I can only assume that fresh maca in its puriest form would be the best kind, but since it is very difficult to come across i would like to know what everyones thoughts are as to what is next to best. I bought maca extract in a bottle (contains alcohol) today but it comes in the form of dry maca, tablets, etc. also if anyone knows which store does carry fresh maca please let me know.

Hi Joseph,

Like a potato, raw maca is actually very difficult to digest due to the crude fiber. In Peru, where maca is practically a household food, it is always cooked before eating. I've never seen raw maca available in Canada. There are several good maca products available in health food stores. Just make sure the maca is gelatinized, which is a process that uses heat and pressure to break down and remove most of the fiber, making it digestible. The published human clinical trials done on maca all used gelatinized maca.

Shameless plug: We make a brand of maca called MacaSure that is gelatinized. More info here: http://sequelnaturals.com/macasure/index.html

Here is a link to the research:

Thanks Charles you have really been a great help although I have already purchased the product macapro which is a 20:1 potent extract which btw has been nothing short of a stress relieving miracle I will absolutely get the macasure product next time.
