share. learn. thrive!

A friend of mine recently read and began to follow a book called The Beverly Hills Diet, which focuses on food combining. From the reading I've done on nutrition (both here, from Brendan's books, and other sources) and the importance of balanced meals on digestion, I pretty much immediately wrote off the idea that isolating carbs from meals and such as total fad crap to sell a few books to those desperate to lose weight just through eating.

However I've also seen discussions on Vega mentioning it now, and not claiming it to be nutritional blasphemy as I would've expected. Is there something to this concept? I hope not because it seems to contradict a huge part of what I understand nutritionally!

Help! Either with some scientific info, or articles/books to read! Thanks Vega people!

It's basically the scientific determination of what foods work well together in the gut. Good food combining = good digestion/no bloating/no gas/ good elimination, etc.
Go here for a very basic chart: http://www.alderbrooke.com/chart.htm or here http://www.thewolfeclinic.com/foodcombining.html
Some people find if they don't combine foods 'properly', they get bloated and gassy and uncomfortable - others can combine many types of foods without consequence.
I try to combine correctly at times, but as I have a fairly forgiving stomach, its not really a big problem for me.
Food combining is amazing and has helped my digestion so so much. I learned about it from a few books I have by Natalia Rose. Basically, when food is miscombined we have to use different enzymes to digest the different foods, which sometimes cancel eachother out or just make it more difficult to digest. It takes about three hours to digest nuts, and about three hours to digest starches but when you eat them together (or any of the other mis combinations) it makes your digestive system work twice as hard, meaning you dont get all the nutrients you need OR all the energy you need. By eating properly combined meals the food passes quickly through your system without making you tired after eating or bloated and gives you way more energy.

Also, poor food combinations can cause food to go undigested in the large intestine. I think its less of a worry if you eat whole foods, but if you think about all the food youve eaten your whole life (meat, dairy, processed foods, sugary drinks and candies) and how hard it is for your body to digest them than it becomes a big deal. All the food that goes undigested bakes into your intestines and becomes putrifactive matter and becomes toxic to your body and to your cells which is how disease, fatigue, overweight, and sooo many other issues develop.

I would read some of natalias blogs on her website www.detoxtheworld.com if your interested in anymore of this. Food combining is a great way to slowly detox your system (which most of us, vegan or not, need to do) without experiencing any harsh symptoms.

That being said, Ive also heard that Men generally can get away with improper food combining more than women because they have a much much stronger digestive system. I encourage you to try it out, just for a bit to see if you feel a difference. Ive been vegan for 6 years now and cant tell you how much of a difference I felt when I started food combining!
