January Thrive Challenge

Inspired by the lifestyle changes recommended in Thrive and Thrive in 30, the Vega Community is here to keep you on track, share in your successes, and inspire even greater change to help you achieve optimal health.

Come year-end, many of us reflect on the 12 months past and set resolutions for the New Year. But too often, these resolutions are more like ‘ideas,’ bursting with intention, but seriously lacking action. Could New Year’s Resolutions be losing their edge?

Though regular goal-setting and evaluation are encouraged, there is just something about the clean slate of a new year that continues to inspire us. Team Vega hopes to see the community grab hold of this new beginning to propel your goals throughout the year!

We challenge you to set a well thought out goal that has real meaning in your life. Big goals are manageable if we break them down into smaller steps – and we naturally advance along our path of betterment, regardless of whether or not we conquer them.

Your challenge this month: Our community is a place for exchanging ideas and encouraging others – so where better to reveal your goals for the New Year? Reveal one goal for 2011, along with your action steps to achieve it.

How to participate: Post a comment below, or write a blog post, titled “January Thrive Challenge 2011.”

Prize: A $100 eStore gift certificate to further your goals for the New Year!

Contest closes: Entries must be received by January 31st, 2011 at 11:59 p.m.  PST

Winner: Congratulations to Seth, winner of our January Thrive Challenge!

I want to quit coffee so bad.  Every time I quit it I end up back at it.  It is truly an addiction for me that I find difficult to live without.  It may not seem like a big thing to others but to me it's like crack.  I am only just learning of the negative effects it has been working on my body.

My goal for 2011 is to run a 10k.  I have been running for almost two years, and this is the year that I want to become better, and faster.  To do this I have purchased the Thrive book for athelets.  I plan to follow everything that is stated in the book.  I already eat raw and vegan, now I just need to know what to eat and when.  Especially after my workouts.  I am looking forward to an awesome 2011!!

My goal for 2011 is to manage my stress levels and improve my overall health.  To do this I am doing the following:

-Yoga at lease once a week

-In bed by 10 p.m. every night

-Cardio at least 3 mornings a week, with Vega Sport (contains rhodiola which helps with stress)

-Up at 5 a.m. so I can be at work early and get more done

-Green smoothies with vega protein powder at least 3 mornings a week, to feel better and have more energy and nutrients in my day!

i plan to run a marathon in every state & d.c. within 1 year (52 weeks) to raise money & awareness for first descents (www.firstdescents.org)

i have been meeting with a local trainer who donated her time.

i also meet with a nutritionist & chiropractor who donate their time.

(if you know anything about phase angle - in 1 month, i went from 6.0 to 7.0)

i talked with some local companies who allowed me to have a silent auction to begin my fundraising for both the organization & my expenses.

i'm hoping to become an ambassador for vega @ some point this year because his products are a big part of my recovery when i don't have time (which i won't) to mix my own recovery drinks.  i also follow some of the recipes from his book(s) for my meals.

there are many more companies & people who have helped so far.

i'm looking forward to my first race in about 2 weeks (jan 30th) in georgia (i just miss brendan's tour ).

hope all be wonderful

elysa :)

I'm currently participating in a 40-day challenge at my local yoga studio. Having practiced yoga for over ten years on a weekly basis, my goal in 2011 is to increase my practice to three classes a week. Though I've been vegan for fourteen years, only in the last couple of weeks have I started using the Vega Whole Food Optimizer. I am amazed by how nourished and energized I have been feeling. My daily dose of WFO propels me forward as I strive towards this new yoga goal!

Last year I lost about 70 pounds total, dropping from about 230 to 160lbs, quit smoking as well. This year my goals are to be completely vegan, started about 2 months ago. Reach my goal of being 150- 155 lbs. Have way more muscle defination. Train for and fight in a NAGA tournament and win by a triangle choke haha. I'm spending this year repairing the damage I've done to my body the last 3 years of smoking, bad eating habits and lack of exercise. One more goal for '11 is to get another tattoo when my physical goals are met. Good luck to everyone else as well!

My goal for 2011 is to run a 1:30 half marathon, as well as run another 1000 km by end of year (which I was able to accomplish in 2010). I also want to clean up my eating habits and stop giving into cravings, which should help me to loose the extra 10 lbs I'm carrying around.

One goal of mine for 2011 is to drastically reduce the amount of animal products I consume. My action steps to achieve this include getting in better shape (wouldn't want to pollute my lean physique ;), and setting weekly menus to help curb impulse eating. Yay me!

My ultimate goal is to run around the block 3 times by December 31st 2011.  The rest of the year my goal is very simple, after getting in remission from Lupus I now have the energy to actually do something and I'm starting with Yoga and Walking because I have no flexibility yet (from the rheumatoid arthritis) or good breathing (from pleurisy).  I'm sure one day I will be able to run again, but for now I'm starting slow and smart and looking forward to the future AND hoping to loose the 10 lbs I gained over the holidays from all my vegan cookies and cupcakes!!!

