share. learn. thrive!

Hi Vega Friends!

I'm hoping for some nutrition ideas from this knowledgeable Vega community.  I am going to be having surgery later this week and will need to have a liquids-only diet for at least 2 weeks (and possibly longer...so sad!).  I'm wondering how I'm going to get really healthy, healing meals in a liquid format.  I've been 100% raw vegan for the past two months and really don't want to compromise my diet.

If you have any suggestions, ideas, or recipes, I would be so grateful!  Thank you so much.

Lisa

I don't know if blended fruit & greens count, but I hope THIS helps! :D

Thanks, Charlene. I'm a huge fan of the green smoothie!!! I'm thinking that I might be better off doing green juices, though. Not sure. Trying to find a good plan to get nutrition while still trying to heal. Thanks for the link!

Hi Lisa-
It's Maria from the Green Smoothie Challenge:) Can you drink a powder? I am a huge fan of Vitamineral Green. It is so nutritious and healing. Maybe you can add this to some juices. If you do enough juicing, like 4 quarts a day and add this, you should be able to get enough calories and it seems to me that would be INCREDIBLY healing for your body. Just be careful if you are taking meds. SMoothies would be great for the calories if you can drink those too. Heal well:)

Hey Lisa!

I know you just went through a green smoothie challenge....but being told you have to have a liquid diet means you want whole food even more, YA?...Is the fibre content of the liquid diet a concern? I like what Maria suggested...some fresh juices maybe carrot, apple, beet...etc. plus add a greens formula. Genuine Health has a couple varieties that are all probiotic aswell. Concentrated superfoods (greens) plus juices would give you high doses of the antioxidants needed for a speedy recovery, but careful not to induce too much cleansing that may make you feel icky. Was your green smoothie challenge a preparation for this surgery? You may not have to worry about that.

Take Care and let us know how you're doing!
Thanks for the suggestions, friends! I'm on my way to the hospital (boo!) tomorrow. I appreciate all of your ideas! Hope to be back in action soon. Lisa xo
We'll be thinking of you and sending healing thoughts to you! Be well my friend:) xoxo
Hi Lisa! I had surgery one week ago. Before surgery I planned my foods (as you are doing). However, I forgot to consider the effects of surgery (anesthesia and medications) on the "elimination system". Sorry to have to talk about such a personal thing but I wanted to get you thinking about the fact that your colon may not function normally for a few days (it took me 5 days). I am now 8 days post op and still not back to normal. I was taking an antibiotic and did not take my probiotics while on the antibiotic (big mistake!). So, my little note is to remind you to think about the fact that your GI tract may also be slow. So, think probiotics and fiber and LOTS OF WATER!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glutamine. Plenty of studies to support it aids in wound healing, and hastens recovery from surgery. Start with 5g/day work up to 15g/day.
Hi Lisa,

I am guessing you will be having a lot of smoothies. When I recently had surgery I added a lot of herbs to my smoothies as well as ginger-really good for reducing imflamation.

Good luck at get well soon : )
Hey All,

Thanks so much for the great suggestions. I'm one week into recovery and have basically been eating (drinking?) green smoothies and eating lots (and lots!) of fruit. Thanks for the reminder of ginger, Jasmin! I need to pop that in to some drinks for sure. Ellen, your info about the "elimination system" was sooooo helpful (honestly, after surgery, I was thinking "what is going on?!?!"). It made me feel much better. Kyle, what's the best way to get glutamine?

Thanks!!!
Lisa
yay! I am glad! I am now 2 weeks post op and I am wondering about nutritional supplementation to possible reduce the swelling a bit faster. I had a collapsed nasal passage and had cartilage grafting to rebuild it ... it was my second surgery for it and the swelling is bad and healing time slow the second time around. my doc said the swelling would persist for a longtime! Any idea about what helps with that other than Arnica?

Charlene you're everywhere!
I just had an appendectomy and I was on a liquid diet up until a few days ago. Smoothies became my friend and I did a lot of experimenting. I hope this becomes a popular thread for those in the future who search for surgery recovery and eating tips. If the body isn't healthy it won't recover as fast, gotta get those nutrients!

I take glutamine caps every day (optimum nutrition sells them) I get them in 1000 jars and have 2-3 daily.
