August Thrive Challenge

Inspired by the lifestyle changes recommended in Thrive and Thrive in 30, the Vega Community is here to keep you on track, share in your successes, and inspire even greater change to help you achieve optimal health.

Many of us have a workout routine or train regularly, and only believe we’re exercising if it involves a pair of sneakers. But there are, in fact, countless ways to keep fit without ever lifting weights and with a lot less effort.

Now that summer is in full swing, we can live an active lifestyle without discouraging weather conditions; so pick up your pace, take the stairs or run for a cause! We challenge you this month, to share what you’re doing to get fit without trying.

Focusing on my breathing and drinking more water!

I have 2 things I am doing this summer in addition to my regular exercise routine to get fit without trying:

1) I have been riding bikes with my kids when we go to do errands or other stuff during the day.  If we are going to the store for school supplies, shopping for groceries, going out to lunch, etc., we have been taking our bikes instead of the car. Not only good for the environment but good for our bodies as well.

2) My husband & I have been taking nightly walks after dinner - typically 2 to 4 miles.  We get to catch up on the day's events, plan future family events & activities, generally just have conversation without the kids around... and get some exercise at the same time.

I've been doing a "vegan experiment" now for 3 months - never felt better - its awesome! I try to mix it up at work  - instead of sitting down at work all day - I stand for alot of the procedures I do during the day and also at the computer too! Try to keep sitting to a minimum!:)

I am training for the Harvest Century in wine country.  I am cycling everyday and have added weights to my workout 3 times a week.

I adopted a new puppy!  I also got a new job.  The new puppy helps in running around playing...running up and down the beach and paddling on a surfboard (he LOVES the water), or at least going on daily walks on days I'm too pooped to do anything else.  The new job is great on my abs and arms...I take pictures of dolphins for photo-identification and cataloging of the local population of bottlenose dolphins.  Holding up an slr camera with a huge zoom lens while trying to balance on a boat is a great for toning the whole body!

We are a one car family so I use my trusty commute bike to get around my suburban neighbourhood. Whether it is riding to the grocery store, riding to the coffee shop or riding to yoga - I'm able to squeeze in effortless exercise without thinking about. Doing these errands on my bike really does take the "stress" out of at times tedious tasks!

I am newly married and my husband and I have busy lives.  We make time for exercise and a healthy lifestyle.  I plan to add rowing to my weekly routine.  It seems like a great way to get a total-body workout in a short period of time.  Great cross training.  Additionally, I plan to practice some of this geat nutrition knowledge I've acquired reading Thrive and taking the Thrive in 30.

I've been working on biking to work at least a couple times a week. It's a hilly 5 miles each way, so it's a pretty good workout!

I have two teenage boys and we do things like handstands / walking on our hands for fun all the time. Such a great exercise and we have a laugh seeing who can keep up the longest or walk the furthest. Keeps you young too! I'd rather my kids be embarrassed with me doing handstands all the time rather than looking bloated and not being able to move properly!

A good way to get the blood pumping in the morning is to bike to work. I live around 15km from work so it's a good warm up for my job as a produce clerk where I am pretty much active throughout the whole day. When I get home I'll run for a couple hours.

Hi!  A great way to get in shape and save money at the same time is look at what you pay others to do for you.  In our community many folks have yard services.  We have a huge grass area on a slope that needs weekly mowing.  It is a great full body workout!  Walking and pushing the mower is wonderful aerobics plus lifting and dumping the grass clippings brings in more upper body.  I keep up a good pace so that by the time I'm done I've had a great workout, enjoyed the outdoors, and sucked up some Vit D from the sunshine.  It takes an hour, which is the time I would have spent working out at some other activity (bike riding, exercise DVD, etc.)

For me, "busting a move" is one of the most enjoyable ways to bust lbs and stress. I love to dance but I almost never make time to actually do it. When I was working in Nicaragua I was able to go to some fiestas where I would dance for hours, literally, on very warm summer evenings. With the salsa and reggaeton music I didn't have to move, I wanted to! And I think I was definitely using some muscles my regular weightlifting doesn't quite hit! I've missed it a lot so with much anticipation I am going to bring dancing back into my life, starting this Saturday night! Que bueno, thanks!

I am fortunate to have a gym at work so I get there 2 or 3 times a day.  I use the stairs at work, not the escalator.  I also make a point of walking  to and from as much as I can, not using transportation.

To take on the Thrive Challenge August, I have joined an unlimited month of Yoga and mis-read the schedule and did a power yoga session. Wow and yay! I was sweating like crazy, but that's supposed to be good right? I've been building up my running (walk/run program) and have now added an hour bike before my 45min run. Breakfast with the Health Optimizer and huge salads at every meal... I'm feeling pretty good. My goal is to begin biking to work in September (I'm a teacher.) Here we go!!

A little over a year ago I suffered a quad contusion that shifted my back and pelvis enough to pull my hamstring. Needless to say, I thought I was out of the fitness game for a while and recognized that I had to see fitness in a different light. How was I going to stay fit when my inner core muscles weren't firing due to the twisted pelvis and I could barely walk without hamstring flare-ups? I chose to stay fit through exploring nutrition options, feeding my body for a new, less active (for a while) lifestyle. I remembered Brendan's food pyramid from "The Thrive Diet" and figured, it was now or never to test it out! Big salads, huge variety of plant based proteins and whole natural foods. The change suited my body, mind and spirit well! I actually leaned out, had more energy and now that I am able to ease back into more intense activities, I'm fitter then I think I've ever been. A totally different approach then I've ever had to keeping fit but a lifestyle change I plan to keep!

I have to commute 2 hours a day :( to work but I spend every spare moment doing Nordic pole walking (I try for an hour and a half a day) which really adds up to a workout when the temp is 106 degrees or more.  I also do resistance training 3 times a week.  Of course I wouldn't be able to do any of it without WFHO every morning with extra protein, extra psyllium, CoQ and green tea extract.

I love taking long walks and running and playing with my dog on the beach. What a great way to energize and start the day!

I'm going to bed on time.  It seems so simple but when I don't get enough sleep I don't feel like working out.  More sleep = better workouts and improved consistency.

I am a caregiver for 3 different individuals and find that sometimes situations come up which prevent me from making it to the gym for my 3 mile power walk and weight training.   I do alot of lifting and slow walking at work but dont get much abe workout.  Determined not to be outdone, I started engaging my core while performing my duties.  Abe workout without even trying!
