I am so glad you posted this because I get similar problems!

I was a horrible eater in high school but never had ANY skin issues with breaking out.

After high school i changed my lifestyle into being vegan, and then I got into juicing and smoothies and eating a ton of fruits and vegetables and then i really got into eating organic and now i am a raw foodist.

Despite my healthful changes my skin got worse!  I began breaking out terribly! I would have such severe acne and I would try EVERY natural method I could possibly come up with to help heal my skin but nothing would work!  I unfortunetly turned to medication (LAST RESORT!!!!) and it cleared up.  It only lasted for about half a year until it all came back again.  I went through the same routine of trying every natural remody for taking care of my skin and went to a holistic doctor and then a dermatologist.  I was very distresed to get on medication this time because it wasnt just cream to rub on my face...it was an antibiotic too!  It didn't help that my whole family doesn't get why I don't like to take medicine and they were thinking it was wierd i didnt just get on it and get my face cleared up.  So I did. I HATED IT!  I was SO happy when I got off of the medicine....but it did clear up my face again.

I don't want to get on medication ever again for face breakouts but in another few months I could be facing the same issues again.  I have such a clean life I am wondering where these toxins are comming from!

Hello L.M.,

The reaction you are experiencing is very normal. This is due to the Chlorella and Maca in the Whole Food Health Optimizer. The Chlorella is very detoxifying and the Maca is re-balancing out your hormones.

Make sure that you drink more water than usual to help the elimination process. It's very important to allow your body to flush out all the toxins that the WFHO is trying to eliminate. As well, if it is something that is bothersome to you, I would suggest reducing the amount of WFHO you are taking on a daily basis until your skin clears up, and then slowly build back up to the amount you are currently taking.

Hope this helps,

Alana

Hey, me, too! Thought it was some new peri-menopausal joy I get to experience!

Erin,

Great info!  Thanks!  I think I might have a similar sensitivity as you to the chlorella in the WFHO.  Did you naturopath just specify chlorella or did they mention other algae like spirulina?  I know that the VSPP has spirulina in it, though you said that you have been using it without any issues.  So do you think its more of a chlorella issues or would other types of algae cause similar effects?

Hi L.M.,

A number of us have been dealing with this.  Check out the discussion Acne

After 10 months of trying to rule out different causes, my naturopath felt it was unlikely still to be detox and determined I have a sensitivity to chlorella.  Since I stopped my chlorella supplement and stopped using the WFHO, my skin has completely cleared up again.  I still use the VSPP and VSPO with no problems.

Good luck!

Erin

I had a similar problem, but I had previous issues with acne already anyway when I was younger. In my case it was a detox situation, and was minor. Although I tend to lean towards raw food and to the basics of Thrive dieting 80% of the time, I do like to keep the differing opinions in the back of my mind, and Dr. McDougall's comments, "the fat you eat is the fat you wear' seems to still hold true for me. Healthy Omega 3's/6's (as found in WFHO) may be excellent for your health, but remember as you eat throughout the day, healthy fat is still fat nonetheless as far as clogged pores and acne are concerned. I am something of an expert in this area, and I can't see Chlorella or Maca being the problem. Drinking plenty of water certainly helps with the detox side, but it also helps prevent clogged pores. WFHO may still not be the real and sole culprit for your breakouts, but its inclusion into the rest of your diet where fats from other sources including nuts and seeds, hemp oil, avocados, olive oil etc may, along with not enough fibre (all aspects taken together), cause the problems you face. Call it a case of too much going on at once, that the body is force to excrete through the pores of the skin, inevitably causing acne in many cases.
The effects of acne are cyclacle, on any one given day you may have unknowningly reached your limit of fat, while at the same time elimanation may not be in sync, thus causing the build-up of fats, residues, toxins etc. We all have a different tolerance level to products that cause or help to cause elimanation, as much as we all have different tolerances to the types of food we eat. I still can't see how chlorella causes long-term acne. But I am glad you have found a balance that works for you.

Hi Paul,

I tend to agree with you about the fat in general.  However, I have been on low/no-fat diets before and still had the acne issue when taking chlorella.  I have incorporated more healthy fats into my diet now and removed the chlorella, and my skin is much better.

And yes my spelling is terrible tonight, its a party weekend, and I am treating myself to enough beers that my spelling and grammar go out the window. Have a great night.
