August Thrive Challenge

Inspired by the lifestyle changes recommended in Thrive and Thrive in 30, the Vega Community is here to keep you on track, share in your successes, and inspire even greater change to help you achieve optimal health.

Many of us have a workout routine or train regularly, and only believe we’re exercising if it involves a pair of sneakers. But there are, in fact, countless ways to keep fit without ever lifting weights and with a lot less effort.

Now that summer is in full swing, we can live an active lifestyle without discouraging weather conditions; so pick up your pace, take the stairs or run for a cause! We challenge you this month, to share what you’re doing to get fit without trying.

Hi,

I am currently recovering from a vertigo inducing sinus infection.  During recovery of said infection, I have been able to stop drinking coffee and feel tons better.  I will not lie though, I have found stimulants essential in my work and daily life.  I am hoping to use wise nutrition and healthier attitudes to  change my need for these stimulants (which will ultimately be my demise.)

I have also been trying since I was 40 to get rid of excess fat and be leaner and more energized.  It has felt like such an uphill battle so far.  I truly love being active and outdoors so I am hoping to be able to do that with more natural energy.

I am just starting with the Thrive suggestions so, wish me luck...

I Live in southern Vermont and the winter is coming!  I love the outdoors and can get my workout in everyday by collecting firewood. I start with my Vega sport drink to get fired up,grab the chainsaw and hit the woods. When it's time to bring out the wood I use a garden cart that has to bike tires. I fill it up and pull it to the stacking area. I then complete the workout by stacking the wood. Once the snow starts,it is a whole new workout program. stay tuned....

My son needs to improve in reading. Since he does not like to read but loves to watch me exercise, I decided to do 20 push-ups as well as 50 sit-ups and 20 squats for every paragraph he reads. Now I don't do all on each paragraph, lol, but when you consider that he has to read for an hour, tired, exhausted!!! But it is well with the effort for the reward! Hope this this finds you all in great spirit and health!

Dancing for hours on end, like at the many outdoor music festivals happening all over right now! It's working magic on my spirit and body, dancing from dusk until dawn, fueled by green smoothies, lots of dark chocolate and Vega Sport Performance Optimizer!

I'm training for a marathon in Oct.  I also got a high energy dog this summer, so we walk an additional 5 miles each day.   She also likes to play tug & frisbee.

I do gardening for people who like flowers but are no longer able to garden for health reasons. All that weeding with a trowel and getting up and down in gardens and digging is a great leg and arm workout.

When the weather is bad, I walk an indoor mall at least three times inside the entire facility, and I make several trips up and down escalators with each round, walking them up and down each time—trying to beat my own record of stair #s gained before you reach the next floor. The latter is a great way to easily and gently periodically flex the muscles used in speed walking so that you can resume walking right away with renewed effort. This is a good practice for those of us who physically cannot bike and are not ironmen!

I get fit without trying by just having FUN!!  Hula hooping, slack lining, dancing around to reggae in the morning, doing cartwheels through the park during my morning run, long hikes in beautiful places, etc!  And I do this all with a smile at age 30!!  :)

I decided to get my Spin instructor certification. I sub for the regular instructors at my gym. I love it when I get a call! I have to show up to workout plus they pay me to do so! I get at least 2-3 calls a week. This is on top of my regular regimen. I don't know if this is without trying but... it is definitely an addition to my week.

We have a farm market about 6 km away that grows everything they sell on site.  I ride my bike there 3-4 times a week to buy produce rather than driving which gives me exercise and fresh local produce all in one!

I always bike to where ever I need to go (and Montreal's a great city for it too)!

Walk/bike to class rather than take the bus. I always take the stairs instead of the elevator (unless I have something with me that I can't lift)

I always take the stairs instead of the elevator. I will walk to the grocery store when I need those last minute items. If I do have to drive to a shopping centre I park at the far end of the lot. I always find parking and my car receives less scratches and dents. Not to mention the whole back yard is a garden so it forces us to get moving.

Riding my bike 3 to 4 times a week.  The best medicine after knee surgery.

I chase after my kids!  Trying to keep up with them is a challenge in itself, but fun!

I have signed myself up for two mud runs and a 10K to challenge myself and have a really good reason to kick it up a notch with my fitness level.. One of the mud runs is hard core & I am training whenever I can. In addition to being in the gym more I run my stairs at home, do lunges and squats when playing at the park with my kids and do ab work when I watch tv at night. A side effect of all this is that my friends are noticing and are being inspired.
