share. learn. thrive!
Am in the process of making Direct fuel bites from the Thrive Diet pg.125. Put all the ingredients together as directed but there is so little amount of mixture. This recipe is to make enough to freeze. Is it just me or are the recipes in the Thrive diet book not so accurate. Has anyone else made these at home?

Permalink Reply by Vega Kelly on February 3, 2010 at 8:31am I haven't tried making the direct fuel bites but I have tried a couple of the energy bars. I didn't realise initially just how small the 'bars' are. More like little balls really. I made the blueberry choc ones and added extra buckwheat to bulk out the quantities. I then rolled small balls, wrapped them in cling film and shaped them into rectangles. I have frozen the batch and when I get back from the gym, I take one out and let it sit on the radiator whilst I have a shower. By the time I'm out and getting dressed, it's just right and really tasty.
It's like anything you make the first time - it can be a bit hit and miss but once you've done it once, you get what you need to do next time to make it work.
It's definitely the size of the dates. I know Brendan usually uses Medjool dates which are much bigger than a lot of the other ones I've seen at the grocery store.
Since all the ingredients in the recipes are natural (hopefully organic) foods, size, consistency, water, etc will vary. I remember the first time I made the energy bars, I didn't squeeze enough water out of the dates after I soaked them and ended up with bars the consistency of pudding. Just added more dates until a block was formed.
I often find I need to double or triple the recipe if I want to make enough to freeze.

I actually thought of leaving the buckwheat out as it was an option.. but.. with your experience.. buckwheat is on my grocery list. I have only been following the thrive diet for a week. All the help I can get is much appreciated. I have tried a few of the other recipes in the book so if there is anything.. well just anything... I'm around :)

Permalink Reply by Melissa on December 12, 2010 at 12:44pm I just made the fuel bites. After the food processor part, I used an electornic scale to make sure I had .5 oz bites when making them. The quanity came out correctly, they are tiny but with all that coconut oil I am glad they are tiny!
Permalink Reply by Melissa on December 14, 2010 at 9:52am I can NOT hack these fuel bites. I ended up throwing them away. I am not a picky eater but the thought of eating solid coconut oil is not something I can down.
