Vega Community

share. learn. thrive!

I'm new to the Vega community and this is my first forum post.  So far I've only mixed the natural WFHO (about one scoop) into my morning oatmeal (+cinnamon, raisins, and almond milk) and the berry WFHO with ice and water.  I've also used the EFA oil blend on my salads.  Love it so far, but I'm looking to change it up.

This post started out as an inquiry about how palatable the chocolate WFHO is with almond milk.  If I shake it up and run out the door is it going to taste like chocolate milk or is it really only stomachable in a smoothie with bananas?  I'm making a trip to Wholefoods later today and was going to pick up the chocolate based on what I could find here on the forums.

Didn't really find anything except smoothie recipes.

The thing is, if I have time to make a smoothie and clean my blender, I would usually opt to prepare a wholesome meal.  I prefer to use WFHO when I have about 30 seconds to spare.  Also, I prefer something I can throw together at work where I don't have access to a blender.

Update:  After a lot of trial and error, I now consume a daily shake as follows:

1 banana

a few frozen peach slices

about a handful of frozen mango chunks

a few frozen raspberries

1 scoop berry WFHO

cold tap water to the fill line of my single serving shake blender (its not much)

This smoothie is perfection and easy to keep the ingredients on hand for.  I don't do the two scoops.  I really get what I need through my diet the rest of the day and I think if I had that much of the shake I'd get sick of it.  It's also economical because obviously my container lasts twice as long.

I have to say, since i figured this out and really started enjoying WFHO instead of trying to "stomach" it in moments, I feel INCREDIBLE.  I've got my diet down to a science and had it analyzed and I'm definitely thriving.  I start out my morning early with herbal tea and then I work out for an hour or so.  Then when I start to feel hungry I eat raw fruit in pieces until I feel satisfied.  I don't usually feel hungry again until 10am and this is when I have my vega shake.  If I'm leaving earlier than that, I anticipate this and take my shake to go.  I'm satisfied then until my big leafy green lunch, which is usually a late lunch and I'm never starving by now.  If I am for whatever reason, or I got too busy to eat at a reasonable lunch time, or I just feel like eating something delicious, I make a sandwich with avocado, sprouts, kale, and papaya poppyseed dressing on the healthiest bread I can find.  That keeps me going until late.  If I do just the salad at lunch time, I usually get hungry again around 4:00 and have some nuts or a vega whole food energy bar or pita chips with spicy hummus.  My staple dinner is vegan soup, but I change it up all the time because I cook for my family.

Obviously I vary the ingredients in my soups and salads and dinners.  I just wanted to share my science since it took me a while to pin down how to exactly incorporate a half serving of WFHO into a vegan diet while getting everything I need nutritionally, not sacrificing in the least!

This sounds like a great plan.

What kind of salads and dinner meals do you make?

Hi Kelly,

This brownie recipe was posted a while back using the chocolate optimizer: http://www.vegacommunity.com/profiles/blogs/in-the-vega-kitchen-cho...

For a quick snack you can also mix the WFHO with yogurt of Kefir or mix it a mashed banana or apple sauce. I guess you could combine the ingredients too if you are really hungry and add some granola.

Hi Kristin,

My lunch salads consist of a smorgasbord of whatever fresh veggies I have on hand, but my base staples are fresh kale, sprouts (i buy those spout mixes that come in the box), and avocado.  Sometimes I use just those three things on sprouted bread with a little Annie's papaya poppyseed dressing- AMAZING.  I do that when I'm low on other fresh veggies or I'm just more in the mood for a sandwich than a salad.  With the salad I throw on whatever I bought for the week, usually what was on sale or looked super fresh, plus some nuts, seeds, and cold pressed oil, and many times baby spinach and diced apple because that's just what i like.  The veggies I buy that I have on hand I serve raw to my kids while I'm preparing dinner.  When the veggies are on their last day, they go into vegan chunky vegetable soup, which I make in bulk and end up eating three days in a row per week leading up to grocery day when I replenish my groceries.  It's just so satisfying for me and the right thing at the end of the day.

At the beginning of the week I try to make universal meals that the whole family eats and they do their meat and cheese thing later in the week when I have my soup.  By universal, I mean things like pasta with broccoli and garlic and oil, stir fry, or grilling works out for individual preferences.  We even have a pizza routine down where I have my own small separate pizza stone, but we're all able to have homemade pizza together, mine is just cheeseless or made with daiya.  I also like Amy's canned vegan vegetable soups.

Hi Tania,

I saw this recipe posted on facebook right before I started renovating my kitchen, a process I thought would be long over by now!  I can't wait to try out that brownie recipe.  I think it's likely going to be the trick to getting almost my full two scoop serving of WFHO per day  :)

Hi Kelly,

Thank you so much for all of the ideas! It sounds like you have a great routine down. Good idea too on using the veggies on their last day for soups.

This has been very helpful.

Thanks again!
