Inspired by the lifestyle changes recommended in Thrive and Thrive in 30, the Vega Community is here to keep you on track, share in your successes, and inspire even greater change to help you achieve optimal health. |
Many of us have a workout routine or train regularly, and only believe we’re exercising if it involves a pair of sneakers. But there are, in fact, countless ways to keep fit without ever lifting weights and with a lot less effort.
Now that summer is in full swing, we can live an active lifestyle without discouraging weather conditions; so pick up your pace, take the stairs or run for a cause! We challenge you this month, to share what you’re doing to get fit without trying.

Comment by Meredith on August 5, 2011 at 4:51pm I have 2 things I am doing this summer in addition to my regular exercise routine to get fit without trying:
1) I have been riding bikes with my kids when we go to do errands or other stuff during the day. If we are going to the store for school supplies, shopping for groceries, going out to lunch, etc., we have been taking our bikes instead of the car. Not only good for the environment but good for our bodies as well.
2) My husband & I have been taking nightly walks after dinner - typically 2 to 4 miles. We get to catch up on the day's events, plan future family events & activities, generally just have conversation without the kids around... and get some exercise at the same time.
Comment by Lange Soo on August 5, 2011 at 4:13pm I adopted a new puppy! I also got a new job. The new puppy helps in running around playing...running up and down the beach and paddling on a surfboard (he LOVES the water), or at least going on daily walks on days I'm too pooped to do anything else. The new job is great on my abs and arms...I take pictures of dolphins for photo-identification and cataloging of the local population of bottlenose dolphins. Holding up an slr camera with a huge zoom lens while trying to balance on a boat is a great for toning the whole body!

Comment by Mike Eves on August 5, 2011 at 9:33am I have two teenage boys and we do things like handstands / walking on our hands for fun all the time. Such a great exercise and we have a laugh seeing who can keep up the longest or walk the furthest. Keeps you young too! I'd rather my kids be embarrassed with me doing handstands all the time rather than looking bloated and not being able to move properly!

For me, "busting a move" is one of the most enjoyable ways to bust lbs and stress. I love to dance but I almost never make time to actually do it. When I was working in Nicaragua I was able to go to some fiestas where I would dance for hours, literally, on very warm summer evenings. With the salsa and reggaeton music I didn't have to move, I wanted to! And I think I was definitely using some muscles my regular weightlifting doesn't quite hit! I've missed it a lot so with much anticipation I am going to bring dancing back into my life, starting this Saturday night! Que bueno, thanks!
