share. learn. thrive!

Am in the process of making Direct fuel bites from the Thrive Diet pg.125. Put all the ingredients together as directed but there is so little amount of mixture. This recipe is to make enough to freeze. Is it just me or are the recipes in the Thrive diet book not so accurate. Has anyone else made these at home?

How funny, I JUST posted to my status 15 minutes ago about these bites. Did you use 5 dates and 2 tblsp (I don't know the stupid abbreviation, which I should since I've been reading these recipes for the past 30 days!) of coconut oil? I let it whirl around a bit, and every few seconds it would catch up to the glob of stuff and whip it around some more. Finally I took a spatula and arranged it on a cutting board, spreading it out with the spatula in a rectangle, and then cut it into 8 things, which I arranged on a big piece of saran wrap and then cut around them and wrapped them. As I did it, I thought 2 things. One, I need a smaller food processor for some of these recipes (or I need to make bigger batches) and two, it's messy but MAN they are good.

But as for other recipes, YES, I've had some troubles. I tried to make the fig-cinnamon bars, and I think I soaked the figs WAY too long because I could POUR the stupid batter out of the processor and there was NO way I was making any kind of 'brick.' I ended up working in some buckwheat flour, just so I could attempt to make bars. I'd call it a monumental failure, but eventually I did dry them out and wrap them. They are delicious and I've eaten a few out of the freezer, but they crumble and I'm not that into frozen things. I have yet to try again. I want to make the gels, but I can't imagine I'd be able to get the stuff out of my blender, again, I think I need a smaller food processor. Have fun and GOOD LUCK!
Hi Jeff
thanks for your reply.Good job on the bites. I agree they are delicious. I used 7 dates as I had honey dates not medjool. I tried to find the difference between the types of dates but all I could figure was that medjool dates are larger. 2 Tblsps.=2 Tablespoons of coconut oil is correct. So.. is each bite literally that... a bite. I got 8 of them with the same procedure basically as you did. They are probably 1 inch square size. I am not going to measure but roughly. Are yours that size?
Thanks again
ps I hear you about the food processor size .. ha
I haven't tried making the direct fuel bites but I have tried a couple of the energy bars. I didn't realise initially just how small the 'bars' are. More like little balls really. I made the blueberry choc ones and added extra buckwheat to bulk out the quantities. I then rolled small balls, wrapped them in cling film and shaped them into rectangles. I have frozen the batch and when I get back from the gym, I take one out and let it sit on the radiator whilst I have a shower. By the time I'm out and getting dressed, it's just right and really tasty.
It's like anything you make the first time - it can be a bit hit and miss but once you've done it once, you get what you need to do next time to make it work.
Annie - i think you are exactly right about the difference between the different dates. Mine were a little bigger than 1", I think, I'd say as big as a piece of bazooka bubble gum (I'm dating myself?), but basically the same. SARAH V, I love the idea of rolling into balls, I'm totally going to try that next batch. Thanks gals!
It's definitely the size of the dates. I know Brendan usually uses Medjool dates which are much bigger than a lot of the other ones I've seen at the grocery store.

Since all the ingredients in the recipes are natural (hopefully organic) foods, size, consistency, water, etc will vary. I remember the first time I made the energy bars, I didn't squeeze enough water out of the dates after I soaked them and ended up with bars the consistency of pudding. Just added more dates until a block was formed.

I often find I need to double or triple the recipe if I want to make enough to freeze.
Hi Sarah.. thank you for your reply. Your info helps. I plan to make the chocolate blueberry energy bars next time around. I actually thought of leaving the buckwheat out as it was an option.. but.. with your experience.. buckwheat is on my grocery list. I have only been following the thrive diet for a week. All the help I can get is much appreciated. I have tried a few of the other recipes in the book so if there is anything.. well just anything... I'm around :)

Thanks Vega Kelly. I think I will be tripling the recipe next time. Makes sense as long as the recipe comes out fine doing so. Think I will look for Medjools first so I can keep the ratios in order. I guess its how do they say.. heheh .. size does matter. Okay thats enough on that one. My chuckle for the day. The size of a date. As I am new to Thrive and really enjoying how I am feeling. I will say thank you to you again for your help. Enjoy your day! Thrive!

Hi Annie,

I love buckwheat and use it in loads of things. One recipe I am in love with is this:

I don't use as many dates as it says and add a bit of water - it's divine!
(I whizz it for ages in my coffee mill attachment so it gets warm and it's so comforting on a cold morning)

Hi Annie
For SURE it's the size. I made them yesterday and used ten honey dates, it worked fine. I did find that the coconut oil was so liquid that I put the food processor bowl in the frig for ten minutes, then went back to finish blending. They were perfect for my 2 hour bike /run this am! after I froze them, in spoonfuls in a ziploc bag.

I just made the fuel bites. After the food processor part, I used an electornic scale to make sure I had .5 oz bites when making them. The quanity came out correctly, they are tiny but with all that coconut oil I am glad they are tiny!

I can NOT hack these fuel bites. I ended up throwing them away. I am not a picky eater but the thought of eating solid coconut oil is not something I can down.

This recipe only makes 8-1" square bites so I would suggest doubling the recipe.  It would also make it much easier to process if you have a  fairly large food processor.  I found them very effective when I work out very early in the morning and do not want to eat a full breakfast before.  I provides the energy I need for an intense 1 hour workout.
