August Thrive Challenge

Inspired by the lifestyle changes recommended in Thrive and Thrive in 30, the Vega Community is here to keep you on track, share in your successes, and inspire even greater change to help you achieve optimal health.

Many of us have a workout routine or train regularly, and only believe we’re exercising if it involves a pair of sneakers. But there are, in fact, countless ways to keep fit without ever lifting weights and with a lot less effort.

Now that summer is in full swing, we can live an active lifestyle without discouraging weather conditions; so pick up your pace, take the stairs or run for a cause! We challenge you this month, to share what you’re doing to get fit without trying.

I've started biking to the train station and to do local errands like going to the library, farmer's market, etc. I'm also continuing with rock climbing, running and yoga.

In this beautiful summertime weather, I have rediscovered the benefits of biking. I bike now to do errands of going to the bank, the store, yoga class, the gym and farmer's market. I fit in the bike ride anytime I can. I love to use my own human energy (not to mention burn the calories) and not any fossil fuel. I get exercise while being productive in getting errands done. I have been feeling amazing doing it. And now I am waiting for my Xtracycle extension for my bike. It extends my bike and allows me to carry up to 200 lbs on the back!! My brother turned me onto it. I will be able to carry loads of groceries as well as my yoga mat all in one trip.

I live right off a main road in my town and will always walk to wherever I need to go (library, dry cleaners, a resturant, etc). Good for the environment and good for my health!

I'm a vegan rock climber and am looking to increase my climbing level. Now that its summer I'm trying to get outdoors and climb more but I'm also increasing my training by pledging to climb 3 times a week instead of 2 and increasing my workout sessions from an average of one hour to two hours. I'm also adding some weight workouts to my typical climbing routine. And of course I end every training sessions with Vega health optimizer so i'm sure to get the protein I need to rebuild those muscles!

I gave away my car a few years ago; instead I walk, bike, or take the bus to work, play, shop, etc.

Now that the weather is nice, I take walks at lunch. I usually take the stairs instead of elevators or walk up the escalator. I also walk just about everywhere I need to go.

I have a desk job as well so I try to lift weights and do 30 min of cardio at least 3 days a week after work. But now that it's sunny, I sometimes go to the pool for a swim instead with my 2.5 yr old. Or if I'm really motivated I hit the grouse grind with my husband and toddler on the weekends. It's a great workout.

I have a desk job at a university. Every hour or two I get up and take a brisk five minute walk around the quad. 4 of these walks a day is an extra mile of exercise, not to mention a much need mental break from the computer screen!

I'm a runner, and run every morning. I have to "sneak" in my weight training and I have weights in my tv room and my bedroom, so that I can do a few reps easily while watching tv or before bed. My favorits way to work my core is to do planks-- I do regular planks during 3 commercials of my favorite shows (at least 2 minutes each!), and side lying planks on each side for 2 commercials. One tv show- lots of core work!!
