share. learn. thrive!

I started taking Vega WFO when it first came out. 5?? years ago now? I've lost track.

Anyways, I stopped for a long while, and recently re-started.
Funny thing. My stomach doesn't seem to be agreeing with it this time around.
Has the formula changed since it's first incarnation?
Does anyone else experience issues? (Bloating? Gas? Other??)

Maybe my body chemistry has changed, but I don't think that's the sole reason.
Any feedback would be great!

A topic that comes up occasionally in the forum. I usually recommend upping your water intake as there is a lot of fibre and cleansing effects when starting up again. For other tips, check out this chain.

The formula was tweaked slightly since it was originally introduced but the changes were primarily made to the flavor and multi-vitamin and mineral content. We reduced the amount of stevia making it a little less sweet and upped the vitamin and mineral content to meet 100% RDI.

Other tip is to start out slow and gradually increase your serving size. Your body will adjust and the bloating/gas should subside. Happy to help if you have other questions!

Thank you both.

I did wonder if it was part of the cleansing process.
I hadn't thought of water intake, but I will try it.

On it's own, it doesn't seem to be a problem.
If I eat something two/three hours down the road, that's when the problem occurs.

I will monitor to see if it lessens.
(No. Not currently taking any other products like greens or algae on it's own)

Hi there,
When I first started taking WFO I found I had pretty nasty cramps of lessening degrees over about 3-4 weeks. Bloating, gas etc. all a part of the package. Now I find I feel fantastic after consuming it, but I noticed that if I ease up on my fiber or WFO intake, or just eat some simple sugars for a bit (pumpkin pie anyone?) it again takes a bit of an adjustment to return to the WFO. I'd say stick out as much as you can or reduce the amount if you need to... in a few weeks it should go away!
Good luck with it!

Anytime I've gone off it, i had to ease back into it with small servings. Most people I know who've had similar problems did fine when they eased into it with small servings and gradually increased the serving size.

Let us know any updates on how your body is handling it

I'm having this problem with both the WFO and the simple protein powder. I've been on and off WFO for over a year and noticed the same problem each time but it doesn't go away despite addressing water and fibre intake issues. I'm wondering what it could be that's a problem for me in there. Could stevia be an issue? I know I'm not able to consume any of the 'bad' chemical sugar substitutes because of the stomach pain and bloating.

Yesterday I had the performance protein in a shake before a run and by that evening I looked 3 months pregnant and am still uncomfortable the next day. I'm hoping perseverence will just make it go away!!!

The formula hasn't changed as far as I know. I bloat from the product as well as a number of people I have met personally and on this site. My naturopath says it's from the FOS (fructoogliosaccharide). FOS occurs naturally in onions, bananas, tomatoes, chicory root, tomatoes and other foods and is primarily used as an alternative sweetner. Some folk are sensitive to it and certain bacteria in your gut thrive on it. Both of these situations can cause bloating and gas.

Wikipedia has this to say:All inulin-type prebiotics, including FOS, are generally thought to stimulate the growth of Bifidobacteria species. Bifidobacteria are considered as "Friendly" bacteria. This effect has not been uniformly found in all studies, both for Bifidobacteria and other gut organisms [6]. FOS are also fermented by numerous bacterial species in the intestine, including Klebsiella, E. coli [7] and many Clostridium species, which are considered less-friendly bacteria in the gut. These species are mainly responsible for the gas formation (hydrogen and carbon dioxide), which results after ingestion of FOS. Most people can eat 5-10 gram of FOS without gaseous discomfort, whereas others have problems with 1 gram. The estimated optimal dose for adults is around 5-10 gram/day [8][citation needed].

I still use WFO but sparingly and alternate it with other Vega products and plain hemp protein in my smoothies. Digestive enzymes may or may not help you.

Tara,

I doubt it's the stevia. The first time around, again, 5 or 6 years ago now, I did not have the gas issues, and I'm fairly certain I remember stevia as a listed ingredient from back then.

Personally, I think the formula has changed since then, and there's something in it now that wasn't there 5 years ago that's giving me issues. Unfortunately, I don't have a tub lying around from five years ago to tell you if the ingredients are the same or not :)

Only the Sequel and Vega people can tell us, I guess.

PS. Love the "Vega Sport".

The Performance Optimizer sport or the protein? Both are awesome but I take the PO before every run!

I thought the Vega Sport WAS the Performance Optimizer.
Is there a third product I don't know about that's neither the WFO nor the PO?

Yes, there is a third product that has been out for a number of years: Whole Food Smoothie Infusion

Oh right.

Got that in my cupboard :D

It's a good product.
I meant I love the "Sport", though.
Been somewhat addicted to synthetic energy drinks in the last 4 years.
So this, I felt, was a nice stepping stone to get off any kind of energy drink.
