I am a 44 yr old female who has been doing the thrive diet since January. I have competed in four 70.3 races and am doing Arizona Ironman Nov 22. In previous races I have used Gu and other electrolyte drinks. I'd like to do this race raw and use the vega products. Is it enough? I need a plan.
Have you read Thrive or checked out Thrive in 30? Another good resource is Sarah Hauch. She is a raw food athlete and is doing her thesis on how this diet affects fitness. Have a look at her group and to connect with other raw athletes. Another person to connect with here is Kate Pallardy. She competes in ironman and also eats a primarily raw diet. Good luck!
With less then 3 weeks to go till your race be careful experimenting with something new. The nutrition you have practiced on your long rides and runs is what you should stick with for this race.
Going forward I HIGHLY recommend the new Vega Sport drink. It is simply fantastic. Lots of stuff in there to combat inflammation and provide sustained energy. A 250-ml (8-oz) serve has 70 cals so a bike bottle will contain 210 cals. Depending on your size and calorie burn rate one bottle an hour plus a gel or banana or half a Vibrancy bar should do it. This would give you about 300 cals per hour.
Be careful of trying to do the race "raw" using dates or coconut water. You can train your system to accept these fuels but it's a sure fire way to spend the race visiting the restrooms if you are not used to them.
I personally think its tough to carry your drinks on the run and would rather use the aid stations. I eat a plant based diet and train exclusively on Vega products. It's what you do for 364 days of the year that counts in the long term. On race day (for the run) if you have to drink a different sports drink or use a gel then it won't hurt you.
It should be enough if you look at total calories ingested. Typically you want 250/per hour - especially on the bike. A few bananas during aid stations will help. Drop me an email: tri3angela@yahoo.com if you're interested indeveloping a plan for this. :) Angela
