share. learn. thrive!

Hey Everybody,

I'm a newbie to the Vegan world and I have a few questions for the "Vegan Vets" out there.  I've been working out for a while and I've seen some pretty awesome results when I was a meat eater.

Now that I'm vegan I kind of lost on what to do about protein intake.  So I guess I'm asking this, does it matter how much protein I consume?  Or is the guidelines on how much protein you should have is over-hyped.

Will I be able to maintain my muscle mass as long as I train properly and eat all natural foods?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi James!
Been vegetarian my whole life, vegan for years and an athlete since I could walk, so I'm happy to talk your head off on this :). I would say the whole protein thing is way over-hyped. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, grains, and fats and I really do promise you won't have a problem. In other words, eat plant-based whole foods in good variety (organic and seasonal if possible) and you'll be in great health!
Try not to fill up too too much on veggies (it is possible!) and make sure to get enough calories. This will ensure you're getting enough protein too.
Thanks alot. Training is nothing new to me, but the eating is a big change in my life. I appreciate your help.

James,

If your looking to maintain you don't need the benchmarked(?) 1g/lb body wieght that was always taught in bodybuilding school. If your an multisport athlete and very active then the calories you need will give you ample protein...Like Jvegegirl said make sure you're getting a variety of foods, specially the nuts and grains...I love sprouts and alfalfa sprouts have an amazing amino profile that would be conducive to maintaining muscle mass. Visit nutrtiondata.com and you can track the macronutrients of your foods..it also has some great graphs to examine the amino acid profiles of your foods and track the micronutrients. I suggest you also try the vega formulas: Whole Food Health Optimizer and the Vega Sport Performance Protein...bang for your buck they're stellar nutrition! There is always ways to add a few grams of protein to meals like Hemp protein powder (not sure if you can get in US) or brown rice powders...Really I'm finding enough to give me 200g/day easy without alot of powders added, just teaspoons in smoothies ...etc. I know 'THEY' always said whey and beef are best proteins , but I BELIEVE that cause plant proteins are shorter chains and often free form, you use them more efficiently therfore needing less overall.
