share. learn. thrive!

I run 3 miles almost every day, do well in races for my age group (55-59), but I can't get the scale to budge. Another 10-15 pounds would be fine, but it seems not only can I not shake the pounds but it seems my muscle is converting more to flab these days. Should I be eating more protein? Give me a meal plan for a few days of weight loss, please. thanks! :)

What foods are you eating currently? Drinking? How much water do you drink? Are you eliminating sufficiently?
about 70/30 raw. lowish fat vegan, though eat plenty of chia, flax and sesame seeds, occasional avacado. if i eat grains, try to eat quinoa, brown rice. 8 cups water, 3-4 cups green tea. do a Vega smoothie a few times a week, 1TBSP. only do bars before but mostly after a race or hard workout. and yes to the final question, from someone who almost died of a colon blockage many years ago. So I'm pretty well educated about all this. The scale says I'm healthy by most standards. Cholesterol 139. :) Total body fat 27%ish according to Tanita. 51% water. Maybe just too much of a perfectionist, but it just seems I ought to look more muscular, based on what I see at races and how much I know about what I'm doing to build muscle. But maybe it's just not possible... I've tried to post a current pix to give an idea, tho not sure it is working.

Hmm, I dont know, you look pretty good to me.. Im 23 and hope to be in your shape when Im your age! You probably know about food combining already if youve had colon problems but if not maybe try that? Up your greens?
Thanks for your kind words. To be clear, I'm the one on the ground. ;) I was down about 10 pounds 3 years ago, and it really makes a difference, not so much in my speed, but in my little back/knee aches and pains. Yes, I recognize that compared to the rest of the US, I look fabulous. :) But I was at my best 3 years ago and am just trying to get back there. The only difference that I can see was back then, I drank about twice as much (in strength) green tea. Maybe ran a little farther in distances.

I think I'm good on my greens. Belong to a great local CSA and get weekly doses of everything leafy from their wonderful farm. A couple of large salads at lunch and dinner. Just hoping someone might have the magic bullet...I mean a real magic bullet. Seriously, eating vegan has saved my life and has allowed me to run long after many don't/can't. I just want to keep it that way. At my age, I see many drop off the running track due to injuries, and I understand that more poundage can be a problem for the joints, even if there's no arthritis.

I do stretch and mild weight lifting. Too much sitting in a computer chair. Yeah, yeah, yeah....
Try to imagine if you were to start seeing a personal trainer, what would they have you do?
Most certainly they'd shake up your exercise routine by adding some strength training. I started seeing a personal trainer, and thought it would end up being the typical "eat 6 chicken breasts a day" and sitting at the gym doing weights and machines. Nope! It's more like bootcamp style. Only equipment I use is resistance bands, the occasional bosu ball and balance board. Adding some muscle not only gives you a toned look but helps you burn more calories. But the biggest single most important key to losing weight, especially those last stubborn 10 pounds is what you eat. I have lost 60lbs so far and losing about 2lbs per week by doing a walk/jog 2x per week and bootcamp style training 2x a week, and counting my calories....yes good old calorie counting. I make sure what I put in my mouth is nutrient dense and good for my body ...make those calories count. I wouldn't do it though without my app on my iphone, it counts for me :)
Wow, Jeannine keep up the great work and thanks for the ideas! I actually do work out fairly regularly 4-5 days a week with the high school track team and coach. Very boot campish, but I find I have to back off if I do too many push-ups and side planks. :) We do a lot of core work which as you know, is so helpful. What iphone app are you using?

I think that I am battling what one website lovingly calls, "menopot." :) Tho my waist is still considered a healthy measurement by US standards, I'm not sure how much I can change. Ramping up the green tea definitely makes a difference, but I have a heart murmur and don't like to mess with too many noticeable palpitations...
Sounds like you are very active, very inspiring! If you're already doing alot, perhaps it's simply a matter of changing it up a bit and also being extra careful in the kitchen. The app I use is called "Lose It!" and it's free. If your food isn't in the database you can add it to your own database, that's what I love about it.
What color is your pee? Is it yellow of clear/opaque? It shouldn't be yellow!! That means your dehydrated!!
