share. learn. thrive!

I am hoping someone can give me some answers. I recently was looking on a website that featured some healthy snacks. One of the snacks was kale chips. But as I began to read I was very dismayed to hear that kale is a goitrogen. I had no idea what on earth that was and I had to look it up. I have an under active thyroid and I take medication for it every day. But to hear that my favorite veg, kale, hinders the thyroid gland was a bit too much. PLUS...there's a whole list of other vegetables that are classified as goitrogenic and they are all the ones I eat. As a vegetarian this is pretty alarming. It's almost as bad as being told I have to eat meat! ugh!

Can anyone give me some clear advice and do I really have anything to worry about??? From what I did read, cooked kale and the others in that family are not as goitrogenic as raw. Of course, I eat all my kale raw in a salad with other veg like arugula, mizuna (when in season), dandelion, spinach, etc. I also eat a lot of broccoli which is under that same classification.

Thanks!

Make sure that you get enough iodine.

Thanks. I do have kelp flakes that I use in place of salt. I think that might help. I will use it more often now. I am not a big fan of seaweed or I would be eating sea vegetables. Unless someone has a way for me to get past the taste. The kelp flakes don't leave a seaweed taste on my food which is why I use it. I am welcome to all suggestions.

There's a new liquid kelp product made by Natural Factors that comes in a small bottle and eye dropper. Each drop provides 800 mcg of iodine which is a good daily dose. It's especially helpful for preventing iodine deficiency from eating too many raw veggies and not enough seafood which is naturally rich in iodine. Here is the product I'm talking about if you're interested:

Thank you for your help. I will bookmark that site. I did purchase kelp tablets but I think the liquid you mentioned is higher in iodine. Thanks again!

You're welcome. And yes, the liquid kelp is very potent and a lot more convenient than tablets IMHO. Each tiny drop packs a big punch so to speak. I would definitely use this product myself but I rarely eat any raw veggies besides a couple carrot sticks, red bell peppers and mini cucumbers a few times a week. I'm already getting enough iodine from Vega WFHO, wholefood energy bars plus an additional multivitamin that I take for extra vitamin/mineral support.

I drink Vega One every morning in coconut milk. I have been feeling better since I have. But I will get the liquid kelp for sure. Thanks.
