share. learn. thrive!

Hello Friends,

I'm about 2 maybe 2 1/2 weeks into taking Vega Sport Products, the Health Optimizer, Performance Optimizer (which I love) and the Performance Protein.  I am now starting to experience acne, the type that does not go away with acne wash and leaves blemishes on my skin.  My skin is usually very clear, I drink about 1 gallon to 2 gallons of water a day.  I am experiencing acne on my cheeks (big nasty ones that wont go away),my chin, forehead and neck area.  I usually have this issue when I take vitamins; I was a regular vitamin taker until about a year ago. I ran out of vitamins for about 2 weeks and after that short period of time I've never been able to take vitamin supplements without the reaction of the acne.

Is my body still detoxing?  I know Vega products have the recommended dosage of vitamins and fiber needed.  Should I stop taking the products or lower the dosage? Am I experiencing an allergic reaction?

Slowly but surely the detoxing period is going away, less gas, less bloating and less fatigue - so I know it's working and I feel great.

Any information will be appreciate!  I'm new to vegan products so the reaction my body is experiencing is a complete learning process.

Thanks again,

Desiree :)

I think it may still be the detox. When I was still eating animal products, I got a lot of acne. What helped was washing my face with Whole Foods brand body wash--yes body wash. It smells good, is really cheap, not tested on animals, and has great antibacterial properties. Continue eating the vegan foods you love, supplement with green juice, and try to find a simple body wash. If you can't find the Whole Foods one nearby, try a locally made castille soap.
Hi,

Thanks so much! There's a Whole Food store in the same plaza as my gym that I visit all the time. They have many products including Whole Foods body wash and castile soap...I will invest in one if not both and verify the results.

Thanks!
Hi Erin,

Sorry for the late reply....NO! the acne has not gone away! I notice it more when I take the Whole Health Optimizer. I dont take it as much everyday but I take the Performance Optimizer and the Protien Powder daily and the acne keeps on coming. I thought it was just my face breaking out but I have notice acne on my arms and back as well. When I drink the WHO I start to see acne the next morning, its usually small red bumps w/ white head that diminish with some warm water. I'm using vegetable glycirin as an acne base for my face because acne wash nor whole food body wash is working....Kinda distrubing because I dont want to stop taking the supplement as it is a vegan supplement, the milk products dont work well for me. Like everything else I have been doing some research and most of the research states that the body goes through a period of detox and drinking alot of water will help. It's been 30 days and I am still dealing with it so I am not sure of the research that I am doing is helpful! I drink over 2 gallons of water a day, I'm kinda self conscious w/ the acne in my face as I havent had to deal w/ this in a very long time!

This is interesting. I just found this entry on The Green Smoothie Challenge about break-outs being caused by eating too much fruit/berries: http://www.thegreensmoothiechallenge.com/recipes/2010/5/3/my-non-fr...

Maybe this is our problem!
Hi Again,

The article is great! I cant figure out exactly what is in the Vega products that are making me break out either. I know the WHO has the more profound effect on my skin w/ the pimples. I love the Performance Optimizer, so I might just continue to use that product and eliminate the WHO and the Protein Powder even though I must admit I like the outcome of all the powders because of the rigouts workout routine I have 6 days a week 2 times a day on Mondays and Wednesdays. I am not sore so they work but the acne is not going away and I dont suspect it will until I stop using the products.

Hi, it's Maria from the Green Smoothie Challenge and yes, I was so glad to figure out that eating too much fruit was the cause of my acne. It was driving me crazy and then I heard Kevin Giani talk about himself getting acne from fruit and Cherri Calbom said the same thing to me. So, I tried it and it only took 3 days to get rid of. I still get some acne here and there and have found an AWESOME, super clean, vegan product called Spotless by Sprunk-Jansen that clears it right up and does not dry it out at all. It's anti-bacterial and it breaks down and prevents oil build up on the skin. I love it and can't recommend it enough.
Hey Girls! I am VERY interested in this conversation! But, I'm a little confused...I read the article on the green smoothie challenge website that you shared, Erin.

Here's my question (maybe for you Maria): Is the idea to just consume veggie smoothies or veggie juices for 2 weeks? No other food? How many juices/smoothies per day if so?

