share. learn. thrive!

So I am sitting here on the computer making an appt to go see my Dr. This is the third day with a cold that started out as phlem and a sore throught. It is now turned into a whole boddy ache, coughing, sneezing, nose is so sore that blowing it hurts. So much mucus coming from way to many places.

So as I uploaded some race finish photo's I thought I would ask the question (this may have been asked I am just not feeling very well and didnt want to go through all the older discussion boards) what do you do when you get a really bad cold.

I mean I can usually "suck it up" but this thing has nocked me on my ass. I cut my run short, and came home and now I just want to crawl into the corner and feel sorry for myself.

So Community. What works for you?

Dave

First your excercise routine should be put on hold for a couple days (your wife was right), it can add to the overall stress your body is under right now. Then focus on food types that will boost your levels of vitaminsC and lesser A&E. Also zinc is an important factor in immune system boost.

I have a suggestion for the mucos issue. Try this: Make a pot of green tea and let it steep good and strong (within reasonable taste limits). Pour a large mug full. Add some tobasco sauce (or another strong red pepper sauce), as much as you can handle comfortably. Then add Lemon juice 1-2 tsp per cup. Honey will allow some red pepper to stick to the walls of your throat to provide pain relief (optional). This will loosen flem so its not so hard to expell...keep tissues handy your nose may run like a faucet. DO NOT do this If you are in a high fever!

You can combine this tea with putting a mentholated salve on your chest and throat...bundle up in sweats and crawl under the blankets for a nap. This will induce a sort of fever that will turbo charge your recovery..I usually sweat out a cold the first night and am fine afterward. Last Friday I felt the beginings of a cold in my throat and nasal passage and just made the tea saturday and sunday...I was fine on monday...dodged a bullet!

You must remain low stress for 5-7 days following cessation of symptoms to a void recurance. Drink a pot of green tea daily for this period.

I know it sounds harsh but it works better than Buckleys ...SHHHH!

Thanks for the great advice. I am a bit a green tea addict as it is. So that's not a problem I will pick up some honey. My wife adds some lemon juice to my tea when I am sick, but I never thought of adding tabasco sauce. Deffinitly will try this suggestions

Just got back from Dr's sz I have a lung invection!! So I am now set to see a specialist!!

Off to my little corner in the room to wrap up in the dark!

Ya lung infection thats a whole new ball of wax! take that treatment seriously and good health to you! the tea might help with the mucos but watch your temp for fever as red pepper can raise your temp.

I agree with Jay except that 5 to 7 days seems a bit long for waiting to return to running. I understand the thinking behind it but usually if I get sick one good day of rest after I feel better and I am good to go.

Go to bed! We recently had to cancel Brendan's tour because he came down with the flu. Sometimes despite the very best diet our bodies need a break from all that exercise. Hope you feel better soon!
