Permalink Reply by Susan M Hooper on August 30, 2010 at 6:03pm Hi! I will add that food combining is a great option. You may also slightly want to reduce the fiber just by a hair. I am soy-free and gluten-free vegan, yet I still can't eat broccoli, it just gives me problems, as well as cauliflower, cabbage and cucumbers. They all do the same to me. You may want to see about certain foods that give you gas. Sprouted foods does a NUMBER on me, yet I eat almost all raw, just not a lot of fun sprouted foods sold in markets. When I first started the VEGA products, I was miserable, but I knew they had all EXCELLENT stuff in them, so I pressed on with them but reduced my intake to 1/2. This worked PERFECT. No gas, better digestion...etc. So I think that a gradual approach as well as food combining may help. Now, I can't imagine living without the VEGA. It has changed my entire body. I do know I can't buy ANY of the products with wheatgrass. That stuff is TERRIBLE on my system. You may want to add an extra probiotic such as aciphollulus. I take the VEGA Whole Foods Health Optimizer ( 1 scoop in morning smoothies ) and then use the Vega Smoothie Infusion in my nighttime smoothies. While they do have pro and pre biotics, I still take at least 3-4 different supplements of them as well. It is a little expensive, but my system works so much better, gas, and everything, with them.
In adition, choosing raw is great website so check that out. I love the choosing raw website. Nuts and fruits work fine for me ( dried fruit) but fresh fruit doesn't. If you're eating ALOT of fruit, that's probably why. It contains fructose a sugar that lots of people can't digest. I can't eat fresh fruit alot at all. I can in my smoothies, but not any other way. I use frozen fruit in my smoothies and do dried fruit and nuts and don't have a problem. Try this, it may just solve your issues. Grains give me problems too.. I cut them out and things flow much better:) Try baked starches instead of grains for a few days, like winter squash which is delicious. I have a great recipe on my website!

I run a health blog and hold a Nutrition degree. On the site I advocate a plant-based lifestyle and HUGELY support the Vega supplements. Definitely check it out if you get a moment:)
Hope things get better!:)

I just put in my request to return my WFO and the protein shake. My body can not process it. I have been vegan for about 6 months and the digestive issues started when I started drinking these items. I tried using half the amount, a half scoop, every other day serving...etc...but it was just gross from a digestive stand point. I am a firm believer in listening to your body, because it will speak to you. I figured this out after I discovered I have an intolerance to gluten/wheat.
Here is a great recipes from Bob Harper who is a vegan. This is a great alternative to WFO shakes. Also, I love Vega in many ways, I enjoy the energy bars and the performance juice before a workout.
With the shake below I usually don't add as much fruit.
MY Green Drink (398 calories)
Add all ingredients (listed below) to a blender and blend until combined.
Supplements (218 calories)
Fruits & Veggies (180 calories)

I've had that transition period for about 4 to 5 weeks taking Vega. It now stopped and I am eating the same food as I ate in the last 6 weeks when I started Vega. I only use the Optimizer and the Performance protein. I eat a lot of lentils, beans and quinoa.
I was worried at the beginning but after about the 5th week I noticed that I am okay. My energy started to be stable and my training mileage started to increase. This is my 7th week using Vega as workout drink (Optimizer) and recovery drink (Performance Protein).
Just wanted to input my experience. Hope that helps.
Permalink Reply by Erika Thorpe on December 17, 2010 at 8:05am Cruciferous vegetables tend to cause gas particularly if eaten raw, they include broccoli, cabbage, kale, brussel sprouts, and cauliflower. I have eaten mostly raw (70-100%) for a few years now but still can't digest raw cabbage....so I make Kimchee out of it. The fermentation seems to help. Also if you eat dried fruits make sure they aren't treated with sulfur dioxide, it can really mess you up especially for those who have sensitivities to sulfites.
Permalink Reply by Melissa on December 17, 2010 at 8:29am Unfortunately for me the Performance Protein that you drink post-workout gives me the same effect at WFO. However the optimizer is GREAT! I worked out at the gym for 3 hours! I did crash after though. I think mainly because I have recalibrate and I don't have stimulants in my body. So now I use half a serving of the optimizer.

Permalink Reply by Jim George on December 19, 2010 at 4:48pm Try cutting back on grains and foods made from grains.
I find I do well on about 3 oz maximum by volume daily.
My wife knows when I've slipped into non vegan foods
when I smell like I been cutting cheese.

Permalink Reply by Jean-Sébastien Binette on January 22, 2011 at 9:10am I totally agree with all of you who experiences gas problem with Vega... It is very frustrating, since it is a very good product and it goes with my believes, but my body simply do not like it!
Same things as others, I stop using it and nasty farts disappear and reuse it and nasty farts came back! And if I take a full portion two times per day I experienced also guts pain!!
I tried to add a small scoop of fiber in the Vega. It helps a bit, but not that much.
SInce I started a strenght program, I want to use the opportunity window just after my training. I do fruit smoothie (banana, blueberry and ginger) and add a table spoon of hemp protein only (not Vega), but still experience nasty farts. I will try just fruits next time and 30 minutes after hemp protein only to see if I notice a difference. I will let you know.
My last try will be to use hemp seed only 30 minutes after drink my fruit smoothie.
Cheers,

Hello All,
I too have a had a problem with some serious gas, and have pinpointed it to the Vega - Complete whole food optimizer. There things are hard to figure out some times, since we have many things in our diet, and i tried all kinds of probiotics and different dietary things, until i occured that i should stop/start vega for short times and see what happens.
I love the product, and like having it as a suppliment to an alread good diet, but there are some gas issues. I have a feeling that this problem does not affect everyeone, but there may be some of us. Looking at the ingredients, I wondered if there was one in particular that could be more of a problem.
My current guess is that inulin could be the cause. that was a logical culptrit since it was a complex sugar and may be a substrate for bacterial fermentation in the colon. I just read the wikipedia article and it also support this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inulin
I have been using vega for a year, almost daily, about half a scoop per day, and for this whole year, my gas has been terrible and potent! It seems that some peoples systems can adjust, but mine cannot. It seems like inulin can have a lot of benefits, but for me the cons are too immediate and embarrassing. I am wondering if there could ever be an inulin free Vega protein product. I think it would require testing, and also some stats to see how many people are adversely affected, to assess the relevance of inulin side effects, to see if is really worth addressing the issue.
In the meantime, I would love a vega or similar product withouth the inulin. Overall, it is an excellent product, though unfortunately not for me. I have tried probiotics of various sorts, and other dietary changes, but none of these have helped my continue the vega without this problem.
I hope this is helpful and best of luck to Brenden and the Vega team.