Any guidance is greatly appreciated!
Thanks! Lisa
Hi Ladies,

Thnx so much for replying to this posting w/ your knowledge and updates. Maria, after researching, I've taken your advice and ordered Spotless by Sprunk-Jansen, awaiting delivery. Erin, thanks for sharing the information your naturopath gave and suggested. Several people have raved about the benefits of Chlorella. After researching it I think I may add it as a supplement into my diet and detox.

I've learned so much just from the few reply's to this post, this is such a great form! Please continue to add information and updates, I'm sure someone new to Vega will have the same question that we are giving answers to. I will update my skin progress in a few weeks!

Until next time, happy training and happy living! :)

Hi there,

I went to see my naturopath yesterday and asked her about the acne. She said I am definitely detoxing, and this process could take up to a couple of years depending on how much crap is in my system - yikes! However, she said the acne is a sign that my normal detox systems (liver, kidneys and lymph) are overwhelmed or not working optimally. That's causing my body to try to detox through the skin.

She said that some people feel this is just something you have to live with, but she didn't agree. She gave me some homeopathic preparations to help with those 3 detox systems, and suggested I add a chlorella supplement. I asked her about the ChlorEssence and she said it is probably safe (in terms of heavy metal contamination, etc.), but the one she recommended was Prime Chlorella, which she said is the best tested.

She said if that doesn't work, there's something else she can give me specifically tho help flush out the skin, but it's better to try the systemic approach first.

So for those of you who are struggling with this problem, it might be worth a visit to your natural health practitioner. I'll let you know how it goes! In the mean time, I have been using the Burt's Bees herbal blemish stick and it seems to be helping.

Erin
THat's great news. Please let us all know how it goes for you both!
Maria
Hi Everyone,

Its been a long time since I replied to this post. But I am happy to say that the acne is gone, taking the advice and using vegan based facial wash has been the best acne treatment I could ever think of (or what you guys thought of)! LOL. Also I love all of the VegaSport flavors I am buying now, I use them as much as I would like without any detoxing affects.

I have been doing a 7 week bootcamp challenge and I have 15 more days left, I posted a progress video from a year ago until now (Oct 30th) please check it out and tell me what you think. Its progressive success through ingesting VegaSport and inspiration from all you guys here on VegaSport communities, that helps me keep going!

Enjoy!

Hi Golden Natural,

So I decided to go vegan back in September and have been using several of Vega's products since then.  The WFO, Sport Protein, and Sport Optimizer.  I am experiencing similar acne breakouts...mostly on the forehead...that I never had before.  I love being vegan and love Vega's products as I am extremely active, but the acne is frustrating and embarrassing.

I just wanted some clarity on your experience.  So did you stop taking Vega products at any time?  I am thinking of starting to use that wash, Spotless by Sprunk, that you mentioned.  Did it help?  Did you make any other changes?  I have been feeling really bummed about my skin lately, but am encouraged that you were able to overcome it.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks!

I've been using the Vega WHO for about a month and am too experiencing large, painful breakouts on my chin, nose and forehead.  I too suspect it is the Vega product as nothing else has changed in my diet.  For those of you who have resolved this issue, please clarify if you stopped taking the WHO as part of the solution.  I love the product but hate my face!!!

I see this thread hasn't been commented on for a year now, but I just broke out with the strangest acne I've never had before. It's very small, bumpy, red and not in the usual places on my face where I get acne. The only thing I can think of that is causing this is the protein powder...which causes great dismay!

I'm going to continue using the powder every other day on a lower dose than the regular dose I was using. I am using the pre-workout powder in a shake in the morning. I am hoping that that will slow down the detox process and thereby let my skin balance itself easier. I was dealing with indigestion and all that fun stuff for the first few days, which was a week ago. The acne hit about 5 days in and is worse than ever today. It's impossible to cover up with make up.

I'm a bit perplexed by this because I thought it was whey protein that was likely to cause acne? I guess it could just be detoxing... and I really hope it goes away soon!

I'm also going to go for a facial tomorrow evening and see if they have any recommendations...
