share. learn. thrive!
Inspired by the lifestyle changes recommended in Thrive and Thrive in 30, the Vega Community is here to keep you on track, share in your successes, and inspire even greater change to help you achieve optimal health.
We all need that special someone when the going gets tough. That is why it’s great to work out and exercise with a training buddy. For some people, it’s a running partner joining in on those early-morning, long-distance runs, helping you prepare for that marathon you said you’d finally do this year. For other people, that training buddy is a personal trainer, someone who is a professional at identifying dormant potential and trained to spark that fire inside by pushing you to pass the limits you set for yourself.
Or maybe that training buddy is a 3 month old baby, giggling and wiggling their little legs on the yoga mat next to a new Mom who is striving to get her flexibility and figure back. And maybe it’s a four-legged best friend, the ONLY friend that is ready before you, waiting at the door and willing to brave the coldest winds, rain, sleet and snow, just to spend a half-hour by your side.
Your Thrive Challenge this month: Share your story about your training buddy. Who are they and how they inspire you and keep you motivated to push your limits—or just plain keep you company!
How to enter: Post a comment below, or on Vega’s Facebook fanpage.
Prize: 2 tubs of Vega Pre-workout Energizer—one for you, and one for your *training-buddy. Approximate retail value: $99.98. (*Vega Pre-workout Energizer is an adult beverage and should not be given to babies or dogs.)
Contest closes: Entries must be received by Feb 29th, 2012 at 11:59 pm PDT.

Comment by Samantha Wiles on February 4, 2012 at 9:20am Funny story - in the morning after I wake up I do yoga in my living room to a dvd. My workout buddy for this activity is my cat Sacha. How can a cat be a workout buddy you might wonder. Well while I do my yoga she sits next to my mat, sometimes just sitting and sometimes playing and running around, sometimes in front of the tv pawing at words that move on the screen while the dvd plays. It's quite a funny sight. In the mornings when I hit the snooze button and am unmotivated to crawl out of bed and on to my mat, Sacha is eager to wake me up and remind me that it's time to wake up, stop being lazy, pay attention to her and do some yoga.
Comment by Deb Rondeau on February 3, 2012 at 9:39pm My training buddy is my personal trainer Martin. I met him while I was wandering around a local gym called "The Garage". It was my first time at a gym (at 56 years of age) and I was totally lost, especially among all those big bruiser weight-lifter types. He asked if I needed help and I've been working out with him since that day almost 2 years ago. In that time I have lost an additional 75 lb. and have become toned and fit. Martin even has me boxing now. I am forever grateful for my training buddy! And thank you for the part Vega products play in my new lifestyle. My favourites are the Vega endurance bar, which I enjoy after my workouts and Vega EFA oil, which I use on salads and in recipes I find on the Vega website.
Comment by mary a. on February 3, 2012 at 5:31pm My three sons are my training buddies. I told them I wanted to get in shape (lose 80 pounds) and maybe even run a half marathon before year's end, so they joined a gym with me and continually push me harder and harder in my workouts. They also run with me and even though I am nowhere near the half marathon yet, I feel that with their help I just might accomplish it, even if it is not this year.
**Side note** Amber Callahan, that is terrible about the hit and run that you and your dog had to endure. I am happy that you both are ok.
Comment by Judy Green on February 3, 2012 at 5:18pm Nici and I became friends when she became my mom's caregiver. Nici quickly became interested in how I eat vegan, and exercise to keep healthy. She now joins me at the track, turning a work-out into a fun-out! I run circles around her at the track, but with every pass, she has a smile for me and a word of encouragement. Nici is just learning to be healthy - and since I am her example, she inspires me to be my very best!
Comment by Mary Jane Button-Harrison on February 3, 2012 at 3:30pm I started an exercise program at the local martial arts center a little over a year ago. Another woman and I decided that we should exchange phone and email contact so we could check up on each other if we didn't see the other one in class. That accountability and commitment has helped both of us through the past year. We are both still at it!

Comment by Danielle Andolina on February 3, 2012 at 1:27pm I do a lot of running alone. But on the weekends I am fortunate enough to have my husband as my running partner. On rainy, dreary, energy-less days that I don't want to move--he gets me out the door. When I want to cut the run short, he reminds me that I can do it. And after a run when I just want to indulge, he gets me on track with a smoothie. It's nice to run alone, but also great to have a buddy every so often.
Comment by Jesse Wolfe on February 3, 2012 at 1:02pm For a while I always preferred to run/exercise by myself. I used it as a way to gather my thoughts and relax after work/class what have you. Then my friend called me up and asked to start working out with him. It was amazing. He knew TRX, I had moves from running track and doing triple jump. We were able to push each other and work our bodies in ways they hadn't been worked in years. Now, if I don't "feel like it" one day or I'm lazy- it helps to know someone is expecting me to be at the gym. Nothing like a little motivation!!
Comment by Kathy Manizza on February 3, 2012 at 12:14pm I have friends that I run with on a regular basis, but the buddy that gets me out every day, rain/shine/sleet or snow is my rescued pitbull, "Maui the superdog". After the Michael Vick bust, I visited Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab Utah. I volunteered for a week, and specifically with some of the former Vick dogs and other pitbulls, many of which had suffered through terrible abuse and were now being rehabilitated to be wonderful pets. Maui was only 9 months old, and although we don't really know what his life was like before arriving at Best Friends, we could tell right away that he wanted a home and person all his own. He flew all the way to CT to live with us, and settled into our daily running routine quickly. He has done races (canicross... where the dog wears a harness and pulls, giving a little assist to the human runner) from 2 miles to 10 miles. He loves it, and wiggles all over when I pull his harness off the hook. He's gotten me, his 54 year old "mom" back down to a sub 7 min mile pace at races, but he happily jogs along at 10 min pace on many of our long runs. He's never late, never complains, and has only had to miss 1 run (sore paws)in the past 9 months. For anyone interested in animal rescue, and a great experience, I highly recommend "Best Friends".... they even have a vegan cafeteria for all you can eat, $5 lunches!