My fitness goal for 2011 is to be able to run a 10K in the fall with EASE - no pain, just fun and fit. My overall theme for the year is Flexi & Sexy, building a flexible foundation for the next 60 years (just turned 40)! So eating healing foods is essential, not only for my body, but keeping my mind (read hormones) balanced. That keeps everyone around me sane :)

I have 3 goals for this year. My top goal is Personal Development. To achieve this goal I plan to follow/am following Jim Rohn One Year Success Plan, each week involves various exercises over the course of 52 weeks.

My goal for 2011 is to do my first NYC Marathon, I have been into running and fitness for about 5 years now, and Vegan for 4 years.  I have said in the past I will do NYC, but never registered for the lottery, so in Nov 2010 I put myself in the lottery for 2011.  If I am choosen in the lottery or not I plan to run for a charity, the North Shore Animal League, the largest no kill shelter in the world.  My goal time for the marathon is sub 3 hours, and I know I can reach this with a lot of hard work.  I also hope that in doing this it will show a lot of people, that you don't have to eat meat to do well in athletics, proof that a plant based diet can help you achieve anything in life, so I hope to have a great finishing time and inspire others.  Here is my plan to achieve this goal:

  •  Run on weekly basis, gradually increasing my mileage and speed each week, using hill, interval, speed, and weekly long runs.  As well as using 5K, 10K, and half marathon races to improve my times and get a more true feel of my progress.
  • Cross training using weight lifting, biking, swimming, qigong, and yoga, to strengthen my muscles and core strength, which will assist in my running.
  • Use Vega products, especially the Sport Optimizer, to help with my energy for workouts/runs and cardio.  Also using the Health Optimizer for overall nutrition, including proteins.

I feel that by following the above steps I will be able to reach my goal and conquer the NYC Marathon in Nov 2011.

I am going more vegan but it is difficult with my farmer husband liking his meat. I have just read the china study which was really eye opening.

I am a father with a wife and three daughters.  My goal is to provide the best possible environment for my daughters to grow up in from a diet and nutrition standpoint (and many other important areas too).  Secondarily, I want my daughters to understand the benefits of the nutrition they gain in this family and feel comfortable that they won't grow up and 'lower the bar' on their nutrition.  This has always been my goal; however, at the end of 2009 we went vegan as a family after having read The China Study, Eating Animals and Fast Food Nation.  Now, I've just recently read the 2nd Thrive book and Preventing and Reversing Heart Disease.  Somewhere in between these last two mentioned books is where I'm sure I can find the perfect sweet spot for our family's nutrition.  Thus, by following a hybrid of Thrive and Preventing and Reversing Heart Disease I will make sure my family is in the best possible situation I can put them in.  I've got my wife reading these two books now and I think my oldest daughter is old enough to read Thrive.

Once I've had others in the family read the same material I have it's a simple matter of incorporating the recipes from both books into our daily lives.  We already utilize mostly plant based foods; however, this year I'd like to eliminate any food that does not fit well with the ideas in these two books.  I know my family is on board and now that we know we are finally armed with the best information, I'm hoping my goal is in reach.  We have come along way as a family in learning what is good nutrition and I am relieved that we don't eat the way we did just two short years ago.

A few months ago I started attending yoga classes twice a week at my gym. My body has welcomed the challenge of the poses, and I now really look forward to those structured yoga sessions. Unfortunately, aklthough the gym offers several other yoga classes per week, none of these are at a time that I can reasonably attend.

Therefore, my goal for this new year is to establish my own yoga practice at home in the evenings after I return home from work, starting with only 20 minute sessions, and gradually (hopefully!) progressing to longer sessions and/or more intense asanas.

Wish me luck!

As a fitness professional that works long hours and prepares a different diet for my family I have, and more convenient vegan food items have come available, I've allowed my diet to rely more and more on convenient to pick up, or prepare, food items. I used eat an extremely clean, 'whole foods', vegan diet. That diet enabled me to control SLE, chronic kidney disease and my weight, while being extremely active and to feel light, energetic and clear headed. The gradual alterations in my diet allowed this to change slowly until I reached a point where I no longer handle stress well; suffer chronic overtraining (resulting in injuries that take increasing longer to heal); have gained a great deal of weight; am mentally slower and increasingly forgetful; and kidney function has diminished.

I began making changes around Christmas, when I had time off, so I'm not sure this qualifies as a New Years' resolution (which I don't buy into, as I believe one should make changes for the better as soon as it's recognized as being needed). Regardless, I've made some changes that had an immediate impact and I plan to continue. I plan to maintain the following actions:

  • eliminate most caffeine (limiting my caffeinated beverages to an average of 1 green tea per day, if at any)
  • limiting my only intake of white rice, vegan sushi, to once a week at the most (it is the only vegan food I have available to me after 4 pm near work when I've forgotten to bring enough to eat on extra long/challenging days)
  • increase consumption of fruit in the winter (not an issue any other season)
  • **Drink at least 6 glasses of water each day (I hate it so am drinking dangerously little, resulting in chronic dehydration, so I'm tracking my intake now.)

I feel so much better already (after getting over caffeine withdrawal). I notice too that my compulsion to eat steadily at night has dropped off.
