August Thrive Challenge

Inspired by the lifestyle changes recommended in Thrive and Thrive in 30, the Vega Community is here to keep you on track, share in your successes, and inspire even greater change to help you achieve optimal health.

Many of us have a workout routine or train regularly, and only believe we’re exercising if it involves a pair of sneakers. But there are, in fact, countless ways to keep fit without ever lifting weights and with a lot less effort.

Now that summer is in full swing, we can live an active lifestyle without discouraging weather conditions; so pick up your pace, take the stairs or run for a cause! We challenge you this month, to share what you’re doing to get fit without trying.

I try to fit in extra exercise as often as I can.
In elevators (alone or with my boyfriend): I go into the corner, hoist myself up by the bars on the side and do as many leg lifts as floors I am going up. I also do handstands for the length of an elevator ride. Handstands are more difficult in elevators compared to on the ground since the pressure changes. It's fun! I also do stretches in elevators. Haha... yeah, I make myself laugh.
I walk and bike up a large hill to work every day. Sometimes up to three times in a day. Glutes burn, and my heart rate raises every time.
I always take the stairs down in the morning from my 9th floor. It warms me for the walk/ride to work, and I also bike for almost all short distances. it is so much more efficient!

Every day I walk 40 minutes for my work commute - this is on top of a 35+ minute metro commute. I could take a bus but I love walking downtown San Francisco and feeling the burn in my legs when walking uphill. I feel great about my choice to walk.

When I ride the bus to work in the morning, I get off 2 stops early and walk the extra distance.

I've been working out with kettlebells for 2 1/2 yrs now, and 5 weeks ago we got a puppy. I've been taking him out for a run or hike in the mountains every day, which is great for my mind and body.  I've been experimenting with the Thrive recipes, and so far am totally feeling what Brendan describes in the book. I'm not as hungry as I thought I'd be!

I am a long distance runner and I love to enhance relaxation, focus and flexiility as much as I can with yoga...whenever i'm doing housework or gardening I am mindful about my posture and hold those stretches until my muscles and joints thank me!

I ride about an hour and back to the only place in town that makes vegetable juice so I don't miss it every morning, and then I usually run to my mom's office where I work in the afternoon. I also just put in a pull up bar in my door that I try to do pull ups on every time I walk in and out!

I bought a bicycle which I make a point of riding regardless of how ridiculously hot and hilly it is in Hong Kong where I live.

Also, I am aiming to eat at least 70% of my food in raw and whole form.

I have started by quitting smoking. I also take ballroom dance lessons. I am going to start going to more group classes and add one more private lesson a week, as well as finally go out dancing for real, not just at the studio. And because the studio is so close (3 miles) I am going to ride my bike there at least twice a week.

I bring a 1L jug of water to work and fill it up 3 times throughout the day. This forces me to get up at least every hour and walk to the washroom. These extra steps add up at the end of the week. Sometimes I decide to use the farthest washroom which includes 2 flights of stairs. :)

I like in a small city so I can easily get around with my bicycle.  I also work on an organic farm about 16 miles from where I live, so this is a great ride that I take twice a week.  I recently started practicing Bikram yoga, which I love, and I also recently started training to run my first half marathon!  I sneak in exercise through dancing at social events like weddings! :)

I go everywhere by bike. I have no car and even in winter I have to go to work and do the shopping by bike (or if it's really bad by ski). I also have to walk my Jack Russel at least 2 hs. a day - otherwise he would drive me crazy. :)

Luckily, I live in a place where I can walk to just about everything., It is especially lucky because I don't drive. I walk about 5 miles a day during the week. In addition to walking, I also work out for an hour a day, I l9ove weights, not too big a fan of cardio, but I do it when i have to :) Sometimes, if it is quite at work, I will do wall squats, push ups, chair dips, just about anything I can do in a few minutes and in a small space!!

I pace or walk while on telephone calls instead of just sitting. I never circle the parking lot looking for a "close spot." I walk for errands whenever possible. We pack our own refillable water bottles, lunches and snacks when going places so we don't have to rely on something healthy being available when we're out and about.

Things I do to get fit without trying are putting my 5 pound workboots on and my 5 pound tool belt to help weigh me down during the day. I wear them whether I'm doing work that requires them or not just for the exercise. I also carry things up and down the stairs of our high rise instead of the elevator. I use my bike or walk for errands that are close to home. I also have exercise equipment around our home so my wife or I jump on the trampoline or use the chin up bar or weights when we go by during the day.

I try to take a quick walk during my lunch breaks during the week. This summer's been so beautiful (when it hasn't be scorching hot!) that it's a shame to waste so much time indoors sitting at a desk. I've also been trying out a bunch of new alternatives in terms of food ie stevia instead of sugar, Earth Balance instead of butter, dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate. I have to admit, I'm feelin' great!!

I recently became a vegan, i also am a competitive figure skater and i love to do hot yoga. But a goal i have is to get enough water i always find im lacking in that particular area.

It is difficult to get enough exercise while being a paraplegic. I am trying to swim 2 hours a day instead of one hour a day

I use YouTube every day and do a workout with Billy Blanks; Tae Bo Cardio, Celebrity Fit or Ab Workout. Even if it is half an hour a day, you'll get fit! and you don't even need a lot of space, I do my workouts in my bedroom :)

My plan is to walk more. So I plan to meet with people at locations that are varying lengths away from my house so I'll need to walk there and perhaps walk back if I feel I can.  There's a park that my kids love that is further then another park we used to go to. So I can pack a little fruit and water and get them to walk there shortly before their dad gets off work and then he can come and meet us to. So the kids don't have to walk all the way back.  :)