Comment by MaeMae on February 3, 2012 at 10:31am I try to find as many workout and nutrition buddies as I can -- coworkers, classmates, neighbors, friends, family, even this community. If anyone wants to work out, I'll try my best to keep up with them! Right now, my closest workout buddies is my boyfriend who I like to go jogging with after work during the week and longer cycling rides on the weekends. He teaches me about form and technique, while I research nutrition and make awesome pre and post work out green smoothies for us.
Comment by Kelly Duncan on February 3, 2012 at 8:12am I literally ran into my workout buddy in October 2007 right before my second half marathon. It was 5:30am, my music was on & my eyes were focused on the pavement in front of me when she came flying around a corner...she was doing speed work which I had never tried. We laughed & then I noticed she was trying to talk to me. I took my ear buds out & she repeated herself, "Do you mind if I finish my run with you? I turn off a few blocks from here." I told her sure, but I'm not used to running with someone and talking. Thankfully she did most of the talking & told me she runs before work every morning (as do I) and if I was interested in running together to email her. She told me her email address right before she turned onto her street. I finished the last 1.5 miles on my own & didn't think much of it. Two weeks later the Detroit half marathon came & went & I was sitting at work thinking of her. I just so happened to remember her email address & touched base with her to find out how her race went & to see when she was running next. We decided to run at 5am the next morning, she gave me her address and said, "The door will be unlocked, just come in"! I felt a bit nervous, but I did it. We have been running together ever since! Her & her husband have run many marathons, have qualified for Boston & continue to run...he's in his early 60's & she's in her mid 50's. We trained for & completed our first & second triathlon's together & she has given me the confidence to train for & complete a full marathon of my own. She has become more than just my running buddy; she is like my family. We celebrate holidays together, always starting with a morning run, and have been each others support during injuries and personal tribulations. It's amazing how fast you can become close to someone when you are alone on the road with them before the sun rises through the elements of the four different seasons.
Comment by Tami Jo Eaton on February 3, 2012 at 7:25am I have lots of excuses for not working out, I am a full-time working mom of 3 children. Lots of running the kids around and then when I get home, dinner, laundry, cleaning and homework. I am lucky enough to have a gym at my work. My buddy doesn't work out with me, we work in the same office and can't leave the phones at the same time. She will use her lunch to go to the gym and then I feel guilty if I don't use my lunch to go to the gym. We talk each other into going. We both feel great afterward, but sometimes it is hard to get us there.
Comment by Marina Azbel on February 3, 2012 at 7:09am My training buddy is my personal trainer Mike. He is so different from any other trainer I've met. Our workouts are never the same, his creativity is amazing! When he left my gym a year ago I followed him because i couldn't imagine anyone else who would push me to my limits but also support and encourage me. Mike also helps me with my nutrition and makes sure I get enough protein and other nutrients to meet my goal of building lean muscles. He is funny, compassionate but also very professional. I'm looking forward to our sessions even though I know I'll be soaked with sweat and would be hardly moving after leaving the gym. I think I'm in the best form of my life now but I have to meet my goals for 2012 and Mike will support me in every way he can!
Comment by Emily on February 3, 2012 at 5:31am I used to have GREAT running buddies, never would have finished the two marathons without their support. I've been my own workout buddy past few years, biking to work, creating swimming workouts, and walking lots. Now my husband has become a good workout buddy helping me add a weight lifting routine to my workout. AND now with my teenage son training for boxing and working out regularly he inspires me to keep it up!
Comment by Brianna Goodwin on February 3, 2012 at 5:07am My training buddy is someone who I met through my Marathon Strides Against MS Team. Here name is Sam. Other than training for the marathon together, we also inspire each other to push ourselves even further! We both joined a crossfit gym and signed up for the New England Tough Mudder race. Not only is she a great training buddy but she also uses Vega Sport products! She isn't vegan so I was surprised that she knew about them at first but she says she loves the products because they help her prepare, sustain & recover without upsetting her stomach. :-)
Comment by Heather J on February 3, 2012 at 12:48am My training buddy is my friend Jessica, we agree to do a race a month (sometimes 2). She motivates me by always being far ahead of me so I know I have to try harder or she wont want to carpool to the events anymore. Plus she is always doing fitness stuff so its a good reminder to get my butt in gear.

Comment by Michelle Mcburney on February 2, 2012 at 8:44pm Living country, I have not been able to get anyone to run with me. My kids ride their bikes alongside on long runs. They carry the water, loo paper, and smiles.
Comment by caren engle on February 2, 2012 at 7:57pm My husband and I inspire each other to run and do P90X. After our workout we enjoy the Vega recovery drink which helps us recover and get ready to face the next days workout. I have the whole foods optimizer every morning with a banana and berries. I feel better at 50 then I did in my 30. Thanks Brendan and Kent.
