Vega Community

share. learn. thrive!

Hi All,

My apologies if this question has already been addressed.  I read through discussions, but didn't really find a direct answer.

I'm wondering: what is the best use of Vega Sport Plant Protein?  Is it a meal-replacement (similar to WFHO)?  When is the best time to use it?

Today, I drank the VSPP about 20 minutes after my workout.  The workout consisted of about 45 minutes of light cardio (as I'm getting over some leg injuries) and about 30 minutes of weights/strengthening.  Is this okay/appropriate use of VSPP?

Any advice is much appreciated!  Thank you in advance.  I'm so happy to have this community to turn to for advice and guidance.

In health,
Lisa

Hi Lisa - Yes, this would certainly be appropriate! The purpose of VSPP is a clean protein source. Where WFHO is more of a daily, all-in-one, VSPP is for people who workout intensely and are looking to add clean protein. This could be in addition to WFHO for intense workout days. Does that help? Let me know if you need further info.
Thanks Kelly! Very helpful! :)
such an awesome product! i've already gone through my first container, i've got three backups. I love how smooth the texture is (Vanilla Flavor is awesome) and I'll usually take about 3-4 scoops throughout the day. That let's me save the Whole Food Optimizer for just the mornings.... sometimes one scoop before bed. I've got a few weight gainer whey proteins in my cupboard to use up, after those are gone I plan to rely solely on Vega. Thanks Sequel, my tummy loves your products so much more.
Love, love, love it! This is the type of message to start the week of with!

Hey Michael,
So I'm just curious...do you take the VSPP throughout the day, everyday? Or just on days with a more significant workout? In addition to regular meals?
Thanks!

Hi Lisa,

Personally I would suggest that you have a recovery drink or snack which has 4 to 1 carb to protein mix after your workout (in the 45 minutes after your exercise) and only the VSPP later, maybe an hour after that. In that 45 minutes your body needs carbs to replenish the glycogen in your muscles and this is a critical period to refuel. you can use the VSPP in that recovery drink if you want (I use some Hemp protein) as well.

And from my limited experience with VSPP, it doesn't contain the amount of fiber you find in the WFHO so will not feel like a meal replacement.

I have the VFHO about 60 to 90 minutes after my recovery drink but will also have the VSPP (one scoop) if I feel I need more protein and on heavy training days but I don't have it at the same time as the VFHO. You can even put some VSPP in your recovery drink (I usually put 1 Tablespoon of Hemp protein but I might try that soon).

I know some people use the VSPP throughout the day.

Good luck
Anne
Thank you for your advice, Anne! I'm finding some success with recovery nutrition thanks to your suggestions.
So for years I've been using whey in my post workout drink (20-30g worth) which I've always been told to consume within 45 mins of finishing exercise. I consume coconut water immediately after in the car ride home, then make the shake about 30 minutes later. AND I was always under the impression that this shake should be virutally fat free in order to have the quickest absorbtion. I'm so confused now as to when to use the Whole Food Optimizer and when to use the Sport Performance Protein? I would think that you wouldn't use the Whole Food Optimizer after a workout at all because it doesn't have the recommended amount of post workout protein and because it contains fat. Someone please help me!!!
Sorry for the late reply Lisa,

my goals include building muscle (and guys usually take more protein) so I'll take the optimizer in the morning and sport protein throughout the day. people say you can only process about 30g of protein in one hour (maybe this plant protein is absorbed more efficiently as its super digestible?) so i will just mix one scoop in water, shake and chug. after exercise is key. i try to get some carbs in first, wait a little bit and then drink. usually if i'm a good boy i'll get in 4-5 scoops a day. i have a high metabolism so to pack on pounds the proper way is quite a challenge.

id say you should just take the same amount everyday. no matter if you workout or not, your body's gonna want protein to help rebuild and repair muscle thats been broken down... this is happening all the time.

and tracy in reply to your confusion, my belief is as follows:
i consider the whole food optimizer my multivitamin for the day. every morning before my solid breakfast. sometimes i may feel the need to drink a scoop before bed as opposed to my old way of drinking a sustained release whey/casein protein shake (which quite honestly, makes you gassy and smelly and theyre loaded with junk).

with the release of the sport protein, i have now converted almost completely to that as my source of extra protein that i can't get from diet. i'll take one and a half scoops after my workout (i'll get some carbs in me first... usually dates or a little bit of brown rice and a banana) and then continue to drink random scoops throughout the day...

depending on your goals, your intake will vary. good to not get in alot of fat after your workout.

i just realized brendans books have the answers to everyones questions! if you havent read thrive and thrive fitness... youre missing out. KEY information especially on sports performance.
thanks so much michael! that really helped, and was the answer I was hoping for. I was becoming overwhelmed wondering how to use the VSPP in place of the whey when Brendon was suggesting WFHO post workout... then I realized that Thrive was written before the VSPP was created... this makes sense, right?

I really appreciate your insight! Thanks!
I just tried the VSPP for the first time - the Berry flavor - and found it a little too sweet for my taste. For those of you who have tried several of the flavors, do they all have ~ the same sweetness level or are some flavors less sweet? I didn't notice this so much in the WHO but I've never tried the berry version. I prefer the plain.
