple sclerosis. Luckily I am still able to walk and run, but I had to pay careful attention to my energy levels during training, and take extra days off when I felt fatigued. About a month before the race, I developed IT band syndrome, so I ended up having to walk some of the race. But injury and chronic disease didn't stop me from finishing that marathon.

When I started training for the marathon, I had no idea if I would make it to the starting line, let alone finish the race. But I did finish, and I signed up for another marathon this fall. And now I'm starting to consider something really crazy: a 50-miler next year.

In April I ran in my first trail run race . . . 16.35 miles with 4,226 feet of elevation gain.  I trained with a few guys I work with, and we had a good time pushing each other and keeping each other focused on the goal.  This was the most physically challenging event I have been a part of, and it definitely opened up my realm of future possibilities.

A physical challege that I pushed myself through this month was entering in my high school cross country coach's weight training class. I was able to attend 100 percent of the classes held this month and deal with the outdoor weights in the hot Arizona sun at 110 degree temperatures. I felt very proud of my accomplishments every time the group of ladies that did this class because I am not physically as strong as most people. As the classes progressed though I felt myself become stronger physically and was able to lift heavier weights by the end of the session. I am so happy that I finished and also that I got to spend the summer with my old coach.

Running my very first half marathon was inconceivable back in the days for me. I was never the athletic type and the word 'gym' was not part of my vocabulary. I was in ROTC in high school and once a week we would run a mile with our class and I was their Flight Commander. I was so disappointed in myself, because I barely could run a mile without stopping to catch my breath. Everyone would pass me and I would always finish last. Talk about breaking your confidence. As a Flight Commander, I felt like I let my underclassmen down. Instead of trying to work at it, I naturally believed as was not a born runner and it just wasn't in my genetics.

Fast forward 5 years post high school, I decided that I wanted to knock off a few things off my bucket list. Skydiving was one and I did that. Running a half marathon was the second. It seemed impossible at the time, but I was determined. Something in me wanted to challmge myself and after reading a few self-help books and listening to inspiring speakers, I felt that I mentally had the strength. It was just the physical factor that need work.

Everyday during lunch at work I would run on the treadmill. What started at a slow pace increased as weeks went by. When I was tired I stopped to walk, but still kept going. Months flew by and I managed to mainaitain a steady pace without stopping until I finall was able to run a mile effortlessly.

Time, patience, and hard work were my focus. I signed up for shorter distance races to get a feel of a raace atmosphere and was hooked from there on. 5Ks, 10k, 15Ks and finally a half marathon in 2010. I completed the 'Triple Crown' in San Diego that year and it was the BIGGEST accomplishment to date.

Anything is possible if you put your mind to it. So true folks ! I'm still running races and now have a collection of medals to be proud of. My confidence skyrocketd from there and now have a love for racing. I won't stop as long as I still have my legs. Thanks to Vega as well for keeping me strong and well-nourished. It's good to be part of a community for vegan athletes and a great way to influence others as well.

In February 2012, I ran my first 100 mile trail race at the Rocky Raccoon in Texas. It was going to be a challenge under any circumstances but the race started in a tremendous thunderstorm! We had to slog through the rain & lightning, and then the mud for 100 miles.  Because of the weather, the race had the lowest finishing percentage ever, but I stuck it out and got my belt buckle! Nothing like pulling off that to give you some confidence that you can break down and tackle a project of any size!

This summer my husband (a marathon runner and cross country coach) suggested I do a trail running race series with him, I reluctantly agreed. I had never done anything like that and honestly I never thought I would. Well we have run the first 2 races so far and I surprised myself with the results. The first race I did in 54 minutes and the second in 52 minutes! My original goal was to beat an hour. This year I have run a 5k and this running series...I'm surprising myself every day with what I can do! I finished Thrive in 30 in May and I have been eating a vegan diet ever since...wow who would have thought!

On Dec. 3rd, I completed my first 50 mile race, the Northface Endurance Championship in San Francisco, California.  With over 10,000 feet to ascend overlooking the Pacific Ocean,  for someone trains in the streets of New York, it was quite a challenge, but one of the most impowering and transcendental experiences of my life running through the Red Wood trees...Even now when I am confronted by difficulties in my "real" life, I can close my eyes and imagine the finish line, 52.5 miles later.... Although I ran this race fueled by a vegetarian diet, this year I will do it again on a vegan, Thrive-inspired diet!
