Optimising Women's Health - Dr Pam Popper

This may be preaching to the converted, but here's Dr Pam Popper, who's a passionate proponent of a whole-foods plant-based diet for optimal health, including balancing hormones.

She also features in the Forks over Knives film, along with Dr T Colin Campbell, author of The China Study.  Has anyone seen it?

Hi everyone - especially those of you who have tussled with mid-cycle / premenstrual blues and mood swings!

I've seen a few posts here about how The Thrive Diet has helped with hormonal fluctuations, even though Brendan started from a standpoint of improving athletic performance.

I wrote a review of the first book over two years ago - and the principles still work for me.

Please join the group to share your experiences and link up with tips to banish PMS.

Best wishes, Bo

Mostly, I notice that I'm much hungrier which in turn probably causes me to reach for those not so good for me things.  *sigh*  Actually, yeah, I caved in and had a few bites of organic ice cream which I wouldn't have normally done.

i went into menopause october 2010, i have since gained 30 pounds.  my energy level has decreased dramatically.  for the last two months i have been weight training 4-6 days a week doing supersets for no less than 1 1/2 hours per session.  in the last three weeks i have been climbing the stair master for 20 minutes, now, due to time constraints,  i've been running on the treadmill only the last two weeks for 30 minutes between 5.5 and 6 mph.  i feel like all i am doing is gaining weight!  i am so miserable.  i am going on 52 and am a vegan,  any suggestions, i am wide open to help! p.s. prior to menopause last year, i was riding 200 miles per week, now,,,, zero miles!

Debbie, that sounds tough.  And sudden! Didn't you have any perimenopausal symptoms in the lead up to menopause?

Anyhow, as to gaining weight, is it weight 'around your middle'? And are you stressed out (apart from by the weight gain etc)? The reason I ask is that cortisol and adrenalie can really scupper any weight management - regardless of how much exercise you do - and usually show up as abdominal weight gain (the 'apple' shape, rather than the pear).

At the same time, remember that carrying some extra weight isn't all bad: body is probably holding on to estrogen in fat cells now it's stopped producing estrogen from your ovaries.

The lack of energy is a bigger issue, especially since you were obviously super fit.

You say you're vegan, but are you also eating a whole foods diet? Might there be any other underlying reasons for your sudden fatigue?   Are your hormone changes affecting how much you sleep?

Questions, questions! Tell us more...

yes, i was on whole foods only, for the most part, macrobiotic, sometimes raw, which i truly enjoyed.  i guess i really didn't have any symptoms leading up because i was so active and was eating properly.

this was just an "i woke up today and feel like crap" and could not shake the exhaustion thing, physically.  my sleep, i get very little now.  the fat, yes, mostly around the middle, but my legs are so fat too, and my upper arms!  ahhhgggg.  my eating habits have not been regimented like they used to be.  it was a physical and mental exhaustion.  i just haven't been able to get back into that groove!

If you are so tired all the time, have you had your iron and thyroid levels checked?

Also what about your stress levels?  Excess cortisol can lead to both fatigue and weight gain.

I wonder if this article might be helpful - do you recognise some of the symptoms? Although I'm not a fan of synthetic supplements, I generally have faith in Dr Glenville's approach to women's health and hormones.

Hey Ladies, I am so glad that someone is out here educating the public on knowing their bodies better and taking responsibility for feeling great and actually being well!

I take care to feed my body real food and feed my endocrine system real food as well. Let me know if you want to find out more about what I am doing.
