Hi, I am a beginner user of Vega. The first 2 months were GREAT! I had a shake in the morning for
breakfast (1 scoop & added fresh fruit, usually a banana or
cherries) I took my vitamins later in the day as usual & had no
problems. I felt wonderful.
I quit using Vega for about 2 weeks (just not making the time in the morning) A week ago I decided to get back to
it & made one for lunch...1 scoop. A few hours later I became very
ill, hot & chills. Soon I was throwing up EVERYTHING until I dry
heaved (sp?) Anyway, I did not want to think Vega was the reason so I
just took a week away from it & yesterday I had another for lunch (1
scoop) - a few hours later- same result-I was so sick. That was all I
had for lunch & Water (Smart Water) I don't understand this at all. I might have a gluten sensitivity, but gluten never makes me sick likes that- usually it makes my joints hurt, stomach bloat but not like I have food poisoning, the way this feels.
So here is what I do know. -- I can NOT take vitamins high in iron, during both pregnancies I was
unable to take prenatal due to the high iron, the sickness was very similar to what I feel after WFHO but not to the same degree.
So here is my theory & (I welcome all input)---- I love spinach (RAW) I eat it a lot, I HAVE
BEEN TOLD that Spinach depletes iron??? or that it makes the body unable to absorb it?? I have found that some researchers agrees while others disagree. IF however, that is
true then it could provide me with the answer I have been looking for.
Here is why: I ate raw spinach everyday for nearly 2 months, sometimes 2 servings a day (i really love it) that was prior to ordering
my Vega shakes, so perhaps I was keeping my iron down eating spinach
enough that I could handle the 100% DV in the Vega Mix. Over the last
month I have not had as much spinach, I think I ate it so much I got
just a little tired of it. I still eat it about twice a week not twice a
day. Anyway, I am very sad that all of a sudden Vega is making me so
sick (it is the only explanation that makes sense) what should I do?
Should I increase my spinach again & in a few weeks try the Vega
again? Anybody else had this problem? Anybody else have issues with high
Iron? Why do some have higher Iron?
Do you think that there is another explanation? Any answers/suggestions- Thanks!!
I'm celiac, and having been living on the Vega Sport drink, WFHO, plus a mostly raw diet for about a year now, since Sequel sponsored my son and I on our Mantracker episode. I get my iron from Organic Unsulphured Blackstrap Molasses, It's very high in iron, and brought up my iron count when I was pregnant. I also love the taste and add it to my shake in the morning.

ps, our episode will air in the fall, and they will be using it as the advertsement for the upcoming season... they said it's their best episode so far!
Actually, I thought I would point out that spinach is high in iron and does not prevent the absorption of iron in fact it slightly does but it is still very high in iron. I have not read much on it but I would think that the amount of iron would overcome the slight absorption problems spinach arises. Vega would provide 100% RDI however and that could be causing your problems. However it does sound off that were you able to handle such amounts of spinach.
I don't know if this helps, but my first guess would be that you ate too much of the same green for too long, without rotating your greens. I've read in many places to be careful about eating too much of one green for too long, as they all have something in them (is it oxalic acid) that in nature is supposed to prevent them from being overeaten. I too am a spinach lover, i mean really who can't love spinach! But i am careful to rotate my greens, the most i eat quantities of a green in a row is probably a max of 5 days to a week.
