January Thrive Challenge

Inspired by the lifestyle changes recommended in Thrive and Thrive in 30, the Vega Community is here to keep you on track, share in your successes, and inspire even greater change to help you achieve optimal health.

Come year-end, many of us reflect on the 12 months past and set resolutions for the New Year. But too often, these resolutions are more like ‘ideas,’ bursting with intention, but seriously lacking action. Could New Year’s Resolutions be losing their edge?

Though regular goal-setting and evaluation are encouraged, there is just something about the clean slate of a new year that continues to inspire us. Team Vega hopes to see the community grab hold of this new beginning to propel your goals throughout the year!

We challenge you to set a well thought out goal that has real meaning in your life. Big goals are manageable if we break them down into smaller steps – and we naturally advance along our path of betterment, regardless of whether or not we conquer them.

Your challenge this month: Our community is a place for exchanging ideas and encouraging others – so where better to reveal your goals for the New Year? Reveal one goal for 2011, along with your action steps to achieve it.

How to participate: Post a comment below, or write a blog post, titled “January Thrive Challenge 2011.”

Prize: A $100 eStore gift certificate to further your goals for the New Year!

Contest closes: Entries must be received by January 31st, 2011 at 11:59 p.m.  PST

Winner: Congratulations to Seth, winner of our January Thrive Challenge!

“January Thrive Challenge 2011.” I am a personal trainer and a yoga and pilates instructor. I also compete in Figure Competitions and run 1/2 marathons. I went vegan in 2010 for 4 months and felt better than I had every felt, physicaly and mentaly....but I was including too many fats and grains and gained weight.  I paniced and went back to my regular diet of high prtotien (animal products) and low carbs. My Goal for 2011 is...... I want that feeling back and inturn I want to teach as many people about the health benifits of begin vegan.  I have done a lot of studying and I am ready to wholly commit to being vegan for the rest of my life.  I am journaling everyday what I eat, exercise, and emotions. I also beleive meditation is important...this is hard for me.  But, I have resolved to start with 5 mins. per day and slowly increase my time each month.   I have started a weekly nutrition class at my gym with the whole emphisis on teaching people about food and what it does to their bodies.  I will teach them how to combine their foods so they get proper nutrition and the differents between alkiline and nonalkiline foods.  I will also require the class to journal so the can become intouch with their emotions as weel as see how  the foods they eat relates to how they look and feel.  I will tell them about Vega Commumity and get them involved with others that share the same lifestyle.  My last goal is to get 8 hours of sleep.  I have started by going to bed one hour earlier each night.  I have noticed a big difference in my ability to think sharper.  Next month I will  and will add another hour.

My goal for 2011..

Break the cycle for my children. All the unhealthy eating comes from the home. We cant expect (i should say, "I cant expect". I shouldn't speak for others.) My kids to eat wholesome good food, that is literally medicine for our bodies, if i do not.

I have a horrible metabolic disorder, that makes it impossible for me to get my body "in shape" but that does not stop me, to keep my inside as fit, and pure, healthy, and clean as possible. Ive lost 70 pounds since Ive stopped nursing my baby in July. And since 2011 started, my whole family is eating no process foods, and we don't eat out anymore (unless its at a vegan joint) and now both my kids LOVE my raw juices of kale, broccoli, spinach, beets, elephant garlic, celery, and cucumbers! I THINK the cycle is broke here!!!!

My goal was to participate in the Thrive for January but I had issues with signing up....Finally after try after try I got the pro's involved and I began the process yesterday.  My goal for the year.... Well I turn 44 tomorrow and I am going to lose the last remaining 10 Lbs by my 45 birthday. I have lost over 50 pounds over the last few years but the last 10 refuses to budge.  I do cardio 3x per week and a strength circuit twice per week, I use a rebounder for 25-45 mins at least 3x each week and I am an active living individual.   I play golf often in the summer and we have snowmobiles (which are alot more exercise than you'd beleive...at least how we ride). I drink plenty of water, I use VEGA products for my nutrition and I am working on switching to a totally vegan diet.  I, just 2 days ago found out about a mini triathlon  near my home which I'd like to enter but I don't swim well, so I'm looking into other 'races' that I might do better in.  There is tons of disease in my family- all of which I'm trying to avoid--cancer, diabetes, heart disease, obesity....I'm doing what I can to aid the healing of my body and give it the right stuff to work with to be the healthiest , fittest me I can be.

My big goal for 2011 is to finish my PhD in cancer epidemiology.  I'm in the final stages, and the goal is in sight!  As a big graduation present, my second goal for 2011 is to travel back to India with my family so we can continue our study of ashtanga yoga.   My third goal is to strive for at least 8 hours of sleep a night (no easy feat being a mom, full time researcher, and full time student!).

My resolutions for the year 2011 include to be as "obviously" fit as possible so that others will see how optimally beneficial a high-nutrient, plant-based diet is for the human body just by looking at me.  As a woman and a vegan, I face a lot of preconceived notions about the possibility of putting muscle on my tall, thin frame.  But, I am weight training, doing lots of HIIT cardio and playing tennis in this endeavor and I am seeing my six-pack emerge from my mid section and I am seeing definition in my legs and arms that I never had before.  Oh, and I'm using Vega protein powder! The chocolate flavor, yum!

I plan to train for and complete my first dualthon (I'm also going to practice swimming when spring rolls around). I'm already signed up for a 12k race in Canmore for May :)

I have been really lax with my children and give in to them wanting lots of processed pre-packaged snacks.  My goal is to clean out the pantry and put more thought into what goes back in there.  I bought Thrive and Shake and Go mixes and plan on making healthy (non-processed) treats and green smoothies.  I am trying really hard to look for healthy homemade recipes.

I have been using WHO and smoothie infusion for a while now, incorporating them into my regular eating plan, but I finally bought Thrive and am committed to cleansing my body to reduce my stress, irritability, and slow recovery times.  I will use the principles in Thrive to help fuel my body through high quality nutrients.  My biggest challenge will be giving up my caffeinne addiction - I plan on gradually decreasing my consumption by 1 cup a day each month for the next 4 months choosing green tea or herbal teas to help with my craving for hot beverages.  I will use this improved health in my personal life to set a PR in 1/2 Marathon by the end of the year - in my family life to be more calm and less irritated when my children challenge me - and in my professional life to bring more focus and organization to my time.

My goal for 2011 is Canidate for Master of Sport in Kettlebell Long Cycle - 78 reps in ten minutes with two 24 kgs bells at a body weight below 73 kg.  Eat clean and live strong.

My goal this year is to compete in two Figure competitions and place top five by eating vegetarian/vegan. I will continue to have the Vega Sport optimizer before my workouts, and vega shakes with spinach and berries after my workouts to assist my body's recovery. I will continue to make and devour new delicious recipes from the Thrive Diet book. My favorite's are the veggie pizza's and the almond flaxseed burgers. Large spinach salads are a must with fresh fruit and quinoa for energy.

Have Vega or Green Smoothie everyday.  Large salad and figure out was type of protein is good for me.  Get back on the exercise wagon - I was doing P90X everyday but somehow lost the energy to do it.

I don't choose New Year's resolutions or goals, but rather a theme to follow for the year. This year my themes are calmness and laughter.  I have a lot of positive changes going on in my life, both career and personally, so my goal is to take it all in stride and remain calm about it. A weekly yoga class, daily deep breathing, not sweating the small things and asking for help will help to bring about calmness in my endeavours.  And laughter, well if we don't have fun while doing things, than what's the point - besides laughter is good for boosting your mood and combating stress.

My goals for 2011 are to be in the best HEALTH ever (not shape, but hopefully that will be icing on the cake).  So far so good, but my plan includes:

- Yoga at least once a week (Moksha)

-Green smoothies for breakfast every morning

- One BIG salad a day full of colourful veggies and veggie protein (nuts, seeds, etc)

- 2-3 cross fit sessions a week (running a mile for time prior to each workout)

- 1-2 runs a week (5 km or more).

My goals for 2011: Go back to being Vegan, run two more Half Marathons, and my FIRST FULL Marathon: The DC Marine Corps Marathon, and do Yoga regularly three times a week. I plan on becoming a Yoga Instructor this year as well, in the fall.

My goals for 2011 are pretty simple but I think they'll have big payoffs: get more sleep and up my greens intake. This *should* reduce my stress, help my body recharge and boost my nutrition.
